- Karen’s angelic vocal contributions notwithstanding, the sibling duo’s initial explosion onto the musical scene in 1970 was largely triggered by Richard’s masterful arrangement of this ‘forgotten’ Bacharach-David ballad (originally recorded by Richard Chamberlain in 1963: • 1st RECORDING OF: Clos... and also later parodied Spike-Jones-style by The Clams: • a la Spike Jones - The... ).
Pop Chart Peaks: #1 on Billboard, Cash Box & Record World - Easy Listening Peak: 1 - UK Peak: 6
Released on stereo 45rpm single A&M 1183 - (They Long To Be) Close To You (Hal David-Burt Bacharach) by The Carpenters, arranged by Richard Carpenter, produced by Jack Daugherty
THE 1970 HITS ARCHIVE - Here in one place, a comprehensive collection of ‘pop’ best-sellers and songs which made an impact that were either released or enjoyed a major chunk of their popularity within the calendar year 1970 (some were recorded in 1969)
There is only 1 voice that no one male or female has bested or even equaled in the past 90 years of recordings.
This is that voice.
Richard Carpenter - underrated arranger.
One of those increasingly rare, almost-perfect Pop music productions. Beautiful. A little treasure. ;o)
A&M Records first STEREO 45 single!!
Heavenly.
Great memories of going to Walter's beach on Elizabeth Lake In Waterford, Michigan back in the summer of 1970 and hearing this hit play. The smell of the lake, suntan lotion, hot dogs and occasional cigarette smoke filled the air. Karen's voice was pure magic. The Carpenter's were totally underrated. Their music has withstood the test of time.

UK Chart Peaks: 3 (NME), 4 (MM, MN), 6 (BMRB)
Of all the Carpenters' #1's, this was the only one to have reached the top of all charts. As well, despite A&M being run by Herb Alpert, the trumpet solo on the instrumental break was by Chuck Findley.
i've always wondered who played the trumpet and i thought that was Herb Alpert, before now.
Takes me back to 1970! Turned 15 that summer. Great music on the radio. I loved this tune when it was new. Great. Thanks.
HI Jim 👋🏻
I Suspect when it was 'On The Radio',
was when it was 'New' .
I ask this for no more of a reason than curiosity - Have You Always felt the Need to announce Your age ?
Just wondering 😉.
Have a Great weekend,

That was LAME
Yeah, I live in the past too much. Yes, brand new. One friend had the record. I liked those carefree days living at home, etc. The music takes me back.
By the way. What was lame?
@@xxvvkx9312
What part ?
What IS Lame, is
2016 was "The Worst Year Ever".
Our Brand New "Worst Year Ever" ?
Obviously 2020 which is Rapidly becoming Runner Up To -
2021.
How Bad Does It Have To Get ?!
🇺🇸 ✌🏻
Sounds like a little slice of heaven
This is what happens when big record companies actualy pay attention to their small label surroundings - Karen Carpenter's Magic Lamp 45 from 1966 is worth enourmous sums of money nowadays!
They had some great hits for the first 5 years. This is pretty but I love their follow-up the most (We've Only Just Begun), which was also featured on the same album (Close To You). I think .. Just Begun was based on a song that was used in a commercial for Bank of America.
Slight correction my friend. That song was written for a TV commercial for Crocker National Bank in California, in 1970. Not B of A. Crocker National Bank merged with Wells Fargo in 1986.
@@jimhilliker2450 cool and thank you. I hope you're doing well.
To those who ask: That very type variant you see on this clip, with only one publisher, and label type from the CBS Pitman, NJ plant, is the copy I have of this breakthrough hit for this duo.

(They Long To Be) Close To You [Lyrics]
The Carpenters
Why do birds suddenly apear
Every time you are near?
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you
Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born
And the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust
In your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue
That is why
All the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you
On the day that you were born
And the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust
In your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue
That is why
All the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you
Just like me
They long to be
Close to you
Composers: Hal David, Burt F Bacharach
Burt Bacharach is also his own genre.

What is Your opinion of 'His' Voice ?!
@@janeleekeller Hmmm. He's about a step or two up from Herb Alpert.
Lol
@@bryanrendleman2001
And yet,... Alpert's vocal on "This Guy's in Love with You" was nothing short of * brilliant * (In my opinion.).
@@Richard-ig4ou I knew my humor was flying to high and fast for some on that comment.
That's why I included the lol.

That Bad Huh 😉.
Even Worse - Leonard Cohen !
