      Indeed, I hope they see this. I can totally relate to the introverted autistic of the last question. My suggestion is to do some research and see what group or organization you would like to participate with. I will recommend keeping it fairly small and local to begin with if you can. Then contact an individual from that group by email, private message on a social service they use, or phone. Whichever you are more comfortable with. Explain to them your skills AND circumstances. I would wager they will be understanding as there are more of us involved than you might realize.

      It helps to write and practice speaking a script that explains your skills and your challenges. Reducing the number of things you need to communicate "on the fly" makes communication a little less stressful.
      Accounting skills are very valuable. Most tiny organizations know nothing about money and need help with tracking donations, doing standard financial reports, filing paperwork for tax exempt status, and filing annual tax returns.
      A web search for "volunteer opportunities" in my location found a long list of organizations. Some have websites that list what they are looking for.

      Another thing that helps introverts is finding one outgoing, well-connected person to make some contact with. In my area, these people are often involved and vocal in locally-based Facebook groups, where you can watch and read for a while, and keep an eye out for them letting it be known that help is needed in some organization.
      Extroverts are better at having lots of connections, so as an introvert, being strategic about seeking out an extrovert who's active in the type of activism you want to do can get you connected without needing to do lots of people-ing.

On Irish national radio the bells still ring out at midday and 6pm as a handy reminder for taking a pause from whatever I'm doing and thinking about what I treasure enough to hope for the support of any devine entity, or all. That includes some of the dogs I helped re-home as well as certain people who I think do their best to keep this planet in more decency than horror. The Democratic side of the aisle really does suck at messaging. I see this as a problem.
      So many people don't care to know whats actually going on. They tend to only catch what is sensational and easy, like Facebook or X. The momentary 'Neon lights and Silicon Jiggly parts' and that's about it.
      Beyond that, whatever "herd" they are around the most, is what feeds their perceptions of things. He was a heavy equipment mechanic, with a company that laid in infrastructure for housing developments. Now, he works for our state department of corrections.
      I'm seeing this 'herd influence' with my own son and his wife. My son used to be much more informed, once upon a time. Being around the "herd" of coworkers, he had to be around over the past decade and the type of work he did, I suppose was a kind of cultural and indirect psyops.
      In my opinion, he was too tired to really question and dig deeper. I think that's the case for many, especially in the blue collar world.
      The economy is their biggest concern. The democrats need to do better at messaging.

    • @vikingdragon2764

      If they depend on sources like Fox, OANN or Newsmax, or don't have time for the news because they work all the time ( been there, done that) and are only around people who watch said sources, they are much less informed than you think unfortunately. Remember there were many people who acted like January 6th was a "normal tourist day", when most of us have seen what happened and followed the January 6th Committee. Also: if you hear all that's not allowed to be taught in schools(Trump bragged about getting the vote of the uneducated) Facebook, which is were many get their news, put people in information silos with their algorithms. Cognitive dissonance is another problem.

    To the helper who asked: honestly, most non-profits, especially the smaller ones, would cry for joy if an accountant reached out to them. A single email to (place you're interested in) might be all the networking you need! Plus, they're professional networkers- let the experts do the hard work! If the first place doesn't need an accountant, they probably know someone who does, and will gladly point you in the right direction for minimal networking needed.
    In the House: well, that didn't take long
    and yeah, I can only imagine Poland's going to really push aid to Ukraine, given its willingness to go in. if only we (USA) would follow suit...

    HA! I have known a few electrical engineers, all amazing in their field, some of whom probably shouldn't be trusted to care for a goldfish. Just because someone is extremely intelligent in a complicated field, doesn't mean they are emotionally intelligent enough to not be scammed.

    • @TheSuzberry
      @TheSuzberry 4 дні тому +7

      And having an advanced degree does not make them generally intelligent, it means they are very, very knowledgeable about one aspect of one subject.

    • @Jedi_Vigilante
      @Jedi_Vigilante 4 дні тому +2

      In my experience, those with a specialized degree are often MORE susceptible to scams and such. Especially the ones who have convinced themselves that they are super smart and capable due to their degree/specialization.
      It really comes to down to methodology. Do they implement the same methodology in their specialization as they do in the rest of their life, or is that compartmentalized? You see the same thing with scientists who are incredibly skilled in some complicated field, and yet have unquestioning belief in a god. They do not apply the same systems of evidence, logic, study, etc. to their religious beliefs (and often other aspects of life) that they do to their work. That gap allows them to be exploited.

    • @RevShifty
      @RevShifty 4 дні тому +1

      @@Jedi_Vigilante They tend to have a whole lot of almost comical optimism about their ability to "reason" and "think things through" because of their intelligence in one very narrow, usually very specific avenue. This, almost counterintuitively, sometimes makes them even quicker to fall for absolute nonsense and conspiracy fantasies, and makes them much harder for most people to budge free of the nonsense.
      This isn't new. Not by a long shot. The same thing has held true for decades, at least as long as I've been alive, and seems to effect most every STEM field. Though it definitely seems to plague engineers the most, for some reason.

