Thanks for a very nice video. I’m on the border of buying the 100-500. You convinced me that for sitting birds it is a nice lens. I wonder how good it is for birds in flight.
Phenomenal Jan, I bought the 100-500 after watching a bunch of reviews including yours and I agree with you. My biggest takeaway though was your comment of shooting 4000 shots. I’ve been too lazy to do that but you’ve inspired!!! Also I’m working on real camera profiles since Adobe doesn’t have one, still in process. When I come up with the right recipe I’d love to have you try it. I’ve been designing cameras for 25 years and can’t stomach inaccurate colors so I’m on a quest…
Great demonstration of TCs. I ordered the 1.4X and problably I will try the 2X later. Love those birds from down under. I might visit just for the birds. Luckily I am not a tennis player.
one uestion, do you think could be a good lens for landscpaes and seascapes with big waves even in low light? or a 70-200 f2.8 coul be better. best regrads Jose
Great and informative video, with some amazing photos. Very happy to see that this combination is working this well, because i will buy the same combo. Thanks again for once again sharing your experience with us. Greetings from a Norwegian in Brazil
Now you're tempting me to consider a 2.0 teleconverter for my RF100-500. I agree it's a hugely versatile lens with great sharpness and focus speed and accuracy
Double thumbs up. I'm going to have to check out the master class, because I've got this combo (without the extenders) and I'm losing way too much clarity and sharpness upon noise reduction. (Probably because I'm using Lightroom's noise reduction rather than an AI reduction.) Either way, absolutely gorgeous shots! At first glance, I'd have no idea they were in such low light.
Great video and well timed. My RF100-500 has been backordered for a few months and looking forward to its arrival. Thank you for explaining the higher fstop results - my concern.
@@jacobgarvelink2441 Sorry I've only ordered it, through Australian retailer "Camera House" along with the canon r3. They are both on back order / pre-order. I don't expect either of them to arrive until next year at this stage. I am without a camera and going quite insane.
I have finally got my 100-500 this week after a long wait. One thing I noticed with the mirrorless cameras is that it cannot autofocus in very low lighting and the ISO matters in terms of the AF performance. It seems like the AF system looks at a digital version of the scene (after the ISO gain has been applied) and uses that for AF. In a very dimly lit scene, until you increase the ISO it just won't autofocus and will keep searching. In my old set up with the DSLR obviously the AF had nothing to do with what ISO you have set. Would you agree with this? It's not a problem since you would eventually like to have the ISO high to get a decent shot, but it's just something I have to remind myself since I have only recently started using the mirrorless. Until I increase the ISO enough to make the scene in my evf bright enough, the AF wouldn't work. It seemed like this is even more true with the 100-500 compared to my 100-400 on the same camera, but I might be wrong since it should be a camera thing independent of the lens (unless I got a faulty lens!).
The AF system is different. I never tested it like that, since I usually have my exposure set correctly. There are many different factors that can influence AF performance.
Yes, it's not that important a factor from the practical standpoint, but I was surprised to notice this since on a DSLR the AF has nothing to do with ISO. I don't understand the AF system of mirrorless well enough to tell why this may happen, and I couldn't find anything on the internet either. But I did quite a bit of testing in controlled environment and figured that it is indeed the case.
I like my rf100-500mm very much ,I use it with R6 and R10. I also use it more than my ef 400mm DO ll +1,4lll extender combo with adapter ,it is so much lighter and more flexible ,and equal picture quality. Now when winter and dark days are coming I am getting 1,4 rf extender ,so I can use 100-500mm more with R6 which is so much better on high iso values.
i am interested in the same combo. does it provide enough reach, even for tiny birds? do you still need to crop all your images? how about the background blur at 700mm f/10?
