If anything, Nick, this video wasn’t long enough. You’re a great story-teller and you’ve owned some wonderful cars. Thanks for sharing the backstory with us.
Nick, you are a great storyteller. Especially liked the one about when you rode your motorcycle with the Brothers and were stopped by the police. Being a Black man myself I found it funny yet really sad at the same time.
Fantastic video Nick. You’re a great storyteller. My first car was a 1969 VW Beetle. British racing green. I ordered it “loaded” my last year in the USAF. It had a manual sun roof, wooden steering wheel, wooden gear shift knob, white leatherette upholstery, a Blaupunkt AM, FM, SW radio and a cover behind the rear shelf. I installed two speakers back there. I owned that car for almost nine years. Almost 200,000 miles and three or four valve jobs later I sold it for a left over 1977 Saab 99. That VW is the only car I truly loved. 10++ affection rating. The Saab was the worst car I ever owned. It never ran right and after four years the car was riddled with body cancer, a cracked block and a broken manual transmission. An affection rating of -2. I paid to have the car towed to a junk yard. I got sensible after that experience and owned two Honda Accords. The first was a 1982 Accord hatchback. Great car but after eight years when a hole appeared in the drivers side floor I knew it was time to trade it in. Next was a 1990 Accord in green. It was a fine trouble free car. However, I considered it a driving appliance. I didn’t hate but I didn’t love it either. In 1998 I purchased a Volvo XC 70 AWD in red. In the eight years I owned that car I had all kinds of problems with the ABS system computer, and the Emissions system. In 2006 when I retired I ordered a 2006 BMW 330 Xi without iDrive. I can’t remember the name of the color but it was a dark gray metallic. I took delivery of the car in Munich. Great car, never had an issue with it for eight years. I’ll give it an affection rating of 8. In 2014 I purchased another 3 series in red with, dare I say it, a Diesel engine. I ordered it with all the available safety features. I also picked this up at the BMW Welt. A great experience. I loved the fuel mileage. However, because of the electronic power steering it wasn’t as much fun to drive. Still it was another trouble free car. In 2018 my right knee started giving me trouble. Years of running, walking and hiking caught up with me and it was uncomfortable getting in and out of the car. After having knee replacement surgery in January of 2019 I decided to purchase an X3M40i in Phytonic Blue it’s fully loaded except of the adaptive suspension and wireless charging. I took delivery of this car at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, SC. Another great experience. I’ll give my current BMW an affection rating of 9. So far another trouble free car.
I don't have a clue why this is the most enjoyable UA-cam video I have seen in years. And even though I'll never get back those 44.44 minutes, I have no regrets. Good stuff, Nick.
I’m from Connecticut (now live in PA) and I was busy when you had your meet at the Porsche dealership.....I should like to meet you one day. You’re a genuine and interesting person (to the extent UA-cam can offer insight). Love what you produce on here
Your tale of your VW Golf made me reminisce about my very own VW-a 1987 VW GTI. When I brought it home my father asked, “ son, what is this ‘Gitee’?” I had it for more than 26 glorious years. The day before I sold it I had repaired. When we traded it for a new car the following day we were offered a thousand dollars just enough for the cost of the repair. I still think of my Gitee to this very day. And for my father I give it an affectionate rating of 11!
Nick, you seem like such a happy positive energy to be around. I really enjoy your videos and its refreshing to see someone genuinely happy and passionate about talking to others through a camera.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video Nick. When the content is good the 45 minute length just flies by. I'm kinda blown away by your lack of love for the 2015 M4 and I hope you have much better luck with your next new 911!
Thanks for the look back at all your cars over the years. I recall fidning your channel on UA-cam around the time you owned the dud Porsche.... but that story of the Golf, what a stroke of luck!
A great set of stories, NIck. Thank you for sharing. BTW, LOVE the pic of you and Tui at 34:27 - she has a beautiful smile on her face. What a sweet girl :)
Hey nick , gidday from Auckland, we met at one of your meet and greets a couple of years ago on the shore, i was driving my beloved red NA miata at the time, but i have just bought my first Porsche!!! ..A humble 986 non S 2.5 5 speed manual but its a start and its a goodn too, owned for 15 years by a retired couple in their 70's with mint maintainance history with conti's and speed science..been watching you for years now and now dont feel so out of place lol ..maybe catchup next time your in town again?
