The problem with schizophrenia is that the person doesn't believe they are sick. They're delusions and hallucinations are so real to them, that it's like trying to convince everyone that the sky is not blue.
Refusing meds is totally normal. As a consequence, psych nurses like myself have a constant battle with said clients. It leads to alot of violence and aggression on wards where patients are locked up and can't understand that their delusions are all in the head and they need meds.
It's a genuine problem within the psych services.
Some have killed and upon taken medication and becoming well, have been devastated that they killed they're family to save the family from torture by the Mafia. Or they thought their beloved grandma was a demon.
Vince slipped through the net like many. But this went on far too long in this case.
However, I agree with danielle...he should be held accountable in court.
But this sounds like a genuine case of insanity unlike many who pretend they are insane to get off charges.
Vince should never have been discharged from the system though. That is negligence from the system.
It d be interesting to know if when he got "well" , how he felt about his crime.

What a beautiful person Tim was, I'm glad he experienced a beautiful life while he was here. I'm absolutely mortified that they didn't break a window and tear gas the bus - it actually seems like they should be held accountable as accessories to the desecration of a corpse. A simple tear gas bomb. And WHY didn't they move the people away?!?!?!?! They HAD to know people aren't trained to handle seeing this stuff like they are. They should be held liable for the traumas these people endure; for not moving the crowd to the other side of the building or something. They were left in harms way as well. He broke a window and jumped out, what if he did that sooner? The death toll could've been MUCH higher. It's an absolute disgrace. We once had to discharge a woman who clearly wasn't ready.... she ended up squatting in an abandoned house a block away for months. She survived only off apples that fell from a tree in the yard. When winter hit, the apples stopped falling. She starved to death and kept a journal the entire time. I think there is a documentary about it somewhere.

So I'm not sure what they could have done with just the diagnosis...up until that point he hadn't physically hurt anyone. He seemed to be alone, too, divorced and had no friends or anyone close around him. • @stephaniezini
      @stephaniezini Рік тому +9

@jonathanjrgensen6774 I definitely don't want the cops to get hurt. However in an attempt to speak for everyone who is upset with the cops, I think there's a few points to be made in that there was more than one cop, so that's several against one. They are trained to do this, take down an armed individual and he had a knife not a gun. They have devices to break open a door and they could have shot him with a tase gun immediately which are incredibly strong he would've fallen to the ground, then they could apprehend him further. That all could've taken seconds, while he was distracted. The thing is it doesn't matter that the guy was already dead, he's in there committing a crime, a vile one and the cops are present, cops are trained to stop people committing crimes and they could've done that, in this case the crime being committed further hurt the guys family so that is why everyone us speaking out against the cops. Point being they were trained to handle a dangerous guy and stop him further committing the crime he was doing and they didn't. It doesn't matter if the crime is just rummaging through someone's house, why do you think if the cops show up to a place being robbed and no one is in danger, they stop the guy, why? Well that's simple to stop him committing a crime. It's not typical for cops to stand around and say "oh well our lives are in dabger", their lives are in danger everyday they are trained to handle it in every situation even this one. So saying people just want the cops to get hurt is ignorant and said without thinking about hat the cops are trained to do and what they should have done, sorry I'm just presenting facts.

@@stephaniezini if cops show up at a house where a guy is robbing it, they surround the place and make him come out with his hands up, they don't just rush him?? - what would be the point in risking officers to go tackle the guy?? And no matter how trained they are for these situations, like the one in this case, it's still a risk to go confront a man with a knife, no matter the precautions you take. He can throw it, maybe he's in a state of mind that wouldn't care about the pain of the tasers, lots of things can happen. Even if there's a 1% chance of a cop getting hurt, it's not right to take that risk. And I'm sure it's not nice for the family to know their kids corpse got fucked up so bad, but its not as bad as what had already happened, their kid dying. Why risk another death? It sounds like you're saying cause officers risk their lives sometimes that they should keep doing it in every case, and not value their lives over a crime. I understand that they have to risk their lives for others lives, but not for something not life threatening, like in this case.

