Thanks for the information on the oak leaf gall mites. We received our first bites on August 14. We’re trying to avoid the great outdoors, but new bites continue to appear and the itching is enough to wake us up at night. We don’t have oaks in our yard, but we do have plenty of deciduous trees and shrubs, and we had plenty of periodical cicadas earlier this season. The cicada singing peaked on June 7 at about 90 decibels, which was nearly 10 weeks before the itchy mite bites. #BroodXIII
Yes! Magnolia scale has been abundant this year and I've seen some of the worst infestations I've ever witnessed! I'm in the South Chicagoland area. Our record spring rainfall has also seemed to create an abundance of root rot diseases and bur oak blight. Apple scab, rusts, and hawthorn blight have all popped off as well. I've done so many circling root remediation treatments, I can say confidently that planting too deep seems to be a death sentence for many species of otherwise very healthy trees. Make sure your landscaper excavated the root ball before planting and exposes the root flare, or do it yourself! Don't be scared to prune out circling roots at planting time, and if you bought a tree in a traditional plastic container then shave the entire exterior of the root ball. Some very good studies have shown upwards of 80 percent circling root reduction when the root ball was shaved. Or, avoid most of the mess and buy a tree grown in a root bag! I've never seen better healthier root systems then when I plant a 15 or 25 gallon root pouch grown tree. Love Friday's when I get to listen to this program while making treatments.
Strange year in my garden in WI. Very few Japanese beetles. I think aphids are attacking Brussels under netting. I think gypsy moths were brought in with arborist chips as they were on apples near chips. The worst was too much rain and stunted tomatoes and early blight. We are at 36” of rain to date and think avg annual is 37”. Not a good year for heavy mulch or planting close together. Today we will be cool-71*! I don’t miss the jungle atmosphere at all. Ugh, those Gall mites sound awful! We had to cover head to toe most of the summer because of mosquitoes and that was enough-worst ever. I have mostly all oaks as they grow like weeds and trying to get other varieties growing.
I planted sunflowers 4 times and the bunnies loved them 4 times- 😉 No sunflowers this year! no dill, parsley, basil, lemon verbena, etc. Bunnies are having a grand time here in northern Illinois
This was my first year flower farming and it has been so disappointing! Last year I had flowers galore and I was not farming flowers. I cant understand what is going on. My water bill has been high. It has been so frustrating. I'm fertilizing. So many of my seeds didn't take off
Thanks, guys!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!

Good to hear about magnolia scale up north. I just saw Morton Arboretum also included them in their bi-weekly newsletter.
Thanks for listening!