    • @Jedi_Vigilante
      @Jedi_Vigilante 4 дні тому

      @@RevShifty The reason I say it has to do with methodology is because the source of that optimism and confidence seems to be a huge factor.
      For example, those who think they are the most safe are often the least safe. The reason though, is because they ASSUMED that they were safe due to some other factor in their life (like intelligence in a specialized field). That assumption is often what makes them so unsafe, because they do not actively take measures to protect themselves (like seeking verified, correct information about current events/common scams).
      Meanwhile, if a person's methodology includes studious research of topics unfamiliar to them, they may actually be safe because they don't assume safety. This means that the reason they could be such a good engineer (their studious nature) also protects them from being exploited. But only if they continue to extend that methodology outside of their specialization.
      I think that is where that counterintuitive vulnerability comes from. Do they assume safety due to their specialized skills, or actively seek to preserve safety by utilizing the tools that allowed them to excel in their specialized field? It is the reason why some highly technical theoretical physicists can run out of gas multiple times a week, while others can accurately question complex theories in areas far afield of their own particular specialty. Are they implementing the same methodologies that made them great, or simply believing that they themselves are great and are therefor "safe"?

    • @RevShifty
      @RevShifty 4 дні тому

      @@Jedi_Vigilante We basically just said the same thing using different language. I don't presume to know if it's a feeling of safety or just over confidence (ie, from "being the smartest person in my family"), but otherwise we basically just described the same root.

    There needs to be a online resource specifically designed to help build community networks, like a virtual meet up or sign up where people can post their skills and contact information. That way if you have someone that is good with people and organizations need someone with skills but bad at people interaction they can still contact them. Most introverts have problems talking to people they don't know so the roughest part is the introduction and the first few weeks after that it smooths out. Having an online resource that helps facilitate introduction and organization would probably help people a lot.

    It may not be with accounting or graphic design right away, but it's a foot in the door. Often they already have a program so you dont need to network from scratch. The work is a lot of invasive species management (multiflora rose, honeysuckle, tamarisk, invasive crayfish and zebra mussels) or counting and labeling artifacts, or digitizing records which are usually not overwhelmingly social situations.

Why is it the man can’t say anything with out trashing some one or something. Not a holiday has past has his statement of such been normal or acceptable. It’s always combined with self promotion/ boasting while attacking or belittling one or more people or whole group or all of the above. Why can’t this man ( term used loosely ) just say Merry Christmas Happy New year. He can’t say ,The half staff flag represents our great country’s respect for those that came before us in their passing then leave it alone or not mention it at all. This is obviously his daily way of communicating. Obnoxious at best.

    Re the talk with the engineer.
    Engineers don’t like not knowing .
    What I do and I suggest is
    1) find two or three factoids per issue. Use the AP or Politico because they are not commercially owned.
    2) use the phrase “as you probably know…..” then share the factoid.
    3) when they dismiss the source or fact, simply ask, “ who do you prefer to listen to, someone with a commercial interest in the data who provides facts with an opinion, or someone whose business plan is to provide facts and not opinion.
    Good luck.

    For the last poster talking about volunteering, it sometimes helps to have someone more outgoing (a friend/partner/family member/etc.) to help you make that initial step. "Hey, (Charity). I know an accountant who isn't a people person but is good with numbers. Do you or the organizations in your network need either graphic design or accounting volunteers?" Then the second step of arranging time/date/location/etc. for volunteering those services is easier for you to do solo.

    The 2% defense spending is not an "agreed amount" it is a goal set that each country should try to exceed. But funny thing is most countries do exceed 2% if they were to use US math. The US counts veterans benefits and pensions as "Defense spending" while most EU countries payout that through social security, making it an accounting difference.

    With respect to the accountant who wants to volunteer. Find a small organization that you want to support and email them to offer your services. Look on their website to see if they have a volunteer coordinator or other staff with published email addresses and include whoever seems appropriate. Also cc the general contact address. Follow up once or twice if you don't hear back and then move on to another organization and repeat. You are bound to find someone who will want your assistance. Stick with smaller groups as they are more likley to struggle with budgetting accounting or graphic design services. Good luck.

    (10:46/)11:27 - big relate! 😢 I'm also autistic, and networking is _hard_ for me... though... I don't necessarily mind reaching out to folks (at least sometimes), I just... don't seem to be effective at it. 🥺 So.....
    11:24/11:38 - my suggestion, which I've _sometimes_ had some success with in the past (though I haven't been having much lately, despite _repeated_ efforts, sigh) is this: find _one_ person (ideally someone more extroverted, and perhaps more neurotypical) to network with, who can then spread the word for you, and/or find you opportunities that need your skills. If you've got an ally that can compliment your skills -- by being the talker that lets you know where your services are needed, and others know where they can get those services -- that can really help. Of course, getting that one ally is still hard, sometimes, and for that... All I can suggest is to just keep trying, one way or another. 😕

    Hey Accounting guy! So when it's necessary to network there are two types and they are both talked about in this channel. There is reaching out to established groups via their channels of communication such as what Bell referred to. Which with your anxiety probably would be smoother.
    But if you're trying to be part of some local neighborhood or even city council will lead to finding people in your local area. Make sure to specify what you offer and what you would like to support in local groups. That way those who would like to assist in that will easily find you. As that skill is not ubiquitous in groups.

But if you decide to try it anyway, one thing I've learned from this channel is that it helps to lay out a timeline. Conspiracy theories tend to melt away in the face of a closely examined timeline. Engineering types might be able to understand that approach.

It's not even that I find interacting with people in social situations to be that bad, I just don't know how to find those social situations in the first place. How does one find a network?
