SD is the only band where you can play 5 albums in a row and not get tired of listening.
Fact. And every album has it's own unique personality.
In my case that is like a Wednesday!
“He’s got a scar across his face. He wears a hearing aid“.
Such unique lyrics and interesting visuals, all wrapped up in tasty chord changes and nasty funk!
👍🏼🎸🎼❤️😎
I remember watching an interview with Donald & Walter, and they were asked why they chose to portray the "rival" character with a hearing aid. Walter said "Because it rhymes with "charade". For me, there's just no better lyrics in popular music than Steely Dan lyrics.
Indeed and it brought Come Together to mind for those reasons.
Like Glamour Profession, I find My Rival brilliant and incredibly addictive. Likewise, both records are sharply observed personal narratives of reprehensible behavior.
"I struck a match across the door of Anthony's Bar and Grill.
I was the whining stranger, a fool in love with time to kill".
Classic Steely! And both put a smile on my face, every time. This is some fine, fine music.
Thanks for sharing, guys. Always a pleasure.
SD is the most original band ever. Humor, snark, sinister mystery behind every esoteric lyric. Sooo flippin' groovy and subversive. I feel like my IQ increases when I do a deep dive. Never gets old!!!
Great reactions gentlemen. Did we forget "Third World Man" on this Goucho album ? Great tune!
That one is coming soon
Seasoned SD listeners have sophisticated taste, what can I say? 😎
Steve Khan on guitar, Steve Gadd on drums, Michael Brecker on tenor, Donald on organ and synth.
Steve K is a SENSATIONAL guitarist.
I'd love for these guys to react to his Blue Man album.
One of the few songs Fagen takes a lead organ part. And it’s damn tasty!
Hidden gem, True Companion.
I've always said that My Rival is the greatest example of quality audio recording and arranging ever made. Each instrument is clearly present.
You know your listening to Steel Dan, when suddenly, you look down, and notice some damn part of your body is moving...then suddenly realize, your head had been bobbing , since the 3rd chord! Smooth like you two! ✌️😁
I've been loving Gaucho and Aja (albums) for a million years! Great road music. SD is simply intoxicating!
This song is like a random jam session of sampling instruments. Amazing to the ears.
That was Valerie Simpson, along with Zachary Sanders, doing the backup vocals on “My Rival”. While Valerie wasn’t one of the “Babylon Sisters” singing backup on the other tracks, those vocals were provided by Patti Austin, Diva Gray, Lani Groves, Lesley Miller, and Toni Wine.
I love your reactions. I am almost 70 & remember my initiation to SD. Complex is a good description for their music. ✌️😉
Every Steely Dan song is interesting, even if its not my favorite Dan tune. My Rival is one of those, but its still funky as heck.
I was looking at your SD playlist and you guys still have a lot to explore! Can't wait to hear you react to the whole Countdown to Ecstacy album, as well as Katy Lied. They are both gems 💎 that need to be savored!
The Dan is your favorite bands' favorite band...
The instrumental break on My Rival is ridiculous.
This is funky as hell!!!!
The Gaucho album made use of an early drum machine that the Dan called Wendel which is listed on the album credits.🖖🏼
You are correct in that the music is complex and sometimes the listener needs to hear the music selection a series of times before grasping the power of the vibe. Also, closing one's eyes during such music helps wonders.
It’s about time, I was having withdrawal from my Dan fix! Where we goin after Gaucho? The cover art is a couple dancing the tango, the national dance of Argentina. This is in keeping with “Gaucho,” a cowboy from the pampas (grasslands) region of Argentina.
Thank you for reviewing this delightfully playful song with great, comedic lyrics. Today's modern music bores me with its simplicity. Definitely yearning for the '70s when music was exciting.
