This was interesting. When I joined the Army I had to leave my B&G with my parents who he was also bonded to. He began to hate me so much during that time that I couldn't go near him without him charging me and screaming super loud. After 7 long years of service I was able to bring my B&G home with me. I was afraid he'd be hard to deal with but he instantly became his sweet self. I think was just so mad at me. He even bit me several times, hard!! I have a few videos of him, he is funny again!!
After he bit you why did you do? I got bit for the first time and I’m scared of him. I’m scared of him buying me again or him biting my kids. His force was strong and it could definitely broken my kids fingers 😮

@lucylovesdesi08 I filmed this segment in between my cleaning routine. I pulled bowls for the dishwasher and I pulled toys out for cleaning. I also want the viewer to see the birds well. I recycled old phone books and hung half a phonebook in each macaw cage. By the end of the day, everybody shredded everything up completely. What a mess.... but they had fun. Today, I have to clean it all up with a shop vac.

Hello, I will have two Scarlet Macaw, very soon, my Mom and Dad bought me one bird cage ,just very much like your, and I will have Tatiana and Rio in the same cage. My point is if they can be in the same cage? They aren't aggressive, as the business says, I just wanted to know. Thanks!

I think the second part of this is the most important. Not everyone can handle rehabilitating a rescued bird. The parrot I rescued is amazing, I love him to death. Great video! I have the same green playstand for my macaw, out of the many he has lol. Clicker training is a great way to build a relationship with your bird. My blue and gold and I have came such a long way and I've even had him since he was a baby! (That didnt help like they say it does lol) Im always searching for new things to teach him :)
Great job with the training. You have such a relaxed presence about you. Thanks for sharing the video. Great learning. Please tell me about your huge cage. I can look it up. I want it for a mini Macaw and sun conure. I love the size of the cage. What is the bar spacing?
This method is called clickertraining. It enforces wanted behavior. By clicking the moment the bird is showing that behavior - in this case, when it touches the stick - and rewarding it, the bird will associate the clicking with treats. You will be able to teach them all sorts of things.
Why are these birds cages not loaded full of toys? If I was going to think someone knew what they were talking about I'd expect so see birds with everything they need in the first place .
My blue and gold macaw is almost 8 y.o.and has become aggressive with me... He flies on to my shoulder and bites hard my cheek or hits my head and then flies away. I have no idea how to deal with that... Is there any chance his behavior will change? The first time he did it was last spring, but after a couple of bites it stopped. This year it has been going on for almost a month. I'm getting afraid every time he flies on my shoulder. Is that a hormonal issue? Any advice will be much appreciated
How is it going? I have a parrot Amazon, male, is about 10 years old, makes 9 I have. the problem is that you left touching and caressing, but is increasingly more aggressive. usoel clicker with my dog, I know how it works the clicker can I use it to start to have better relationship? does that food give you when you use clicker with a parrot, so it's quick to eat? Best regards
Is it likely that I will be able to do this with a 65 year old macaw? My grandmother has one and he has always been horribly aggressive towards everyone but her. But when she's gone, he will be mine and I'm hoping he will come around after so many years of behaving this way.
I have a question Scott. Why do you have him touch the metal bar first? I'm sure you have a good reason, I just don't know what it is. Clearly you have been successful and I applaud the patient way you deal with Mo. I haven't checked out the Click Group yet, but I will. I have a 20 yr old wild caught amazon from Panama. His girlfriend died 2 years ago and he misses her. Since she passed he has been less aggressive. I hven't been bit in over a year.
I know it's been a long time since you last posted but I have been living with my girlfriend that has bonded with a blue+gold macaw and throughout the year it has been very aggressive towards me no matter what I try or do. It behaves exactly like what I see here from but is very sweet to my girlfriend. There really has not been any progress and I am afraid of there never being any progress. Besides the stick+clicker training was there anything in particular you did to win Moe over?
ok so moe is aggressive i also have a blue and gold macaw about a year and a half old but how did you manage to get moe out of the cage to the t stand plz ready to train and then how did you get him back in to the cage plz this info will help a lot
