This song was based, with some poetic license, on a Connecticut guy, Martin Turbidy. After Chapin's tragic death, Turbidy, himself, sang this song as a fundraiser for the Harry Chapin Foundation (a food charity).
In addition to being a masterful story teller, Harry Chapin was the real deal humanitarian. He donated the bulk of his earnings and huge blocks of his time into feeding hungry people. By all accounts the man was completely selfless and a shining example of a great human being.
Like others here, may I also recommend Harry's song "A Better Place To Be". Even after hearing this song many time over, it still affects me! And I feel so privilage to have been in the audiance for two of his live performances. Harry is another one of those artists that is best heard live. Oh, and "Shooting Star" was recommended. A great song but every now and then someone does a phenomenal version that is, dare I say, better that the original. ua-cam.com/video/_o-aeQeHnoY/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/mtfY_SWRnyU/v-deo.html At Harry Chapin Tribute Concert. Thx! Love u channel!
The man singing in the background was John Wallace. A seven octave range talent who sings the high parts in Harry's song Taxi. If he was still alive today, he'd still be banging out these stories. It just made him whole.
Okay Angela, that song always shook me up. Thank you for a wonderful, sincere reaction. For a bit of Harry's silly side, I'm positive you'd enjoy his "30,000 Pounds of Bananas". Live version please, his stage chatter is always warm, funny and endearing. Stay well 😇🥰🕊️🌹
Every time I watch this video, my emotions span the entire range. Yes, he is one of the great storytellers. He evokes sympathy for Mister Tanner, a pure soul enjoying his music. But the lesson I took from this story is that if you encourage someone to reach out for their goals, at least go with them. I wish his friends had. I've taken that lesson and applied it to my life. Thank you, Harry.
Harry was a master storyteller. He wrote amazing tales looking at real life. Songs like “A Better Place To Be”, “W.O.L.D.”, “Mail-order Anne”, and his masterpiece, “Taxi” shows us all the humanity around us as well as in ourselves. To this day fans that visit his grave leave coins there saying “Harry, Keep the change.” Once you listen to “Taxi” you will understand why. Please allow yourself the pleasure of learning his work.
Your passion makes you my favorite reactor. I have never heard this on the radio, but it is my favorite Harry Chapin song. It hurts my heart every time. BTW, the guy with the deep voice is also the guy with the high voice in Taxi. I forget if Harry called him wrapping paper or ribbon because he could sing above or below the song.
I agree with Rich R below - two more great storytelling songs from Harry are Better Place To Be (my personal favorite) and W.O.L.D.. The great message of Mr. Tanner is -despite the fact the critics tore him down, we have to remember not to confuse what makes us feel whole in life and our livelihood. I think too many people mistake who they are in spirit and soul with what they do for a profession. The latter will end one day, but the former lasts until death.
It grabs my heart to see you enjoy Harry as much as I do. His songs were to long for the radio in his day but he did not change his art. The best concert I ever saw was Harry in Tulsa when the whole band did not make the show. He walked out with a bar stool, sat down and sang and told stories for the next 2 hours. Totally amazing. If you want to hear some more try I Want To Learn A Love Song, or A Better Place To Be. So many amazing songs. Thank you for appreciating him.
Glad you went down this rabbit hole I saw harry live multiple times try Cory’s coming and all my life’s a circle live RIP Harry you are missed your story telling your charity. After every concert he would hang around and meet everyone
You are absolutely correct in your reaction! And also, the man singing the part of Mr. Tanner is of course, Big John Wallace, the best backup singer ever!!!
Harry Chapin was one of the best singer/songwriter "story teller" and most every song really delivered an interesting and captivating story in the lyrics. Thanks for reviewing it. I loved your review-you're such a sweet heart!
Many years ago, I had a show on an FM cable station at a small college. We were allowed to play pretty much anything in the station library (33rpm albums and 45rpm singles). Going through the albums, I was ecstatic to find Harry Chapin's "Heads & Tails," of which the brilliant song, "Taxi" was on. But the station and program manager scratched through the vinyl so no one could play that song. This was in the 70's and the last two lines were considered controversial. I recommend that you listen to this and perhaps the sequel song, surprisingly named "Sequel" which he wrote and released 8 years later and just before he passed. These are incredibly beautiful songs about two people and how their lives changed from when they set out to live their dreams.
Mr Tanner was a real person from Dayton. Harry was inspired after reading the review Harry sadly left us way too young in 1981 at age 45 He died in a car crash on his way to a charity concert for world hunger Harry was a BIG humanitarian who did a lot of charity work on behalf of World hunger Just a real good down to earth guy And yes, a master storyteller Try some others from Harry, for example Taxi (and the sequel, entitled Sequel) its a 2 parter. Both together tell a bittersweet story of love lost & found and meeting each other accidentally after many years A Better Place to Be WOLD Shooting Star All winners and interesting stories Don't think anyone ever reacted to Mr Tanner Good one, Ang!