I unfortunately have a really vivid imagination for good or bad so when Danielle is telling this story, my a*shole brain is throwing me these horrible, horrible violent mental pictures as this nightmare of a story goes on getting worse by the minute. My God, poor Tim!! I also cannot even begin to understand the mental anguish and horror those passengers went through.
I actually do have PTSD from something that happened years back. It was pretty severe and my brain actually to this day blocks out some of the attack as a form of keeping me safe because it was too much to handle in that moment. I think the counselor called it disassociation. I can recall most of what happened with a few blanks that I know now corresponded with the worst of it. I would bet my next paycheck that some of these passengers may be going down this same road and if so, I am just so sorry for them.
The knife part + the unfettered sudden violence on an innocent person he had cornered has triggered me a bit right now and I don't think I've ever said that about a YT video, much less even claimed to be 'triggered'. Yeah, I'm not doing so good right now.
Most importantly, RIP Tim. The poor guy didn't deserve this. He seems like he would have been a fun and interesting person to hang out with.

That’s not how schizophrenia works!! You can’t be held accountable to “just take your meds” lmao. They’re not in their right mind!!! Even when they do take their meds they still hallucinate sometimes and their hallucinations are just as real as anything else in the world to them. Just as real as the doctor telling them to take their meds. Their hallucinations are just as real and telling them not to. They do not understand reality! Their brains are fucking broken.
I’m so sick of all the comments on here like this. My mom was schizophrenic and the only reason she took her meds is because we were there every day to make sure she did. & even then she still had hallucinations & every few years her meds would completely stop working & we’d have to get her back into the psych ward to recalibrate her dosages or switch to new meds altogether. Without a STRONG and VIGILANT support system no schizophrenic person will ever stay on their meds. Their delusions always tell them not to take them, that they’re not crazy and that what they hear and see is real. Y’all clearly have zero personal experience with schizophrenics.

i don’t think he should’ve ever been released but don’t agree with being accountable the same way a sane person is. one of the symptoms of schizophrenia is paranoia and a lack of insight. as someone who has family and friends family members with this condition, it’s almost impossible if not possible to convince a schizophrenic that they’re schizophrenic. secondly, they almost always think their medications are some sort of poison, and you have to put it in teas, candies, etc to give it to them. the fact that he was left unsupervised by family or medical professionals (who to be fair can only do so much, i’ve had to call on psychotic episodes and most of the time you can’t get someone admitted legally if they refuse and at that present time present no danger), is the biggest issue here. there has to be a way to get people admitted before they become a present risk. but again someone with schizophrenia is never going to willingly admit themselves, take their medications, they believe in why they’re hearing is real and that they’re not sick , they don’t have insight.

Everything about his reality, how he was experiencing himself and the world around him, was giving him false information. The dude needed serious care to get back out of the reality break by that point. It probably wouldn’t have even taken that long.

I don't remember where or when, but I have heard this case before. Schizophrenia, is a disorder that affects a person's ability to think, feel, and behave clearly. It also involves delusions (false beliefs), hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that don't exist), unusual physical behavior, and disorganized thinking and speech. It is common for people with schizophrenia to have paranoid thoughts or hear voices. When someone has this disorder, they must be supervised bc many of them don't want to take their meds, or think they don't need them. If any Dr diagnoses someone and puts them on medication, I believe they have an obligation to maintain a Dr/patient relationship to insure that the meds are taken.