Nick - you are a special guy in a good way. I really loved this video. If it were me telling this story I would have had a box of tissues on the desk. I'm an aging retired NYC public school teacher who fell in love with the 911 watching it climb a hill in the original Woodstock movie (1969). At the time I was a Peace Corps volunteer stationed in California heading to Malaysia. Well, that didn't work out so it was back to the Bronx and my teaching career started. So, here I am at 73 just itching to fulfill my dream - owning a 911! Someday I'll contact you and follow up on your Fairfield connection. Sorry for this long rant.....but I think we share similar DNA. Stay well and thank you. Fred Z.
The Laser was sold in the States as the Mercury Tracer. They were built in the Hermosillo Mexico plant and they were sold in one spec with a high level of trim.
I love the affection for less expensive mainstream cars that Nick has, despite owning some tasty vehicles over the years. It's those early experiences we have, before there's a bit more money, that seem to always be fondly remembered. I can relate. Another great video!
Enjoy the videos. I also live in Fairfield County and my silver 993 made a guest appearance in this video at 38:03. It was right when I purchased in from Porsche of Fairfield and they were performing an engine out reseal & top end work. Since then I have updated suspension, transmission and other bits. I have also owned 20+ cars in past 30 years and this 993 is my favorite car to date. Would like to see more videos on your 993.
Great car reminiscences Matey. It cleared up my confusion over your 911 sagas - I suspected though hadn’t cottoned on to that you had two new 911s going bad, having come late to your channel. Loved your NZ stories with your Dad, having had similar colonial car experiences but in Africa. Hope your old man has recovered, I recall you mentioning that he was crook when you visited him last.
Never stop doing this blog. I love it and your great at it!! I've owned 22 cars and 8 motorcycles over the years. Although I may not have your 'need for speed" I certainly have many car stories. So I really enjoyed listening to yours.
I discovered your channel when I saw one of your rants when you were sitting in your problematic 911. Found that hilarious, so here I am, several years later.
I had the following cars: 1. Renault Clio RSi 1995 - 1.8 110 HP - White, exceptional cubic seats, awesome looks, coupé, great ride. 2. Renault Clio Sport RS2 2004 - 2.0 16 Valve - 172 HP - Blue, hi revving strong engine, looks fantastic, breaks amazing, combined leather/alcantara interior (loved it), kept it's market value: my BEST car of all time, including my dad's cars! 3. Seat Leon Top Sport 2004 - 1.8 Turbo 20 Valve 180 HP - Yellow, first with sunroof, first with turbo, first with 4 doors, first with 6 gears. Very comfortable, very good sound system. The problem was that people mistaken the car to a taxi (I live in Colombia). Other than that is was a great great car. 4. Ssangyong Actyon 2012 - 2.3 150 HP - Black, first automatic car, first SUV, first fully leather interior. Had this car for 7 years, only one mayor problem: oil pump from the gearbox failed. At that moment, a new gearbox would cost more than the car itself. Fortunately, my mechanic solved it for a tenth of the initial dealer's cost. Big inside, well presented but kind of ugly. It was a predecessor of the X4 - X6 - GLE Coupe shapes. 5. Renault Twingo 2011 - 1.2 16 Valve 80 HP - Red. One of the most versatile car ever made, 60 km/gallon, astonishing cargo space, fast enough and very easy to maintain. Helped me a lot through my bankruptcy. Great car, just adored that ugly car. 6. BMW 235i 2014 - Silver. No leather, no sunroof, lousy audio system, extremely hard suspension, automatic but the car was a blast. It pulled enormously, shifts-engine-exhaust sounded very nice. A looker at it's time, had to sell it before my difficult times. 7. Mazda Cx3 - 2.0 146 HP 2018 - Grey, it looks really beautiful but too small, a bit lazy engine but downshifts and the N/A engine sounded very very good. If this car was fitted with the MX5 engine and manual transmission, it could be a very good car. Had it for 7 months after I traded for a X3. 