Race is very important to Americans especially black Americans. Being the minority that feel under represented they feel they have to hold on really tight to everything that originated in black communities. That's why they're always complaining about cultural appropriation. Jamaica is majority black so we don't have such insecurities, every with Jamaicans is not based around race which often times enrage African Americans.

I'm just some English dude who sucks at languages but has tried once or twice to learn Patois (as I think it's a very beautiful, elegant & expressive language) but it sounds to my ear like an actual concerted effort to speak the language rather than a lazy 'accent'. (Would certainly be interested to know from Jamaicans if I'm reading this wrong though.) Assuming I'm right though, it's interesting how different the general attitude is compared to, say, if somebody in the public eye was trying to speak German, or Spanish, or whatever other European language...

I was just watching reggae artist Spice interview on the Wendy Willianw and she said basically same thing. She said most Jamaicans take it as a compliment mostly. Most Americans are soft and get all know offensive about anything , people here in the states would be calling him a "culture vulture" instead of taking this as a compliment. He is a little cringey but IMO he's embracing the culture , not trying exploiting it or make a mockery of it
I'm not jamaican. I'd love to go there. I love the accent. I live in the northeast near Boston. We have an accent that people love to mimic as well. No offense taken in them using it. It’s backwards to say they are obsessed with race. Racial inequality is still very much a thing in the USA. Things that seems small elsewhere can be very sensitive in America. When you come from somewhere like Jamaica that is majority Black, even though the country is still echoing from colonialism (see: demanding reparations) they aren’t dealing with neighbours and coworkers who make racist comments or leaders and authorities that still enact racist policies every day like in the USA. Before anyone jumps down my throat, my family is Jamaican.

I went to Jamaica with my girlfriend and one of the guys that worked at the place we were staying took us to street parties and i was a little nervous I accidentally said "we are sticking out like a white thumb" I meant a sore thumb 🤣 everyone was laughing and the dj said "you do what she do" she was tweaking. I said my body doesn't do that lol everyone was so cool tho. We wanted to go to a sketchy part but we didn't know it was sketch and everyone was saying "no, you can't go there" they were worried about us. Looking out.

My landlord in Brooklyn was Jamaican. He had me over for Thanksgiving. I got to experience their culture a bit deeper, eat some food I never had (an entire fish head!) And learn some interesting language and slang. It was all love. I'm a blue eyed blonde hair white guy. From my experience, it's always white people or overly righteous and bigoted black people who want to make me feel guilty for cultural approriation by simply experiencing life from another race and cultural perspective. It's really frustrating that they invent racism out of thin air.

Before anyone says that imitating a Jamaican accent is racist you should consider that there are a few white Jamaicans about who have the accent naturally and probably would be a bit annoyed if you suggested to them that they were being racist for speaking in their natural tongue.