This case has always infuriated me. When it happened, the entire country was horrified and outraged, and it just amplified when he was released. To think that a man as depraved as this has been allowed to be set free is disgusting. He refused to take his medication once and his irresponsible actions resulted in the end of a beautiful soul; who's to say he won't stop taking it again? I absolutely agree that he should've received the psychiatric help he needed. However, at the end of the day, he still committed one of the most grotesque murders I have ever heard of. He should be in prison for life, and the fact that he is now free to walk around terrifies me

That’s not how schizophrenia works at all.
It’s not that he was depraved and refused them. It’s that he was incredibly ill and truly, 100% believed he was not schizophrenic and didn’t need them.
That’s what schizophrenia does. It makes you distrustful and delusional in your thought. It doesn’t matter if 1000 doctors say you’re schizophrenic. If you say you’re not, you’re not. That’s the mindset.
He shouldn’t have been locked up in a prison. He shouldn’t have been released either. He should’ve been helped psychologically.
I do wish people attempted to understand schizophrenia.

My mother has schizophrenia and all the symptoms you described is definitely what she experiences. If Vince had gotten an ounce of that help, if anyone in authority had stepped up, none of this would have happened. People with severe mental health are rarely treated to the standards they need. It's a huge problem in our society that I really wish was better.

Try working or dealing with someone who suffers from the illness before you comment. In Vince's case he was far from selfish, he was trying to save a bus load of people from a demon.

Danielle, please consider this case from Northern British Columbia - Cody Legebokoff is one of Canada's youngest serial killers.
He lived a double-life, everyone thought he was this normal, charming guy from a good family, but secretly he'd murdered several local sex workers and was only caught and apprehended after murdering one of my, at the time, 9th grade classmates, down a backroad only a few KM from my house. It shook every community in the area. It would be a great opportunity to tie in talking about the Highway of Tears.
The HoT is something that grips Northern BC, a connection spanning 50+ years of mostly unsolved murders and disappearances, majority of which were indigenous women. It's impossible to drive through the area without seeing Madison Scott's Missing billboards. I have personal connections to several of the women on the HoT list and it's frustrating/baffling to me how little the HoT is talked about in true crime.

my dad wears sunglasses even at night because he has light triggered migraines
people have accused him of all sorts of stuff, especially being on drugs
but no, he just doesn't want to get a serious migraine at the grocery store or when he sees a cop car flashing in his face, which makes him have to pull over AND SLEEP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD until he's able to drive home or to a hotel or something - it's a serious safety hazard if he can't wear them when he wants to
blind people often wear them too
i've worn sunglasses inside in stores and stuff because sometimes i get an allergic reaction that makes my eyes all red and puffy (i'm allergic to basically everything outdoors)
other stuff is suspicious in this case obviously but sunglasses help people exist in the world, as an accessibility aid like regular glasses for people with bad vision
please don't continue to spread this stigma of "people wearing sunglasses inside/when they're not "needed (read-i specifically wouldn't wear sunglasses in this way, so nobody needs to because my experiences are universal)" are weird and suspicious"
most of the time they're just people trying to go about their daily life 😩
same as like, autistic and Deaf people wearing headphones out in public
autistic people because sensory overload with lots of sounds, Deaf people often so people don't assume they can hear them and get angry for the Deaf person ignoring them (yeah that's because they didn't hear you... easier for hearing people to get it if someone is wearing headphones 🙄)

I'm sure this is obvious to most everyone; but the likelihood of someone with schizophrenia committing a violent crime is very low. We only hear about the violent people who either refused/were unable to get treatment. There is a stigma about people with hallucinations being unpredictable and violent and this is just not true.
Thanks again Danielle for another amazing video!

@Lorraine Armstrong My point was in no way discrediting the suffering of people who were affected by this crime or any other. My point is that people with schizophrenia are often stereotyped as violent murderers and portrayed that way in the press which leads to unfair treatment of them in society. My point was attempting to remind people not to take the actions of one violent man and apply it to an entire population.

@@lorrainearmstrong7587 Thank you!! My exe's son was a paranoid schizophrenic who, after I left, I read had violently rap*d a woman, after trying to break into another apartment. Excuse me that I don't want to hear the whole white-knight need to virtue signal. Many actually DO commit crimes and lacking a filter, can be incredibly aggressive and dangerous. There's a reason there is a stigma. Sure some of it is unfair, but is also based in a little truth.