Great video great kit buddy, love the fact we use the same kit as watching your videos help me get the best from it all! 😉👍🏼👌Great pics and video and well presented as always..Enjoying your masterclass by the way too.... all the best JP
Jan, is that kinda bird reservation where you made this video or is that population density normal, if you’re living close to however-that-kind-of-bush-and-forest-land-is-called and walk a few metres from the street into the wilderness? That’s awesome,
Jan…. Quick question. Your opinion on my next lens. I have an eosR and like to do natureAnd some portraits. For my next lens I’m looking for either 70-200 f2.8 or better reach 100-500 variable and there is nothing else in between. Is the reach of one outweighs the aperture of the other. The price is close but I don’t know. Maybe you can do a comparison with cons and pros. I can not purchase both Thanks
I need to learn that I can take great videos with my r6. Sure photos are amazing but I tend to forget that video recording is a thing. We dont have that many birds here but lots of deer, hares and foxes. Would be great to capture those on video.
I wonder what the performance will be like with the Canon R7 when sit comes out. Years ago I had the 7D Mk II and the 100-400mm Mk II lens. Also had the Sigma 150-600mm C lens which was also very good. That lens was just crazy sharp. I have micro 4/3 gear now, lighter and easier to get around. Full frame bodies are just way to pricey for me.
@@OpenFilmmaker I have the Panasonic G9 bought used and the Olympus E-M1x (after the price drop). The Panasonic/Leica 100-400mm & the Panasonic/Leica 12-60mm
Sigma 150-600 razor sharp? I never saw it in real life, but the images and comparisons i saw, literally most of the competition was sharper. Thats (and the AF-C breathing on mirrorless) held me back from buying the sigma 150-600. With TC the sharpness and CA gets even worse. I really wanted to avoid RF glass, but the RF 800 F11 was (for me) just a much better and more affordable choice. Also, i just upgraded a year ago to full frame because they got affordable (for a hobby photographer). My EOS RP costed 900€. Its just the RF glasses which are typically expensive (but at least very good IQ)

Good video Jan, but i have a suggestion. Since the R5 uses a dual-gain based sensor you can easily underexpose your shots by for example dropping ISO 16000 to ISO 8000 and then pulling those shots back up to a 'normal' exposure back in post. This will have no real negative effect on your image quality, the sensor handles it very well on the R5. This offers you the ability to for example shoot dark scenes with low iso at high shutter speeds and still get great shots or to shoot bright scenes underexposed by say two-three stops and then pulling them back in post, all this without any sacrifices to image quality. Try it out! :)
in saying that, the images are already a bit underexposed I suppose. But doing it more has degraded image quality when I tried

@@jan_wegener really, you get more nose in doing so ? that's strange. It should not happen if you're shooting with the R5. I shot a Halloween event in the dark recently using the 100-500 and to avoid getting a lot of noise i dropped the iso to half of what it would normally would have been. Results looked clean and great after post processing and pulling those exposures back up to normal. Perhaps it's related to DxO PhotoLab which i'm using and if you are using with Lightroom then that could cause a problem or two especially with noise which is one of it's weaker sides.
wow what a video thanks jan. got my 100-500 a month a go and I am so happy with the results with the R5 soon I will get the extender one of the two still wandering which is best for me. again thanks
Great video Jan! I have this combo and it works great with close subjects but when the bird is small inside a forest a bit far away and I just want a clear shot of for ID purposes, I find that it doesn't focus even with spot AF on the bird. What could be the issue? Am I just asking too much?
Great video Jan thanks fro sharing. I have the R5 with the 100-500 and have been considering getting either a 400 f2.8 or 600 f4. Having watched your video I am now wondering if I should just get a 1.4x and 2x to go with the 100-500 instead. Fully understand I am not going to get the low light or maybe the same sharpness, but the big question for me is will I get those great soft backgrounds? Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers Keith
Your video shows that you can get very decent results using teleconverters and that low light is not a real problem anymore. At the other hand you say that you prefer to use the 100-500mm without converters...My question is: in what situation would you use a teleconverter? I have the R6 and the 100-500 mm and I think I could use a teleconverter in moments I can't come close enough to the birds to fill a reasonable part of the frame to prevent that I have to crop too much (and left with few megapixels). Am I right about that?