8. Mazda Cx9 2.5T 225 HP - 2018 Blue. When i finally got out of money issues, I sold the Ssangyong and the Twingo to jump into Mazdas. The looks and the luxury of the Cx9 was top notch, but the SUV was the worst car ever had. The painting started dropping, the engine cutted power when in manual mode and pushed, had to change front and rear! rotors when it hitted 20,000 Kms (around 12K miles!), the rear window fell off, the air conditioning do not reach out the third row, the screen went dead from time to time. It was a disaster. I lost so much money with that car... totally hated: my WORST car. 9. BMW X3 2019 i30 XDrive 2.0T 252 HP. Blue, with beige interior. It's been 2 years and I love this SUV. Very very good car, and I like it so much that I really want a M40i, hope by the end of the year I can make it. 10. BMW 530i 3.0 230 HP 2010 with M Pack - Carbon Black. Awesome color, shades of blue and black, beautiful! Very nice looks, confortable, good pace. A looker, although it was 10 years old, a lot of people stared at it like if it was new. Had an aura of appealing. 11. BMW M3 e92 414 HP 2010. MANUAL. Originally in Jerez Black, the first owner wanted to look like a Lambo and changed it to frozen black. For me that color was hideous and painted the car to an original one for that gen: space grey. For me, it's the best color for that shape, at least the ones I could see in real life. I was craving for a manual, N/A engine, one axle traction and if it was a e92, best with sunroof, full leather, iDrive and stock as possible. Well, besides the color, this was the second e92 with manual transmission in my country for over 8 years. I made myself clear to the seller about the color, got a price that let me budget to change the color at a BMW dealership and went for it. The car was in good in general terms but it needs attentions, money and time. My experience with this car led me to want automatic cars for now on. The Renault Clio Sport was so so special, that this 8,400 RPM manual beemer feels soulless compared to it. Possibly it will leave before the end of this year... I also had the chance to drive my dad's cars that were Renault 9, 21, 19, Peugeot 405 STi (astonishing car), Peugeot 406 ST (lousy car), Citröen C5 Gen 1 (best brakes and suspension in conjunction on a big car). For my future cars I want a 2022 BMW M3 Competition G80 XDrive, the BMW X3 M40i (possibly 2020) I mentioned and for a third car: a 2023 Blue Porsche GT3 Touring PDK. I hope someones read and like my car history!
What a cool video! I love the little clips showing the top speed of several cars. Normal people just don't get this insane compulsion for intense driving and lust for speed that we have. So glad to have you in the world.
I currently drive a Mk7 Golf (that I got at a steal too, but not as great as your deal) and hearing you reminisce about your car has made me appreciate mine for what it is all the more. The day I have to get rid of it will be a sad day indeed.
@@NickMurray going back for research purposes only.....Seriously though - fantastic. I would love to have the balls to do a content like that over my car history!
Your wearing my favorite T-shirt I bought from you. It drives my Wife and Daughters Crazy! To me its simple, I've had multiple Kidney stones and it does Burn. But my Family will just Not let me outside with it. I go anyway. Thank You again.........
Nice video, Nick. Like you, I also have gotten through several cars. My neighbors often joke: 'you got a different car now?' After owning an Accord as a first serious car, I bought a 2006 BMW 325i (E90), transitioning to a 2012 BMW 328i (F30) 6 years later,... going through a bone-headed transition through an Accord Hybrid (which I never loved and got rid of it after 7 months) to A 2018 Audi S4 (B9 generation) - which I can say it is the best car I ever owned, getting a fast but not-fun Tesla Model 3 along, to trading up the Audi S4 to get my first Porsche 911 (992 gen.), which is my present sports car, along with my very utilitarian Tesla Model Y (passing the Tesla Model 3 to family). From all these cars, I can say that it was the Audi S4 B9 the one that really stirred the passion... my 'true love'. I regret having traded that car, instead of just paying its value in cash when I got the 911. I wish I had kept it along with the new 911. Of course, the 911 is a true sports car and drives fantastic, and I plan to keep it for a long time... but the Audi had plenty I now miss. Good trip through memory line. BTW, when I configured the 911, your videos were a great source of information about what options to get...
911 993 is the last air cooled, and a legend love it !!! a very interesting choice could be the C4 ZR1 it is incredible in my point of view... thank for sharing !
