  • Please join me in my ten minute film of a beautiful cruise along the Rhine, from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein. This is the finest way to travel to this glorious, historic medieval city in the canton of Schaffhausen. You could make the 11 mile (17km) journey by train in thirty minutes, and there are an amazing 39 trains a day (the Swiss are serious about public transport!); or by car or taxi in 20 minutes; but these methods will mean you will miss some of the wonderful sights and the fresh Swiss open air that the cruise has to offer. There are six modern motor vessels plying their trade on this section of the river, and you will see several of them in my film. The Rhine is quite wide at this point, and the ships are controlled by means of posts which direct them to pass to the right or to the left, rather like slalom skiers passing to one side or the other in downhill racing. Small craft, of which there are many, can pass either side of the marker posts. At one point a flotilla of Canadian canoes approaches, and at another the Captain has to dodge swimmers. The countryside, seen from the deck of the ship, is a mix of vineyards, housing and many trees. Everybody seems to have a boat moored by the bank.
It is possible to make the trip between Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein and take in the largest waterfall in Europe, the Rhine Falls, in the same day. Stein am Rhein is a small town, but charming and deserving of some time devoted to exploring its pedestrianised streets and medieval squares.