Yes I use the teleconverters when I am "just" too far away and a TC would give me a nice composition and image. I don't like the use them when the subject is still too far away even with the extenders, cause then IQ suffers a lot.
Wieder Wunderbar mein Freund !! Really liked the fact that this time you were walking around, pretty much in a similar context to how I'm usually shooting. A bit more improvised shooting whichever birds cross my path, even when doing some research which birds can be found on the specific location that time of the year. I do admire your "outdoor wildlife studio" approach and what you can achieve like that, but I just can't afford the time do so. Anyway, truly amazing you found an owl within the first 15 minutes !!! These results make me wonder again whether these circumstances would not prefer getting an 2x between my R6 and 100-400Lii as opposed to the 800/11 which would need to remain in the backpack during the rain. Better a not so perfect photo than no photo at all. Anyway, first I still need to learn a lot getting the most out my new R6 and the 1.4x. When I could dream aloud, Canon should make like a weather sealed RF400-800/F10 for about 2000Eur, not heavier than your 100-500 and keeping full zoom range with extenders 😀
@@jan_wegener T-shirt ? haha, not dry enough for the 800 and too cold for me. This week I shall fit in a drive to Germany: my RF24-105L4 has arrived, so I will trade in the 70D and Tamron 16-300 to complete my transition to mirrorless. Before seeing videos from you and Duade, I long feared I would dislike the EVF compared to the OVF experience. But to my surprise I didn't feel like picking up the 70D for 1 second since getting the R6 😀 I only regret losing reach, but this being my first FF camera I couldn't imagine upfront the bokeh advantage. Thank you for convincing me this was the way to go (within my budget limitations) !!
@@jan_wegener Indeed, as are eye-AF, low light, ibis, buffer size, .. But before R5 & R6, all EVF's I saw were so low-res and with so much lag that I couldn't imagine ever wanting to abandon OVF for tracking birds in flight ! Whatever extra features the EVF had, if it couldn't allow me to follow a flying bird it would have remained a no go for me! You made an earlier switch from 5D to R5 .. how much confidence did you have back then about this jump in the unknown regarding whether the EVF was enough real-time compared to OVF ??
Hi Jan! Iwe had this lens now for about a months, im really pleased, tho id wish it was abit sharper, so I have started looking into getting a used 500 or 600 prime ef.. witch one would you say is the sharpest out of the 6 that exists? :)
Question for Jan... how much of the image quality is coming from the 48 megapixel camera? Considering an R3 or R1 right now. Would the output be significantly different or only if i really zoom in during edit as you were in this or if i crop in a lot then go to print? Thanks Jan this is really good :)
Literally just bought this lens with the R6 mark ii after watching this video. I wanted the higher megapixel R5 (had the 5D mark iii) but figured I’d wait for the R5 mark ii. R6 mark ii looks pretty damn capable. I’ll be photographing and filming in the Masai mara and Serengeti, and my first trip will be to see the gorillas in Rwanda. Also got the 2x extender 😮😮😮
Hi Jan! This is an interesting and very informative video!! I totally agree about thecombination of the R5 and the 100-500. Question: In a former video you advised not to use extenders on zoom lenses? Have you come to another conclusion now? I am thinking about buying either the 1.4 or the 2.0 extender - maybe both: Which one should be first? Again, thanks for this video! Kind Regards, Jan, DK
It's an interesting question, my general view hasn't changed and even on the 100-500 I would prefer not to use extenders, but it seems like the lens can handle them well enough, which makes them a viable option. The main drawback is that you can't zoom back fully. so with the 2x it's a 600-1000mm lens. I think it depends what you want to achieve with the extenders. Generally speaking a 1.4x is always slightly better than a 2x
Great video mate, that Owl is incredible, what a bonus. Happy you had a good session with the YTBC as well. Cheers, Duade

Great owl shot. If you have opportunity to have only one lens in your bag, what lens is it be?
probably 100-500 and extenders
@@jan_wegener Thanks, I ordered this lens for me in Russia, with Topaz Denoise - I think it is very good combination.