So excited for you to get to Everything Must Go. That album might be my favorite Steely Dan album. Although, that tends to change depending on the day 😂
Two Against Nature is pretty great, too
YOU GUY'S HAVE THE BEST SOUND
Always a pleasure amigos. Steely Dan, just so damn good. ⭐️🔥
Listening to Gaucho with headphones on is fine for the left and right sound effects but this album, and My Rival in particular, sounds incredible in 5.1 DTS Surround Sound. Especially when you have two well-placed subwoofers! This album needs to be FELT as well as heard. I live in the S.F. Bay Area so my rooms are prepared for earthquakes and Gaucho! LOL😃😃
TWO subwoofers. And NO neighbours.
A brilliant album, but then again they all are in their own unique ways. These lyrics, just amazing. Thanks again guys. ✌️
I'm relatively new to the channel, but you guys have been so much fun to watch reacting to music that is so deeply ingrained in me. Steely Dan defies explanation. Thier music is some of the most iconic, sophisticated and beautiful soundscapes to come from that time so long ago. Their later albums, specifically Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go are absolutely essential for you to react to......their every bit as enthralling as their early output. Thanks again!
I just accepted at 17 years old, this was music I loved. Remember vividly buying this record on it's 1980 release.
Still remember every twist and turn of the music, and lyric, today!
Can't remember what I went into the kitchen for, though!🤪😂
I appreciate your excellent insight into modern music. I always listen to your reactions. Always on point.
Once again I have a Steely Dan eargasm! Lol Catchy tune and Donald never sounded better.
Every now and then I try to imagine Steely Dan music with a different popular singer than Danald Fagen. It's impossible. Yeah, his vocal style, attitude and tone are an acquired taste for some, and obviously he's not "classically trained" as a crooner, but his voice and the music create an absolutely perfect, addictive synergy.
Love this song. I can see the tone cabinet spinning. Love that sound and of course the vocals and back up harmonies. Great stuff guys...
How could you not love it
One of my favorites on this album, the song has a really funky groove. Love it!
After the first Steve Khan guitar solo where other producers would have put that Timbale fill in again they just leave space and then after the second guitar solo in that spot different percussion sound and partial Timbale fill. Love it.
This is one of continuous favorites from SD. I love the timbale fill and other percussion in this song. I love the unique use of the organ. I'm ever amazed at the number of guitars in this song and yet all the white space where all that funk resides.
Hey guys I remember the day this album was released and every bit of it made absolute sense. Guess you had to be there.
The guitar is so tasty in this
Each album is more mature than the previous one. You can hear the progression.
I think you forgot I Got the News off Aja, unless I missed it. You’d love it, and it has Michael McD. And you loved Royal Scam. Look for Here at the Western World, recorded then and cut. Shows up as an extra on Citizen Dan
They did do it, search for it!
ua-cam.com/video/uaqNPsPAYGA/v-deo.html&feature=share
@@kualua6612 thank you, I’d been searching and either missed it or it didn’t come up.
You’re welcome. If you go to their channel then click playlist you can view all of their SD reviews easily.
Welcome to the many faces of Dandom...
Me (watching you guys): 😒 Wonder if they'll like it? 🍿🍿🍿 😁 You can "think about it" 🤗 or get it smoke on & Dance🍿🍿🍿🍿☺️ They definitely different 🍿Lots of fun. Fun one indeed! 🥰🐰
I REALLY ENJOYED MY RIVAL REACTION I'M BIG STEELY DAN FAN AND I REQUESTED MY RIVAL APPRECIATE IT COULD YOU REACT TO YOU'RE THE ONLY WOMAN BY AMBROSIA THIS A VERY SMOOTH SONG WITH EXCELLENT VOCALS RIGHT ON TO BOTH YOU BROTHERS
Your right when saying that a chord or cadence doesn't work there but it fits the song. It's like 2 Professor's Beck and Fegan writing a paper.
I love your reactions so much. You should check out Steely Dan’s song “The Second Arrangement”. It was recorded for the Gaucho album, but an engineer accidentally erased it after it had been completed. A few bootlegs exist on UA-cam that are not the completed version, but you can hear what it could have been.