I was without a steady living situation for a while and specifically left him with a trusted friend of 10 years and the only one I know with bird experience. After a short while she decided she didn’t wanna give him back and it took 4 months to get him back so at this point he probably thought I abandon him. We got him back I knew he’d probably be mad at me which he didn’t seem to bad but this bird who I had extremely well socialized with other people and who wanted nothing more than to snuggle(which i mean sit contently) is now extremely hand aggressive/defensive he acts very afraid of hands. We’re not sure if he had been struck or if he was ignored a lot or what, but he was the sweetest thing and now he isn’t shoulder trained and is forceful about it (was never allowed up) chases after you if you touch or grab anything around him. And is now also extremely hormonally triggered on top of his general biting. I obviously don’t react to his biting but I don’t think my arms and hands can take any more of it. I’ve only ever had new baby birds I don’t know how to train “adopted” birds... I feel useless to him. He steps up okay but once he IS up he just wants to bite. Sometimes it’s aggressive flirting and sometimes it’s just feeling for skin and just wants to hurt. We've tried doing everything within our power to make him not so hormonally triggered but it doesn't seem to matter. Our only fun middle ground with him these days is talking back and forth while he sits on top of his cage.
I have a B&G macaw about 9 years old and Im his 4th home From what i hear the last homes werent good so hes aggressive i think hes beginning to warm up to me i can get him to take food and treats from me but not step up on anything he usually runs to where i cant reach him. I do let him out almost everyday and trick him to go back in by putting a peanut in his dish is that okay to do and how do i get him to step up without lunging at me or attacking what i put in front of him. i do go slow
Can you help me?? I'm adopting a Blue and Gold Macaw that's 22 yrs old. I visited her for 1st time ladt night and owner said she only likes males. which seemed true since she liked my husband and lunged at me. Is it possible with patience and lots of love, to get her to like me. I heard that gender bias birds never change.... Also, she plucked all her chest feathers out, her owners said she does it due to no attention
Nicole Butterfield I feel your pain....me and my wife adopted a 20 yr old blue and gold. Hates males (me) and is interacting with my wife all the time. Still working on stepping up with her but allows her to pet him and kiss him on the beak. I wouldn't dare do either one. Lunges at me every time and I try some of the pointers and none work
Recently have gotten a B&G male 17 from a friend who has died.!luckily Zeke knows me since he was 3 and he had known my kids , youngest is 17. But he has been neglected the past few years. Thankfully he already has stopped plucking he is bare on legs shoulder under wings heart breaking!
My Macaw acts almost exactly like this. I have had her since Feb. She let's me touch her beak and I can touch her while bathing but otherwise her behavior is just like ur bird
i got a fiischer lovebird yesteday and tonigh i tried to hold him or she, don't know the sex yet.... she/he beat me so, so much and I am with my index and thumbe very sore....i tried to hold it for 15 minutes so far....I will be wacthing all your videos for some tips, suggestions..... if a little bird can bite so hard to make me feel sore....i can't image and will be very afraid this huge bird of yours ;)
Scott, thank you for showing your audience what responsible parrot stewardship entails, both in your video and your comments. I've posted a video in the same vein; search on Mindy Nobles or A Parrot's Life. (Apologies in advance that beginning and ending scenes are barely audible.) I'm curious. Are your parrots flighted? Do they have recall training? How much time do they have out of their cages? Do they spend time outdoors? It appears that you've done impressive work with Moe. Bless you!
i would LOVE to talk to you. we inherited a blue and gold macaw. He is my boyfriends dads bird but they didn't have room for him and we took him. Charlie is close to 22 yrs old. When they first got him he was played with all day everyday but then when my bf's sister had her baby charlie had to be put up and he got mean. He was in the cage all day long. they would open the cage long enough for him to eat. :( so it took me forever to get him to trust me enough for me to touch him.
I would love to pet my male macaw daily but he just doesn't let me, he only loves my girlfriend and lets her carry him. every time I approach to him he charges at me. even when his on his cage and I walk by he charges at me. i give him treats and he goes for my fingers. I don't know what to do.
Hi. I just inherited a jardine parrot today. He has had two prior owner whom I know nothing about. He is agressive toward me and bit and drew blood twice. When he bites...I say no and walk away and dont give him a treat. Should i according to u not say no or not walk away? thanks
walking away from you bird after him biting you is the worse thing you can do while training him not to bite... it just reinforces the behavior and shows him that whenever he doesn't want your attention he can just bite you and you'll leave him alone
