    Technical notes:
    This video was filmed on a Sony RX100 Mk2 Cybershot camera. Audio recorded using two Zoom H1's and the video was edited using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 on a Windows 7 Dell PC (Intel i7 and USB 3.0 for a faster workflow). Sound was played live through a Roland KC-350 Stereo Mixing Keyboard amplifier.
    Q&A:
    Erasing a Phrase
    Q: Can anyone tell me how to erase a loop from the phrase recorder? I've tried every possible key combination and nothing seems to work. I'd appreciate if someone could tell me how! Thank you!
    A: Yes there is a way. You need to change the number of bars of the phrase to a different number and then change it back right away, and then the phrase will be cleared. So if I currently have a four bar phrase, change it to a three bar phrase, and then change it right back to a four bar phrase, it will now be erased. I wish this was more clear in the manual :) Hope this makes sense!!

    So, can you record different patches over each other or are you limited in building phrases to only layers of the same patch? Seems awful limited if you can only layer the same patch.

    • @geoffmobile
      @geoffmobile  5 років тому +1

      Hi Dave, as far as I know, everything plays through the current patch. By using the different tones and high pass or low pass / band pass filters, you can make the different pitch ranges "sound" like different instruments (e.g. changing the bass sound without changing the melody sound). But if you want a true loop pedal experience that has different patches, I'd recommend plugging in a loop pedal instead.

      Answering to an old post, but... You push rec and select some other amount of steps than you previously had in your loop. For example if you previously recorded 4 steps, hit 5th step (or any other than 4th) and then push the 4th step again, and you can record new stuff.

    Not being able to overdub with independent effects sucks. I love this synths sounds but that's a huge problem.

    • @geoffmobile
      @geoffmobile  2 роки тому

      Essentially the phrase recorder assists in playing the current tones. But by using different pitch ranges and creative use of low pass / high pass / band pass filters, in combination with the three tones, you can make each range of the keyboard have a different tonality. For example, you can make Tone 1 with a low pass filter and design a nice bass sound. And then use a band pass filter for tone 2 to create a mid range pad or supporting voice. And then use a high pass filter on tone 3 to create harmonics or high range effects. Then create overlapping phrases that make use of the three pitch ranges.

    How do I record a phrase with one patch, then play it back but play different patches over? Like, record a 4 bar sine wave bass line, then pick a different sound like a string sound and just play around with that over the recorded bass line?

    • @geoffmobile
      @geoffmobile  10 років тому

      Hi liamvg, the Phrase recorder doesn't allow you to select a different patch for the recorded phrase. Both the notes from the phrase and the notes you are playing will all go through the current patch. However, if you wanted to make a different sound for the lower notes vs the higher notes, you can set Tone 1 to be your bass sound and apply a low pass filter at a certain point, and set Tone 2 to be your string sound and apply a high pass filter at a certain point, to give a different sound quality for the different tonal ranges.

      Hi bestrickie2, no problem, my pleasure! as far as I know, there is no quantizer in the phrase recorder yet, perhaps Roland will add one in the software update? also I think you can only use a single sound at a time (however you can still layer the three tones, and apply filters to them. e.g. if you are playing in different ranges you can use cutoff filters to have different sounds in different parts of the keyboard, using the three tones). Hope this helps! Geoff

    what's the main difference between this and a jd-xi? what should I buy?

    • @geoffmobile
      @geoffmobile  5 років тому

      main difference to me is that the jd-xi has "mini keys" which means they keyboard has much smaller keys (in width of each key) than on a piano or full sized keyboard. As a pianist, I would find the mini keys frustrating to play. i believe both instruments allow enough creativity to make interesting music. Haven't used the jd-xi before but I have seen some demo videos and it looks cool. The Gaia is a great instrument too, with really endless possibilities.

    Hi Geoff, thanks for the video. I am starting to get this down, but there is one thing I am struggling with that I hope you can answer.
    I have saved a phrase and recalled it using the play button. However, I am failing to see how to record a different phrase to say the #2 button, or at least how to recall it. When I select a different number, it seems to change only the patch, not the phrase and continues to play the initial phrase, just with a different patch.
    Does that make sense?
    Thanks!

    • @geoffmobile
      @geoffmobile  9 років тому +1

      Hi Ted, thanks. To select a different phrase I think you need to hold down the record button at the same time you select the phrase number button. Otherwise it will just change the patch.