@@TheCornishCockney There’s a great interview on UA-cam of Donald & Walter promoting Gaucho on Robert Klein’s radio show in 1980, and Robert asks, “Is it true an engineer erased some important tracks?”, and Walter says, “Not an engineer, not anymore. A busboy erased our tapes”. Lol
The show me my rival part is so mo town lol
I think you guys will really enjoy the albums Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go. Ofc you might listen to the earlier Dan albums like Katy Lied, Pretzel Logic, and Countdown to Ecstasy before listening to their later stuff, but you are going to love those last two albums. It’s not for everyone’s ears, I’ll say that, but you guys have a liking for complex, crunchy chords and ridiculous grooves, and that’s what you’re going to get with their 2000 and 2003 albums. Also, you can’t to wrong with any of Fagen’s solo work- he has 4 solo albums (with a lot of input from Walter Beckar) and just like Steely Dan, each Fagen album has an entirely different feel from the other albums. You guys still have a lot of satisfying discovery ahead of yourselves and I can’t wait to see y’all enjoy it! :)
I always thought 3:20 sounded like the music behind "That Girl" from Stevie Wonder, but this actually pre-dates that! Maybe this section inspired that songs melody
My ex had this album. It's so good , i stole it when we seperated. Hope you get around to Third World Man.
An ex of mine put this album on, sparked one, then ended the relationship. I thought…nice try - I’m still tight with the Dan.
The whole " The Nightfly" CD is amazing. He made 3 more solo projects "Kamakiriad", "Morph the cat" and "Sunken condos".
Gaucho is definitely more of a Donald Fagen album, as his partner, Walter Becker, was largely absent for most if not all of it. My Rival is, well, funky and sublime at the same time. The horns, the guitars. So great. And the lyrics... "Sure, he's a Jolly Roger, until he answers for his crimes." Lol. He could've written that about Donald Trump.
Have you heard or tried any Micheal Franks? He's kinda in between genres like Steely Dan. I don't mean sounds like them, more like hard to pin down the style (through he definitely leans a little more to jazz).
He's put out a good handful of albums so there's a good bit to enjoy. Well worth looking into.
This is film noir, Dan style.
I love Steely Dan and Donald Fagan and can't believe I have just discovered you this week! It looks like you have listened to a lot of their music, but can I recommend "Haitian Divorce" from the Royal Scam album and also the entire Morph the Cat album. Looks like you haven't got around to that one yet.
We did the whole Royal Scam album. Check out our Steely Dan playlist.
...slow cruise, top down. :)
By now it should be clear to you: nobody does complex AND catchy like the Dan
You guys gotta get razor boy by steely dan
DONALDS RIVAL IS A NEW BABY I RECALL WHEN I FIRST FELT THE TINY HANDS HE SAYS,BABY IS TAKING AWAY HIS TIME WITH HIS LADY,THE MILK TRUCK BACKED INTO MY SPACE GET IT.
Kinda reminds me of the future of jazz/blues/pop
Would be tough to be in a SD cover band!
Something about Gaucho & The Night Fly give me a Humphrey Bogart vibe on certain songs!
The horn arrangements are rather orchestral in nature from back in the day of B&W movies.
@@Ibanezed210 Mel Tormé covered “Walk Between The Raindrops” from “The Nightfly” album. The song “The Goodbye Look” lyrics read like a Bogart type movie.
@@davethewave62 "The Goodbye Look" always makes me think of The Godfather II.
Pull the trigger guys...next go to Pretzel Logic, an earlier album, especially the song Pretzel Logic...bluesy as hell!
Please react to 3rd World Man off the Gaucho album...
Please be patient; your request is the next taxi off the rank.
I love it too - they've done the whole :LP in track order George.
We’ve had 40 years to listen to the complexities 😏
It’s called “a groove”
Such fucking ear candy.