thanks, this was from a long time ago...and I had done more research...and found out some things. We have actually come along way since then and he now even knows some tricks: turn, wave, fetch and target... I am also getting him used to a harness so i can take him to the park. but it is a slow process and i dont even know if it is going to happen this summmer...I dont want him to be afraid of it. The one thing that is jut so aggrivating though is that he bites me whenever he is on the floor. No, he attacks me when he is on the floor. I do not know how to keep him off the floor let along keep him from biting me when on the floor and cant seem to find the answer in researching except that alot of parrots do this. If you have any advice i would greatly appreciate it thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is also extrememly posessive. and must have my attention at all times... he has chewed up my cell phones and my computer keys and anything that i touch including my purse because that is what i take with me when i leave. He gets alot of attention but it is so out of hand he has complete control over me. lol
Dana Berki hmm.... the only thing I can think of is that he might think the floor is his turf.. try looking up stuff about cage aggression... and see if any of that helps?? sorry lol I've never had a bird attack me while its on the floor lol usually when mine end up on the floor they will climb up my leg just to get off the floor lol
charlie is a good bird. but he's not takin care of the way he should be. i have a 11 month old baby now so he doesn't get to come out much like he did when we made friends. He use to come up and sit on my shoulder or just follow me around the house while i was pregnant and my other lil girl was at school but Charlie doesn't like my 9 yr old and sky is TERRIFIED of him :( I would love to chat with you so i can actually get some info on these birds and what to feed him other then seed and peanu
your birds are confused - your training is not what I would recommend, you have the television on a few feet away from the cage while you are training, for your Macaws to bond with and train with you, they need your full attention with no television. also as stated in several comments you have not one toy in either of your Macaws cages. rather sad for me to watch this.
Start by getting Charlie to a qualified Avian Veterinarian for a health exam. There is a ton of info on proper diet and the avian vet can assist you. I recommend using a quality pelleted food for 80 percent of the diet. Fresh fruits and veggies, some grains, seeds and nuts make up the balance of the diet. go to Yahoo.com and search for the Bird Click Group. Here you can learn in a group forum how to train your bird using clicker trainin
Do you still have Moe? I just recently rescued a blue and gold named Moe. He is the same age. Just a little agression issues. I'm the only one who can pet him.
@CAIO SILVA, that really sucks, but you can't blame people who have them as pets because most people buy the captive bred, not straight from the wild. If anything, blame the people in your country who capture them straight from the wild to sell them
CAIO SILVA Listen MORON. These are rescued birds. If they were released in the wild they will die!! Birds that have been bred in captivity cannot survive in the wild. Another point is that there in Brazil you are destroying the environment so quickly that YOUR country will be responsible for it's decline by destroying their habitat. Get your facts straight before you start mouthing off and being abusive.
CAIO SILVA It's been illegal to import them to the US as pets since about 1991. Any birds obtained through stores or breeders are completely captive-bred. Brazil has a huge problem with smuggling birds out of it's own country to sell, and the surrounding areas.
Each animal should live in their natural environment ... this is the law of nature, period. Any comments about this is that people do not care about the environment ... The Brazilian q pollutes and degride your environment is wrong! But one "Gringo" come here and take back what is ours is worse !!
Moe is a very pretty Blue and Gold Macaw. He just needs to straighten up and be a good bird or he's going to have to be kept imprisoned in his cage for the rest of his life for being a bad and aggressive bird. He will no longer be safe around anybody except for Sunny. Macaws don't get a good whippen or a good spanking like a little kid (human or real person) does for being bad because if you do that plus throw them in the cage afterwards, they will no longer like you anymore as there owner. The end result would be that the macaw will always hate you and will hate you for good when they see you again and will always remember what you did to them. Because of that good spanking that the macaw got, the end result will be that they will always bite you and they will bite you hard in the long term. What Moe needs to do in the long term is to go back the way he was, a very good hard working bird. It just takes time and patience. Scott Robins, I would have to say to you is that if Moe does become a good bird again, you need to take Moe to McDonald's for some fries and a burger for his treat for becoming a good bird again, just kidding. Keep up the good work with Moe and hope he gets better with positive reinforcement.