Loved your reaction here Angela. "Mr Tanner" is a rare gem in Harry's catalog. It wasn't till I ventured into the realm of singing and performing live in front of audiences that this song hit me in my heart and soul. A few December's ago, I decided to make a Christmas music compilation CD as gifts and stocking stuffers. Mostly traditional carols, but then I got this idea to include "Mr. Tanner" as a Christmas song (O Holy Night, right?). That year my church choir performed O Holy Night for 2 evening services. The bass section was in fine order that evening, filling the cathedral... Mr. Tanner was my spirit that night...And as a bass baritone singer myself ❤
He has a lesser-known song named The Mayor of Candor Lied. I heard it for the first time during one of five live concerts of Harry I have seen. The whole crowd was blown away by the ending. It is a must listen if you like Harry's songwriting style. I have seen many concerts in the 70's from Queen to The Allman Brothers, but Harry's always left me speechless at the end. I always bought some cans of soup and shook his hand after the concert. My mom would ask, why are you bring soup to a concert. I told her Harry wants to help feed the world!
You must be mixing him up with someone else..yes Harry did die young but in a road traffic accident..he was driving to perform for a free benefit gig when he was hit by a big delivery truck..passers by pulled him out of his car which caught fire but he died in hospital from internal bleeding. His wife successfully took the supermarket whose truck hit him to court and won her case..
That song gets every time I hear it. Harry Chapin was one of my father’s favorite artist. Thank you for your sincere reaction. May I suggest Harry Chapin’s song “Sandy” he wrote it for his wife.
Many years ago, my church choir sang "Cantique de Noelle" for our Christmas Eve service (the song that "Fall in your kees, and hear the Angels calling.. congress from). Our choir director asked for volunteers to sing each of the verses and one of the volunteers was a gentleman in his 80s, who had been a very good musician in his day but who's voice was now wobbly and he had trouble staying in pitch. Never the less, our director let him sing. Many in the choir were upset he was going to sing and in our service he gave a very wobbly out of tune rendition. Afterwards, my teenage daughter was very upset to the point of tears that the man had embarrassed himself. But I told her that he had sing as a gift to the congregation and was proud of his effort. Like any gift, it was up to us to accept it with gratitude and to celebrate it. Then we went home and I played, "Mr Tanner," for her and we cried together. I wish you a happy Christmas and whatever holiday you celebrate.
Great request, great reaction. I've never heard this Harry Chapin song... as far as I can remember. I guess I never quite hit the threshold to buy a Harry Chapin record, but I don't know why that was, (because I did really like his songs I did hear) and I now wish I would have. Better late than never, perhaps... although, too late to put a few coins in Harry's pocket for a cup of coffee. Sigh... this is a great one. Thanks, so much.
Other reactors always react to “Cat’s In The Cradle” and maybe “Taxi”. Thank you for reacting to this beautiful example of Harry Chapin’s storytelling that’s not quite as well known. Beautiful moving reaction Angela.
Now you've got me crying. I first heard this song 40 or more years ago, and it always hits me hard. Give me a few days, Ms. Angela, and I'll become a Patreon member.
Wonderful song, and insightful reaction. GREAT one Angela. "Big" John Wallace who sang the baritone was part of Harry's band from the beginning until the end. He also sang the high notes in other songs. (PS listened to this twice, it's so good)
Thank you for being here. Your take on this speaks my language. I’m a feeler. I think you might be too. I appreciate your appreciation of music I’ve loved for decades. I get a kick out of people who try to intellectually rate this music. God bless them, but they so miss the point.
BTW I always liked versions like in Rockaplast (ua-cam.com/video/6mgk4TG_xS0/v-deo.html) better, where Harry and John drew out the last harmony a little quieter and slower at the start, which made the build-up to the final lines hit harder
Angela I am so happy that you reacted to this song, good for you. I grew up listening to the late great Harry Chapin, as he was one of my late father’s favourite singers. His storytelling is absolute genius. Please please please react to Sniper by Harry. I think it’s his greatest moment as a songwriter. It’s truly amazing.
After Harry's death, Martin Tubridy (the real life man who inspired the song) sang with Harry's band and Harry's brother in a tribute. That is an incredible video.
Angela, just watched quite a few videos on your channel. I love what you are doing! I was recommended to watch your Springsteen Tougher Than The Rest (I am a big Bruce fan and had just watched a clip of his from Howard Stern a few weeks ago playing this song). Then I went and watched more of your videos. It's fun listening and watching your reaction. This one was very heartfelt, and I was hearing it for the first time too. WOW. Thank you for putting out these videos! I will be watching you with each notification and going back to your archives too. I would love to see your reaction to Patti Scialfa As Long As I (Can Be With You). It's here on YT. The actual song starts at :56 seconds. She is Bruce Springsteen's wife who is a talented songwriter and in my opinion has a beautiful voice. You will see Bruce in the background of the video playing guitar. I fell in love with her music and voice when I first heard this song and went and got the CD. I'm so happy I found your channel!!! :) xoxo