Doesn't sound much like a Dan tune except for the key chords and Fagans vocal. Oh and the backing vocals hitting it hard and the horns keeping time with the drum beat like a metronome. And the visual image painted by the lyrics is as good as Black Cow. Don't forget the KILLER guitar licks. It's Dan 💯
do ms marlene off sunken condos, off donalds solo album . thats the best one
Speaking of different, Fire in the Hole is next. Outstanding and different. My favorite on Can't Buy a Thrill
Steely Dan fans dissect music just like you do. I bet most of us have musical backgrounds of some kind.
Throwing you guys a curve ball but you need to listen to a group called "Mothers Finest" 1) Burning Love, 2) Baby Love, 3) Thank you For the Love 4) Thruth'll Set you Free. You'll thank me later just listen to 1 of them if you like it dive in. She sounds like Tina Turner, but they are "FUNKY"
You might consider reacting to the Cars.
Guitar solo gotta be same player from Glamour
I like this one more now actually that beat is hard
He has a newborn, and hes competing for affection.
Can you recommend some over the ear headphones(anyone)?
If you're on the guitar the notes that'll work .. play the notes in an E 4 major scale 4 #s . You can do it ...Jane. it's at a slow pace . Where's there a beat missing. I missed it. Jane
I love Nightfly album. Jane
🤗 This so serious "Yacht Rock yo!" 🤭 And a other song where the audience know only the Chorus Part! 😉 Like EW+W September. We all know "Do you remember the 21st Night of Sept?" 😂 Then you don't hear audience again until the "Ba Di Da"s. I miss them & Chicago Atlantic City Jams. And group I use to see in AC instead of at Radio City or the Beacon was Kool & The Gang! Way cheaper Tickets. Even with AC roundtrip to The Casinos from Port Authority! 🥰🐰
This is such an "unusual" song. I like it a lot but I'm thinking it may be an "acquired taste" for some especially if you are not familiar with Steely Dan. I do not recall ever hearing this track played on the radio. This song is a bit of a "sleeper" in my opinion.
Paints a great picture of sounds n lyric doesn’t it?
..this isn't that complex, it's in E basically ... or stay on on the black keys most of the time . The Rhythmn repeats repeats ...not bad. Put your ear phones on .if you know piano at all follow along ... Jane LPiepes
I always thought this was a song about a guy getting a girl pregnant and now the girl doesn’t give him any attention anymore so he devises a plot to kill the baby so he won’t have competition anymore. But who knows.
Casual SD fans don’t much know this tune. Everything they did is accessible. This thought - like so much on this album - is unexpected. Would you really call it pop music? Or rock? Cracks me up cuz they were releasing this as new wave music hit.
Funk
Interesting comment about this album sounding different than Aja. For some , the album is too clean and precise, maybe it is the introduction of the drum machine/Wendel that contributes. Probably my least fav on this album, but still quality work by the dan.
That's pretty much my take on Gaucho and this song in particular. Lot of great tunes, esp the title track, Glamour Profession, but the album is a little colder, almost too clean and precise, and I think that's due to the drum machine. Aja had a warmer jazzier feel. I also got a bit burned out on hearing 19, Babylon, and Time Out of Mind so often in their tours over the last decade or so (I've seen them about 20 times). But, those are petty bickerings looking at the bigger picture.
Interesting song, not my favorite but still a good offering
You guys really love your Steely Dan. Could never stand them myself.
Emotional damage!!
What A Shame About Me Gerald; I'll bite - "But what is it exactly turns you off?"
@@briangray00
Its either the incredible jazzy funky rock pop musicianship, the fascinating satirical and witty literate lyrics, the amazing variety of talented musicians, including the jazzy horns, or Fagen's smooth yet acerbic vocal delivery backed by the gorgeous complimentery female harmonies.
why bother to comment?
The rhythmn is consistent .
...to me not like Nightfly ...skip the chords and play along on individual notes. Jane
Your tiny hands...