*He seems really distracted and no doubt he would rather be in the area behind you*. I have a Huge 35 year old wild caught Green wing that was really mean when I got him (surgically sexed) but before long he came around. I had to teach him not to put to much pressure on my fingers when he was "mouthing " me by using the word "easy", I never said it unless it was too much pressure and he knows exactly what the word means. He is sitting on my left shoulder preening my hair as I am writing this. I used a much different method to tame him, I displayed disapproval when he tried to bite and told him no. If he was too noisy I went into the other room, he did not like that! He would start talking and singing trying to get me back, before long he knew exactly what was going on. He does does not like anyone else at all but he has not made me bleed in at least ten years no matter what I do. When a Macaw gets this old they are cleaver and learn quick.
Actually, they have the intelligence of a # year old, and I have basically had mine since I was six, she isn't abused, if the price doesnt deter people I don't know what does, I want more happy additions to my 3 cats and my 14 year old Leonberger.
Treats are supposed to be for positive actions all your doing is throwing way too many treats at him your giving him a treat every time he bites the stick so your telling him every time you bite something you will get a treat I don't think this is a good method but if it's working for you god bless you got to remember a lot of abused birds don't like sticks
It's called target training, it is a very widely used technique for training ALL types of parrots, from budgies to macaws, generally they are supposed to just touch it gently or very lightly nibble, this did look like he was biting a bit hard but then again that could be caused by the increased aggression problem. This technique is very useful and sometimes essential and can be used to train parrots to do all sorts of things like stepping onto your hand/arm, flight recall, or to be friendly towards other people/strangers. It does not teach the parrot to bite everything, only that stick, which eventually wont even be needed anymore so he won't have the need to bite anything.
I would hope that you might consider re-homing Charlie if he is not being cared for as he should be. The diet you describe is not good for him and will definately lead to health problems. At the very least he should be on a pelleted diet and offered fruit and vegetables. I know it's hard to think about but a rescue organization will give him the attention he needs while waiting for a good home.
Two new Australian, two males, indoor,,,, as soon, with other they turned on each other Fair enough, then one tried the females, but they got irritated, frighten So,...... The agressive, cool of, some days alone, close to, the groups. .... But I think, it's naturel,,,,,, been two males, forced together, 5 years, and coming On strong, that's it, from captives, rescue, and. Both love fresh air, green Stuff,

