  • Uganda's Lion Population Plunges | Gujarat Model the Solution? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Uganda has issued an alert. It says its lion population is dwindling. Uganda's lion population has fallen from 493 to 275 between 2014 and 2023. This sharp fall is mostly due to human-animal conflict. The people who live near Uganda's national parks often come into conflict with lions who leave the sanctuaries. Uganda is alarmed with the decline in lions because it depends on them to attract tourists. But as African lion populations plummet, Asiatic lion populations are thriving. Asiatic lions are found in the Indian state of Gujarat. Gujarat has been championing lion conservation for years, and these efforts have been recognised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Can the Gujarat model help African nations in their quest to conserve the lion population?
Note: The story is narrated using an AI voice-over application

Being a Gujju I would love to mention that Maldhari community living around Gir National Park are also reasons behind this success, as they sees lions as vehicle of Goddess Amba. I would also mention that in my school syllabus I also read stories of how lion cubs and Maldhari children used to play together in past ( according to some legends, may or may not be exactly true but also can't deny the possibility) 🦁🦁🦁

As a Ugandan, I have said this on several other video comments. Uganda needs a population management policy because it's causing many socio-economic problems for the country. A country with a population of 45 million with several water bodies yet a small geographical area is bound to have such problems.

    1) Success of Gir Lion Conservation program is SOLELY attributed to PM Modi, he ideated, conceived, planned, executed the program while he was CM.. and now as PM he trying his best to converve and even re-introduce Cheetah back into Indian ecosystem. Whichever state BJP / NDA govt is conservation (with people's particpation) is high on agenda. Like Assam.

Its mind boggling how rare lions are there now (275). That is so rare.... that would mean there are well over 163,000 humans living in Uganda now for each and every 1 lion still living there.
And Nigeria? There are only 50 lions remaining. That means species to species.... for every single lion living in Nigeria there are now over 4 million (4,260,000) humans!

I hope the Uganda government takes note and tries to improve upon human-animal conflict resolution. Sometimes they come to eat domestic animals because not enough to eat in Wild, we cause disappear of water dry land and no more wild servive without water.. massive deforestation for farming mostly grazing could cause disappear of many plant tribes and trees lead to dry atmosphere. Because of this many lions and Wild animals loosing food and house to live in. We also occupied all the land for our food which land was equally their Too and they has to servive.. in the name of business mostly western businessman wanted to sel food products to the world more then they require not just make money because they want rule world with food business causing this disappear. Thus is reason we equally promoting growing massive world wide and within the required land so that wild will have plenty of space to survive..

Why should Uganda go to India to learn about conservation of lions when they can just drive down to the nearby Tanzania 🇹🇿 - which has the largest number of lions in the entire universe (16,000)?
I guess it's Indian pride. They think other nations are stupid and they are the smart ones. Which is wrong.
For the record India has around 600 lions in total, which is not a bigger margin compared to Uganda. Mxm...
Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia are all in Africa and they hold more than 92% of the world's lion population.

In India population of lion went from 20 to 700.While Tanzania always had more lions & rate of increase in lion population is lower than India. That's why Indian model is seen effective & inspiring one. Arrogance in Africans will led to there downfall again. We Indians love & learn from West though we were there colony but today's westerners has nothing to do with there ancestor's deeds. Like Gandhi said an eye for eye will make whole world blind one day. Africas hatred for west will led to it's re-colonisation by East.

Government of Gujarat won't allow it. Also, people of Gir/Gujrat also won't allow. They see lions aa their Pride.

Lion conservation is not automatically equal to wild life tourism. Governments put in great efforts to conserve these species, who are not just for tourism purposes alone.

Asiatic lions grow just as big as south African lions in captivity but same size as central and west african lions. Asiatic lions used to be lot bigger in the past, maybe bigger than South african ones but their genes pool collapsed due to extinction. Conservation effort may do them good.