Great video Nick. I have owned 17 Porsches and 9 Corvettes and never had any major problems. Sorry to hear about your poor experiences with two 911s. I currently have a 911 Turbo 2019 and I am trading in my 60th anniversary Corvette 427 to get a 2022 718 SPYDER. Hope you have great success with your eventual next 911. I have motorcycles too x 3. Thanks for the video on the SPYDER. Cheers
Love the video! Your car history is so similar to mine. I used to have an Alfa Romeo Brera coupe, black with a red leather interior. It which used to have a mind of its own!. Always some issue with it, funny how the technicians scratched their head when the diagnostics would show that there’s nothing wrong with it!. 😂
I think it’s a New Zealand thing.... when I was there on a trip, our caving guide ended all of his stories with “and they all died”. Always completely deadpan and matter a fact about the grim loss of life.
I have a 1991 Acura Integra LS manual. I bought it brand new. It has 225K miles. Still runs so well. I have great affection for this car. I would never sell it. It always put smile on my face every time I drive it! Thanks for another interesting video Nick.
My first experience of loving cars was E30 too. It was mid 80s when my mum was driving that model in driving school. I was about 10 years old and think this will always be my dream car. Later I have 4 different E30 BMWs. Never have a M3 but some cheaper M-models like M550d and M140i. Porsche 911 C2S is still on my buying list. Great story, cheers!
Great video, Nick, It was nice having a decent length video, it was like an old friend stopped by for a pint or two and to share some great stories. Was a bit disappointed there wasn't a secret message at the end though. ;-)
Great video Nick, love the Golf story I’ve had 4 a GL hatch, a GL cabrio, a GTi and a GTi cabrio and sorry to hear about all your Porsche woes - I think I was fairly lucky with the 3 Porsche Boxsters that I owned
Most enjoyable car I ever had was a 1981 mark 1 Golf GTi in dark metallic green with the 1.6L. Sweeter revving than the 1.8 which replaced it. 110 BHP never felt so good
Fun trip down memory lane, I think everyone who loves cars has at least one that they look back on and really regret selling, in my case it was a MK4 VW R32. Like you we've had a number of Audis - several A4 Avants, a TT and a first gen allroad and a number of VWs as well. Our current fleet consists of a Macan and a Miata, both 2019's.
I had the exact same feeling with my Audi RS3 as you with the M4. Super weird but yeah somehow the connection didn't happen. Cool video :) always entertaining to watch.
I give this video affection rating of -1000. Also because you pissed off that VW dealership, they cursed you with the broken 911 that led me to this channel.
Great video Nick. I started following you during the whole debacle with your first 911. Didn't realize William has been with you for so long, he hasn't aged at all. Hopefully third time's a charm in the not too distant future with your next 911. I got a young family that I'm trying to look after first so that's put a damper on my 911 ownership dream for a bit but hopefully I can get there one day.
Amazing car history! Loved watching this video and you had me hooked from start to finish. Looking at my next car, what would you have V6 F type or an M4 competition?🤔
A fun historia Nick. Made me think of the cars I have owned: started with a Datsun 1200, followed by MGB, Monte Carlo, Mazda: RX-7, MX-6, 6, CX-9, KIA EV and I am planning for a 911 (992) something I have always wanted. Hence how I found your channel. Thanks for the memories and yes I have a Harley Davidson Fat Boy; a 2009 but have only got it up to 180 km before I start thinking of consequences ....
That Humber was sold as a Hillman in the U.K. one of Rootes group’s badge engineered cars. Humber was top of the line, Hillman at the bottom with Sunbeam and Singer in between.
I think your most enjoyable car is the 993 :) I also was always very exited, wenn my parents got a new car. I think many of us car enthusiasts were shaped by these experiences.
Hi nick thanks great history, I have a near new BMW 650 m in aus and a 911s 2013 in UK which I adore both. I also owned a 2015 GTi which I cried when I sold, what is it about golf that engage you sooooo much. I will get another that's for sure
Your E30 brought back memories of my E30s, a 325i Motorsport and a 325i Motorsport convertible. Still to this day, I think those inline 6s are the smoothest engines, hence easy to hit the rev limiter. Enjoyed your trip down memory lane.
so be aware that the E30 WILL BE THE CAR, your future son will rip in half when you are fishing :)
Solid point

Great video Nick, I understand your emotional connection to vehicles, I suffer from the same problem.