Amazing video and really great shots. Going to have to look at your editing techniques since I'm somewhat a newbie. Thank you for sharing your content.
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for a very nice video. I’m on the border of buying the 100-500. You convinced me that for sitting birds it is a nice lens. I wonder how good it is for birds in flight.
Just as good if you’re close
Great video again. Very useful.
Glad you think so!
I am so torn about which of these lenses to get. There is the Canon 200-800, Sigma 60-600, and the RF 100-500.
I’ve been designing cameras for 25 years and can’t stomach inaccurate colors so I’m on a quest…
nice, I have been making some mixed profiles that work really well :)
Great demonstration of TCs. I ordered the 1.4X and problably I will try the 2X later. Love those birds from down under. I might visit just for the birds. Luckily I am not a tennis player.
haha! Awesome
Such amazing and entertaining birds and amazing footage!
Glad you enjoyed it!
one uestion, do you think could be a good lens for landscpaes and seascapes with big waves even in low light?
or a 70-200 f2.8 coul be better.

Great and informative video, with some amazing photos. Very happy to see that this combination is working this well, because i will buy the same combo. Thanks again for once again sharing your experience with us. Greetings from a Norwegian in Brazil
Great to hear!
Very good combo indeed !
yep!
Now you're tempting me to consider a 2.0 teleconverter for my RF100-500. I agree it's a hugely versatile lens with great sharpness and focus speed and accuracy
It works fine, but also don't expect the impossible :)
An excellent video as always, I use the same combination and totally agree with you on low light results ..
Great to hear!
Excellent video as always, very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice vídeo! Thanks a lot!
Great. Yes, LR is much inferior when it comes to NR than Pure RAW which I use
Great work--appreciate all the information that you have provided!!! Only down side is--it's costing me a bundle in new Canon RF equipment!!!!
haha! It's costing me a lot as well!
Great video and well timed. My RF100-500 has been backordered for a few months and looking forward to its arrival. Thank you for explaining the higher fstop results - my concern.
Glad it was helpful! Hope you get your lens, soon!
I’ve ordered the r3 and the 100-500 but was hesitant to get a tele converter… I think you have convinced me !
Very curious where (and when!) you ordered the lens. They seems to be sold out all over the place 🤨
@@jacobgarvelink2441 Sorry I've only ordered it, through Australian retailer "Camera House" along with the canon r3. They are both on back order / pre-order. I don't expect either of them to arrive until next year at this stage. I am without a camera and going quite insane.
Sunstudios in Melbourne always had the odd one over last few months. They night even cut you a nice deal if you mention my name :)
I was doing really well at resisting buying this lens until now! Superb shots!
haha, sorry about that :D

Great video. I got the R5+100-500 and the 1,4 extender and it works very Good.
Great to hear!
i am interested in the same combo. does it provide enough reach, even for tiny birds? do you still need to crop all your images? how about the background blur at 700mm f/10?
One word.. Awesome 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Great video great kit buddy, love the fact we use the same kit as watching your videos help me get the best from it all! 😉👍🏼👌Great pics and video and well presented as always..Enjoying your masterclass by the way too.... all the best JP

H Jan, what % of all images taken were usable?
Jan, is that kinda bird reservation where you made this video or is that population density normal, if you’re living close to however-that-kind-of-bush-and-forest-land-is-called and walk a few metres from the street into the wilderness? That’s awesome,
That was a small reserve
Great photos
Thank you! Cheers!
@jan, is it helpful in football tournament at night under flood light? Plz respond. I m confused.
