  • In this active imagination exercise, we’re going explore the influence of the Father Archetype in our lives. Our understanding of parenting and the nuances of our relationships with our parents are often coloured by this archetype. Individuation and becoming who we really are involves recognising our parents as individuals, as well as representatives of deeper archetypal patterns. This process requires us to acknowledge the gifts and care they have given us, while also confronting and reconciling with their limitations, and ceasing to hold them to an impossible ideal. By cultivating a relationship with the Father Archetype, we can transcend personal histories and connect with a more universal understanding of authority and leadership, allowing us to see ourselves and our own parents more clearly, as well as embody the Father Archetype in a healthy form towards ourselves and others.
Remember that whatever you experience during this exercise is a reflection of your own mind and inner wisdom.
After completing the exercise, reflect on your experience and the insights you gained. How was your experience of the Father Archetype exercise? What insights did you come to?
If you would like, share your thoughts in the comments below to connect with others and deepen your understanding.
Active Imagination is a technique developed by the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung for engaging with the unconscious mind. Jung considered Active Imagination to be the most powerful way to access the unconscious mind and a vital technique for attaining wholeness of personality.

I saw a bulldog sitting at my living room table. As I sit across from him, I see disgust written all over his face. He is not impressed with our interaction. He doesn't like me but I am meant to serve him at his every whim, even if it destroys me.
I tell the dog thank you for it because I am much stronger because of it. I don't easily give up because of it. But I"m also a kind human being because I don't think so well of myself that I can't relate to others.
He asks me to make him a sandwich and I laugh because ....no....and we are done.Oh but I do tell him he has done the best he could with what he knew.
    Thanks!

Hey SleepyLee, good job doing this exercise. This one seems to be pointing to some particularly important material. Do you feel you ended the exercise on good terms with the archetype? The task involves deepening a relationship to the archetype as much as integrating what needs to be integrated. Aim to reach a place where your biological father and the father archetype are seen as distinct. Please excuse the relatively concise message as I am travelling currently.

When you mentioned the symbol i first saw the chemical symbol for Biohazard. It then turned into a bird - the phoenix.
It was flying around and spitting fire. The whole scene was in my bedroom as a child of around 4.
Altough it was frantic at the beginning, its purposed towards me shifted into a nurturing and providing role.
As a parting gift he gave me a painting brush.
After asking him in free form why the overall image was such a starkly different from his current role he told me to change my perspective and not be engulfed by rage, but be fired up to achieve something to make him and me proud.
Thank you very much for this exercise!
I am follower of Jungs work for quite some time, but this was the first time i did an active imagination. Before that i was more concerend with the shadow.
I am very grateful and hope you can do more of these :)

Excellent work! And thank you for the positive feedback on the exercise. Active imagination can be an exceptionally impactful inner work tool. Your experience of the Father Archetype is particularly rich with symbolism. It sounds like it really cut to the heart of some deep material. The Father Archetype clearly seems to be encouraging you to embrace the creative spirit and rebirth something on your own terms. I wonder about the biohazard symbol and whether this represents some kind of danger or resistance to this energy, with the phoenix (and fire, signifying will) symbolising what might be possible when worked through.
You might be interested to try the following exercises on this channel as a next step: Creator Archetype, The Wall, The Shadow Room.
Please excuse my conciseness as I am currently travelling and typing on a phone. But thanks again, and great to hear your first experience of active imagination was such a powerful one.

My father archetype gave me a Neptune symbol and was near a quiet pond.
He asked to be acknowledged and that he is taking care of me all the time.
    Thank you ☀️

Great work. Sound like a very productive encounter. The Neptune and calm water are interesting, since these are also related to feminine symbolism. It's like he's encouraging you to go further into the oceanic expanse of the unconscious, and giving you the reassurance to do so.

@@makeitconscious this is a beautiful interpretation and I will ponder on it. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about it.