Just to help, his name is pronounced "Chay-pin". You know his song "Cat's in the Cradle" - try "Flowers Are Red" about a teacher and her pupil and the "proper" way to color flowers. Also if you have not listened to Cat Stevens' song called "Father and Son", it is also very meaningful.
Mr Tanner is one of my favorite songs of all time. I listen to it for about 50 years and finally found out last year that it's a true story. And I heard the real Mr Tanner Singh However unfortunately the critics were right he was good but he wasn't good enough. Now listen to A better place...

Harry Chaplin “TAXI” is a must!!
His story of a radio DJ in W.O.L.D is another great. As for a song about music I have always loved Melanie's The Actress.
Big John is incredible!
Same throat that provides the falsetto part on Taxi, remarkable range!
Okay Angela, that song always shook me up. Thank you for a wonderful, sincere reaction. For a bit of Harry's silly side, I'm positive you'd enjoy his "30,000 Pounds of Bananas". Live version please, his stage chatter is always warm, funny and endearing. Stay well 😇🥰🕊️🌹
That's Harry Chapin and what a fine story teller.

Nice reaction. Harry chapin is always a good choice. You should listen to his first bid hit. " TAXI " a great song.
You should also listen to Taxi, and the follow-up Sequel.

Wonderful song, and insightful reaction. GREAT one Angela. "Big" John Wallace who sang the baritone was part of Harry's band from the beginning until the end. He also sang the high notes in other songs. (PS listened to this twice, it's so good)

I liked it very much good job Angela thx
He has more. Taxi is a great song and a true allegory.
Great reaction. Thank you.
A Better Place To Be would be a great one.
You will also enjoy A Better Place To Be
More Harry Chapin please. Any song will do😊
Great! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hi Angela, I just found this! Your reaction is so pure and profound and I loved it!!
A great storyteller with a life cut too short
This made me discover a new great song. Many thanks
He's got many lovely stories. Taxi. Taxi part 2. They call her easy. Dog Town.
Me and my girlfriend at the time saw Harry chavin that the Guthrie theater we left with nothing but tears in her eyes
I love that you chose a Harry Chapin song. The best American storyteller by song ever. Please do more! Listen to Shooting Star.
Storytelling is a lost art in music.

Interesting vocal combination in the chorus section

Harry wraps up the true meaning of this song when he says music was his life, not his livelihood.
You need to react to his songs Taxi and A Better Place to Be.
Fantastic
Mr Tanner is one of my favorite songs of all time. I listen to it for about 50 years and finally found out last year that it's a true story. And I heard the real Mr Tanner Singh However unfortunately the critics were right he was good but he wasn't good enough. Now listen to A better place...

love your reactions, you should listen to Traffic, walking in the wind.
You have to listen "A Better Place To Be" an amazing song that will leave you speechless.
The master
New to me! It does not move me unfortunately! My favorite by Harry is Cats In The Cradle, or is it Cats &The Cradle? Oh well, whatever the title is, I like that song!
Love your reaction Alexis which by the way is my granddaughters name
Angela, Angela, Angela.... You listen to Mr. Tanner, and you will need a box of Kleenex....
I don't know if you have reacted to "Cat's In The Cradle" yet. That is a good Chapin song.
Love to see you react to another Harry Chapin song, Sniper. It’s a bit different, so you need to mentally prepared.
❤
Big John Wallace singing the background baratone
His best work. his best personal song is " a story of a life" you'll need tissues for that one.
It always pissed me off that he didn't want to be famous he just enjoyed to sing. But his friends pushed him into doing it, so i don't blame the critics i blame the friends. React to " I wonder what would happen to this world" Harry Chapin
30000 lbs of bananas is a tragic but delightful song

Chapin is pronounced with a long A sound.
Try Taxi and 20,000 pounds of bananas. Critics do their jobs, which is to know what is sellable and what is not.
The people who usually say "you can't do this or that," are the drunks and ignoramuses who think you are a damn jukebox and all they have to do is shove a quarter in and you'll sing whatever they request off of the corporate radio classic rock playlist. I know requests are hard to come by but check out Roy Orbison song crying by KD Lang
chapin-long A
Try Flowers are Red.
A shame you didn’t listen to the version from his “Greatest Stories Live” album. A much better performance. Infinitely more powerful…
Taxi ..live
I think I would rather have just heard the cellist sing and play.
chA'-pin
Try to find Harry Chapin a better place to be
(((HUG))) ❤
'A Better Place to Be' by Harry Chapin is sublime.