Wouldn’t be the best lens for that
Tanks for this interesting video. I start to think about buying the RF 100-500 and sell the 100-400...
That extra 100mm is quite nice :)
I need to learn that I can take great videos with my r6. Sure photos are amazing but I tend to forget that video recording is a thing. We dont have that many birds here but lots of deer, hares and foxes. Would be great to capture those on video.
R6 takes great video
I wonder what the performance will be like with the Canon R7 when sit comes out. Years ago I had the 7D Mk II and the 100-400mm Mk II lens. Also had the Sigma 150-600mm C lens which was also very good. That lens was just crazy sharp. I have micro 4/3 gear now, lighter and easier to get around. Full frame bodies are just way to pricey for me.
What camera + lens do you use for M43?
Hi Jan great review l have the R7 with the 100-500 at the moment l am going to get the R5 mark ii but l am bit worried about the reach with R5 and the 100 - 500 as l do birds do you think it will ok as it’s got 45 mp and maybe 1x4 extender thanks Keith
Try it out! :)
I have tried this and it doesn't work for me. The darker image has definitely more noise than a properly exposed higher ISO one
in saying that, the images are already a bit underexposed I suppose.
@ Yes, if you run Deep prime, it will denoise heavily.
wow what a video thanks jan. got my 100-500 a month a go and I am so happy with the results with the R5 soon I will get the extender one of the two still wandering which is best for me. again thanks
Thank you :)
Hello Jan and thanks for all the videos you support us with.
Where did you purchase the camoflage cover for the Rf 100-500?
I don't have one on mine, but I usually use lenscoat for all my lenses
Great video Jan.
The results are surprisingly stunning.
I guess you are using the RF extenders, right?
Yes, only those will work
Great video Jan! I have this combo and it works great with close subjects but when the bird is small inside a forest a bit far away and I just want a clear shot of for ID purposes, I find that it doesn't focus even with spot AF on the bird. What could be the issue? Am I just asking too much?
Probably
I am a very proud 100-400 user, so yeah, I want the 100-500.
Question:Do i need to place a UV 55mm filter for lens protection,as practice before many years ago?
I would never use an UV filter
@@jan_wegener Tnx.whats your advise?
Great work. I never have the nerve to put a 2x on my 100-500 because of lesser image quality. I am fine with 1.4x. Your editing technique is great.
Yes, it's not the sharpest, but you can make it work sometimes
@@jan_wegener so when you have the 2x on you cant zoom ou5 at all? You are stuck at 500mm?
@@wcsdiaries 600-1000mm
Great video Jan thanks fro sharing. I have the R5 with the 100-500 and have been considering getting either a 400 f2.8 or 600 f4. Having watched your video I am now wondering if I should just get a 1.4x and 2x to go with the 100-500 instead. Fully understand I am not going to get the low light or maybe the same sharpness, but the big question for me is will I get those great soft backgrounds? Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers Keith
An extender will give you more reach, but not the look those other two lenses can give you with much smoother BGs
Hi:) Do you use lens coat for Canon 100-500? If yes, what kind do you recommend?
Like you I just love this lens!!!
Do 2x extenders on the 100-500mm function through the entire range orr does it have limitations?
from 300mm onwards with extenders on the 100-500 ,so 600-1000
Your video shows that you can get very decent results using teleconverters and that low light is not a real problem anymore.
Danke!
Yeah that owl was a crazy surprise!
That could be a nice lens!
You could probably wrap you t-shirt around the 800 in the rain
@@WernerBirdNature nice!
Exactly, the EVF is probably something I would not want to give up anymore.
@@WernerBirdNature I thought it would be weird, but I didn't really notice the EVF at all. Felt at home right away
Awesome! The R6 II will be great
@@jan_wegener amazing, I can’t wait! Would you have gotten the 1.4 extender or is the 2x also a good fit?
Hi Jan, which meetering method did you use? Spot or evaluative?
Full manual so it doesn’t matter