Aww😂
Awesome education and encouragement. Thank you.
That cage seems to be pretty bare. Perhaps some toys would calm Moe down
I guess you didn't read or listen to him about why cages are bare.
Sunny is sooo well behaved...You are an awesome bird keeper!

People leave macaws in empty cages with no human care for many many hours and then the parrot has behaviour issues. Really? What a surprise !

Great video! I have the same green playstand for my macaw, out of the many he has lol. Clicker training is a great way to build a relationship with your bird. My blue and gold and I have came such a long way and I've even had him since he was a baby! (That didnt help like they say it does lol) Im always searching for new things to teach him :)
btw, this isn't my 1st macaw...I had a hybrid macaw and she hated both me and my husband at first, the after time she loved us
Great job with the training.
If I was going to think someone knew what they were talking about I'd expect so see birds with everything they need in the first place
.
Haboy Nuke no one helped you, you still have your macaw?
What do you recommend for training treats?
Lunges at me every time and I try some of the pointers and none work
I feel you too! It happen with my cockatoo! He bite me before so I was more reluctant to touch him.
No sorry , once they chose a particular gender they stick with them and don’t change
Bookkraz only time would tell
What is the size of the cage ?
My Macaw acts almost exactly like this. I have had her since Feb. She let's me touch her beak and I can touch her while bathing but otherwise her behavior is just like ur bird
i got a fiischer lovebird yesteday and tonigh i tried to hold him or she, don't know the sex yet....
she/he beat me so, so much and I am with my index and thumbe very sore....i tried to hold it for 15 minutes so far....I will be wacthing all your videos for some tips, suggestions.....
if a little bird can bite so hard to make me feel sore....i can't image and will be very afraid this huge bird of yours ;)
hi, i was wanting to no what and why are u useing that clicking thing, and what is ot and what is it for?
Moving wings if not hurt
Scott your video is great. I recently have
How did u get him out of the cage behind the scenes?
Scott, thank you for showing your audience what responsible parrot stewardship entails, both in your video and your comments. I've posted a video in the same vein; search on Mindy Nobles or A Parrot's Life. (Apologies in advance that beginning and ending scenes are barely audible.)
I'm curious. Are your parrots flighted? Do they have recall training? How much time do they have out of their cages? Do they spend time outdoors?
It appears that you've done impressive work with Moe. Bless you!
do you know if your bird is male or female???
did you take all there toys out of their cages?
i would LOVE to talk to you. we inherited a blue and gold macaw.
I think, intelligent, to a intelligent, no on top off,
This dinosaur, out smarts us ......
I would love to pet my male macaw daily but he just doesn't let me, he only loves my girlfriend and lets her carry him. every time I approach to him he charges at me. even when his on his cage and I walk by he charges at me. i give him treats and he goes for my fingers. I don't know what to do.
Just found your channel, did you get Moe’s aggression under control?
A few questions. Is it better to rescue a bird, or hand raise it from a baby? Where did you get those cages shown in the video?
parker benz You've probably already gotten this answer elsewhere, but adopting a rescue is pretty much a better idea than raising a baby.
He gets alot of attention but it is so out of hand he has complete control over me. lol
Dana Berki Make a video of your birdy :D
Dana Berki hmm.... the only thing I can think of is that he might think the floor is his turf.. try looking up stuff about cage aggression... and see if any of that helps?? sorry lol I've never had a bird attack me while its on the floor lol usually when mine end up on the floor they will climb up my leg just to get off the floor lol
What's with the clicker
charlie is a good bird. but he's not takin care of the way he should be. i have a 11 month old baby now so he doesn't get to come out much like he did when we made friends.
What happened l hope your well we need more people who save birds like you out there
Hi aim the bird whisperer
your birds are confused - your training is not what I would recommend, you have the television on a few feet away from the cage while you are training, for your Macaws to bond with and train with you, they need your full attention with no television. also as stated in several comments you have not one toy in either of your Macaws cages. rather sad for me to watch this.
How did you get Moe out of the cage ? and still keep 10 fingers ?? LOL
I have a blue and gold macaw
Bastards !! macaws are endangered here in Brazil and people like you are to blame !!! their place is the forest and not a prison! fuck you!
NEVER HIT A BIRD PERIOD

My birds name is Sunny 😵

wow, my bird is not like dat
Actually, they have the intelligence of a # year old, and I have basically had mine since I was six, she isn't abused, if the price doesnt deter people I don't know what does, I want more happy additions to my 3 cats and my 14 year old Leonberger.
y both macaws r not in one cage
saheb siddiqui They'll rip each other to shreds if they're aggressive
how bad are there bites ?
i might get a non-tame macaw just for breeding
He doesnt even have any toys no wonder he is mean
I would hope that you might consider re-homing Charlie if he is not being cared for as he should be. The diet you describe is not good for him and will definately lead to health problems. At the very least he should be on a pelleted diet and offered fruit and vegetables. I know it's hard to think about but a rescue organization will give him the attention he needs while waiting for a good home.
