Li Mei in MK1 actually looks very close to her MKX version. Tanya on the other hand, had a drastic change in her design. Pretty much unrecognizable from her previous incarnations. I can understand why people would be unhappy with it but I personally don't have much of an issue with it, as long as her personality stays true to her character.

I personally liked Li Mei as defender of her village and the people’s hero. Really humanized Outworlders and showed that there were decent and good folk on the other side just trying to get by too. But it’s nice just to see her evolve back into a playable character again.

I just thought she becomes more awesome and interesting in Mortal Kombat 1, due to her gameplay, new backstory, and her interactions with characters. I know the game hasn’t come out yet, but the trailers got me intrigued more often.
honestly would’ve been cool to have her as a sort of outworld counterpart to Liu Kang, had the potential from her debut in Deadly Alliance; -martial artist from a humble village. -virtuous, with a strong sense of justice. -personal conflict against Shang Tsung. -trains under Bo’Rai Cho in Deception.
I must be the minority that actually likes Tanya’s new look, personally I find her very charismatic and intimidating. She moves from the role of a treacherous henchwoman to an honorable leader/defender of the royal family is a huge leap in character development, and the fact that she’s one of the most experienced and eldest members of Umgadi justifies her appearance
I like it too, especially the personality change. I hated the mustache twirling henchwoman role, but as the leader of Milena's guard who is fiercely loyal to her she's ten times better

Mkx story mode tanya was heavily whitewashed and this new version of tanya was blackened and uglyfied. True tanya looks more like her mk4 design.