I currently drive a Mk7 Golf (that I got at a steal too, but not as great as your deal) and hearing you reminisce about your car has made me appreciate mine for what it is all the more.
The day I have to get rid of it will be a sad day indeed.
Between the crazy light behind you, your rambling, and the drone of the cicadas out my window, I’m being lulled into a trance.
Nick - absolutely fantastic! one of your best uploads ever! Fair play to you spending the time doing that.....
Brilliant!
No naked content though.....
Check again... there is full nakness after minute 43
My neighbors often joke: 'you got a different car now?'
After owning an Accord as a first serious car, I bought a 2006 BMW 325i (E90), transitioning to a 2012 BMW 328i (F30) 6 years later,... going through a bone-headed transition through an Accord Hybrid (which I never loved and got rid of it after 7 months) to A 2018 Audi S4 (B9 generation) - which I can say it is the best car I ever owned, getting a fast but not-fun Tesla Model 3 along, to trading up the Audi S4 to get my first Porsche 911 (992 gen.), which is my present sports car, along with my very utilitarian Tesla Model Y (passing the Tesla Model 3 to family).
A car guy's version of "To All the Boys I've Loved Before"
Great story telling. Really liked your bmw325i when I saw it at the Auckland meet. Surprised your still alive!
Great memories. And that purchase of the VW Golf is really awesome, like wining a jackpot. Fortune favours the brave.
Absolutely great and fascinating story! A real pleasure to watch!
Wow Nick thanks for sharing these stories
One of my favourite episodes from you 👍
40 minutes of Nick's life stories, great just great
911 993 is the last air cooled, and a legend love it !!! a very interesting choice could be the C4 ZR1 it is incredible in my point of view... thank for sharing !
Very interesting and always well done! I thought I’d never make 44 minutes, but I sat through it all.
Cheers
Great video Nick. Really enjoyed it. I lusted after a E30 325is in the day and still want one! Crazy money now though.........
An excellent video Nick.
Very similar background. Always washed my fathers Holden EJ and then drove it around the streets at the age of 12. My dad also didn’t kill me.
Best video yet! Keep ‘em coming!
"...killing the occupants. And then I hit them. And so yeah, that poor Laser."
That would be an interesting thing to put on a t-shirt.
Yeah he comes across pretty cold! i think he has asperger's or something
Highly likely it is sarcasm judging by the content he has been putting out into the world.
I think it’s a New Zealand thing.... when I was there on a trip, our caving guide ended all of his stories with “and they all died”. Always completely deadpan and matter a fact about the grim loss of life.
Life's funny, how people, watching you, can see you, possibly better than you can, see yourself, Nick. 👍👍👍
I have a 1991 Acura Integra LS manual. I bought it brand new. It has 225K miles. Still runs so well. I have great affection for this car. I would never sell it. It always put smile on my face every time I drive it! Thanks for another interesting video Nick.
The way it should be
My first experience of loving cars was E30 too.
More long videos nick! you're one of my favorite youtubers :D
Man, with these stories, I'm surprised (and glad) you are still alive. And I'm only halfway thru the video.
I give this video affection rating of -1000. Also because you pissed off that VW dealership, they cursed you with the broken 911 that led me to this channel.
Great video Nick, thanks for sharing
Great video Nick. I started following you during the whole debacle with your first 911. Didn't realize William has been with you for so long, he hasn't aged at all. Hopefully third time's a charm in the not too distant future with your next 911. I got a young family that I'm trying to look after first so that's put a damper on my 911 ownership dream for a bit but hopefully I can get there one day.
23:32 I remember Debbie from one of the early videos. I miss her too! Where is she now?
Love your honesty. Great video.
I had this A3 in that color and loved it. It was a wimpy 1.6 but beautiful to look at. Had to trade it in when babies came along.
It is funny what you said about the Alfa you had, I had three Alfas all bought new that were great
to drive but just terrible to own. Great story.
I think your most enjoyable car is the 993 :)
I also was always very exited, wenn my parents got a new car.
Nick that’s a great car history!!! Didn’t like the dual cultch stuff... but you got it right in the end! Cheers mate
Your E30 brought back memories of my E30s, a 325i Motorsport and a 325i Motorsport convertible. Still to this day, I think those inline 6s are the smoothest engines, hence easy to hit the rev limiter. Enjoyed your trip down memory lane.