How did the universe arrange itself for this to happen with such precision and affect so many lives. It’s just. It baffled me and Christy your research and story telling made justice for Tim. That's a bit harsh..bed wetting on its own can mean nothing,it's if it is combined with, apparently, killing animals as a youngster & theirs another element I can't think of but yh,all 3 of these combined can be indicative of said point but on its own bedwetting can be harmless!..don't spread misinformation as you could be pointing the finger at alot of innocent parents there!..Not cool..

@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria there’s been countless evidence proving bed wetting issue’s persisting beyond being a Toddler being an effect of trauma / child abuse. Jon benet for example. Had it been caught earlier * the obvious abuse she might still be alive. Instead family ignored the signs. Them getting punished for wetting the bed it makes it worse . Which happens. To think otherwise is ignorant. Doesn’t mean every grown child peeing the bed means abuse but it could be means to pay closer attention for other suss signs of abuse. Most killers didn’t have happy normal childhoods. They were usually abused / neglected. Again because apparently I need to explain logic, doesn’t mean every abused child will go onto kill. Ie myself. But people deal with trauma differently. Some cope better than others. Doesn’t excuse them of consequences for their actions. But a person being abused during the years they are developing into the person they will become can have huge effects on the rest of their life aka mine.

I also know it’s a thing social workers look for . Would they take a child away just for that one thing? No but they may look into it further because that’s there job. There’s cases of social workers not acting on these signs and it ending n abused children dying so eff off with that nonsense mmkay 👌🏻✨💫

I've had a friend who has schizophrenia, and he did end up having a very bad psychotic episode in a different country and was sort of lost for either months or years, I'm not sure, I just remember that it took his family a long time to find him again. He didn't murder anybody, sure, but he had lost control and done all kinds of stuff that would seem weird or unsettling to the rest of us. After treatment and with medication, he's been able to live a mostly normal life, but he still sometimes suffers from psychotic episodes, especially when he sometimes decides to not take his meds for one reason or another (tbh that seems like a pattern with all the people I know that have schizophrenia) and he ends up destroying property or just has a mental breakdown or something.
Treatment and medication are important, and I hope that during the stay in the psychiatric hospital he learned to understand his condition more and became more responsible with taking his meds and all that. Yes, what he did was wrong, but he wasn't of sane mind at all when he committed the absolutely horrible act. Tbh I'd point the finger at the people who originally diagnosed him and just let him go about his life without making sure that he learns what's going on and why he needs to take the meds and so on.
Blaming people with mental health issues just makes it harder for them to go get help, because there's a lot of stigma if you hear voices or see things that aren't there. I've known a lot of people like that over the years, and it's so sad when they don't get treated properly.
And yes, it is scary that there's some very violent people out there, but tbh I'd be more scared of the people that have control over their actions and they want to hurt people because they enjoy causing suffering and all that shit.
Pretty good video otherwise though, I've seen videos of this case before, and I don't remember hearing about the man's childhood before.

@@abebuckingham8198 It could have. He was diagnosed to have this illness way before and even found him roaming in the highway with clear signs. In my country by law someone like this is inmediately put into a hospital to be treated. I worked in a mental hospital and I have put medication on patients that refuse to take pills "cause they arent sick".. and improve. This clearly would have gotten him better mentaly and stay more stable and understanding to take medication. He would also be force to have legally meetings with a psychiatrist to evaluate his progress with power to put him back in an institution if needed or have him have a warrant if he fails to show to the appointment.

@@Alejojojo6 It can be difficult to tell the difference between schizophrenia and religiosity at times. In my experience people with religious delusions are skeptical of anything that would stop them from hallucinating because it's an accepted part of the religion. Having visions and hearing the voice of God are major themes in the Bible. The Book of Revelations reads like the ramblings of a schizophrenic too so you can see that the mentally ill were key members of the church in the past. It's only recently in human history that we've begun to see it as an illness and not a gift.
