Very cool that you went here. I just discovered bald a few days ago and you through his channel. I wondered if one of you went to this city. My grandfather and his family immigrated from here to Canada. So it’s nice to see and learn more of this city.

The rotunda that you saw was originally built in 1909 to commemorate the battle of Poltava fought between the Swedish and the Russians under Peter the Great. The battle was won by the Russians. It was a very significant win for the Russians in their history putting an end to Swedish claims and incursions to that region. That rotunda was destroyed during world war 2. After the war the rotunda was rebuilt by the soviets as a mark of friendship between Soviet nations with Certain inscriptions louding friendship of different Soviet people. But after Ukraine became independent, the inscriptions were changed to reflect Ukrainian nationalist theme.

This is where the battle of Poltava (of course) happened. More than 20,000 men we killed that fateful day in 1709. It was the turning point of the Great Northern War. 🇸🇪🇷🇺 🇺🇦
My favorite band @Sabaton made a song about this battle called “Poltava”.

Hi. Poltava Museum of Local Lore isn't a Soviet building. It was built in 1891, Ukrainian modern style