    • @geoffmobile
      @geoffmobile  8 років тому

      +gbtayc the recorder will always play through the current patch. However, by using different ranges and creative use of high pass / low pass / or band pass filters, you can make each of the three tones active in a certain range of the keyboard, which would give the similar effect to using a separate patch. if this doesn't make sense please let me know :)

    • @geoffmobile
      @geoffmobile  9 років тому

      hi PapaKrusty444, as far as I know, when you play back the recording, it will play back using the current patch you have selected on your Gaia. However, I get around this by recording a bass part with the recorder, and using filters to make the melody seem like a different patch in the higher register (even though it's all through the same patch). Hope this makes sense!

      Hi Ramoses, yes the Phrase recorder in the Gaia is very basic, and the option to erase will erase all the layers for as long as the key is held down. As far as I know there is no way to fix a mistake in the phrase aside from erasing the entire phrase for the portion that the mistake occurred. I think if you find this is a problem, it may be better to get a dedicated looping pedal. The Electro-Harmonix V256 Vocoder looks like a good option, I hadn't heard of it before, but it looks interesting! www.ehx.com/products/v256

      geoffmobile Thanks a lot for the reply! What do you think can help to get better playback and more control to the loops and this kind of things? Also I think the Electro-Harmonix makes the instrument a vocoder, so it can't make any sound… And excelent review dude, thanks a lot

      Thanks a lot Ramoses! I have seen performers on stage using a looping pedal with several pedals to control and create overdubbed loops in a live performance. But I haven't ever used one myself, so can't recommend any particular one. I think it would be best to talk to an expert at a local music store to get some ideas, or do some google searching for "loop pedal" "loop sampler" etc. Yes, from my experience with the vocoder on the Korg MS-2000B, when you turn on the vocoder, the instrument only produces the sound from the vocoder, and no longer from the ordinary synth sounds. The benefit of the Electro-Harmonix is that you can use it with guitars too I think, and it would be a good way to turn the Gaia into a vocoder. However I think some people like pairing the Gaia with a Korg MS2000 (which has a vocoder, but are hard to find), or the more common MicroKorgs. Cheers!! Geoff

      geoffmobile Oh tahnks again. The reason that I need a voocoder is to perform a Daft Punk cover in my school, this is something really different and new so I think would be preety interesting. But for my luck I have 2 keyboards, one Synth and a normal keyboard that its sound sucks, but I think it won't affect the Vocoder sound. The Problem here in Brazil is that the instruments are REALLY expensive… 3 times more expensive, so I need to get money to the Vocoder and see what I can do with the loops because my brother that plays the synth is having problems using the loops of the Gaia.

      Cool! Sounds interesting Ramoses. Good luck with your performance! :) I really like Daft Punk especially their latest album Random Access Memories. Also, is your brother making use of the Recording Standby Mode in the phrase recorder? It's described in the Gaia manual. It lets you pause recording while the loop plays, so you can try out loop ideas before enabling recording again. ps which Daft Punk song are you covering? Cheers, Geoff

    It's a shame Roland overlook this machine. Such a nice sound with such shabby firmware support.

      I agree, it is a fantastic machine, I have been trying to do what I can to promote it, and hopefully Roland will continue producing it if there is enough demand. I would go as far to say that it sets the standard for easy to understand synthesis design. Teachers at Berklee have used it as part of their synthesis curriculum and I think it is the best overall design for starting to learn about synthesis for the beginner. I have a playlist on my channel with a collection of my favorite tutorial videos for the Gaia. Feel free to check it out :)

    But hey, can we play a different tone from the sound bank while something is playing on the phrase instead of changing octaves or editing the same tune for second phrase? When I want to play another instrument from sound bank while a single phrase playing, it also changes the first recorded phrase?

    Can you use a recorded phrase pattern to play another hardware synth over midi?

    Hi! Thank you for this great video. Do you know if I can play a saved phrase from one patch while playing with another patch?
    Best regards
    Johann

      Thank you Johann! To answer your question, the notes recorded in the Phrase recorder will play back using the current patch and tempo that is set on the Gaia at the time you are playing back the phrase. So if you are playing notes yourself, the recorded notes will use the same patch. However, to give the effect of a different patch, you can play with filters to make a certain range of the keyboard have a different quality than the other ranges, and then record your phrase in that range. For example, I could make the bass register sound a certain way by using Patch 1 with a low pass filter, and then make the mid/upper range sound a certain way by using Patch 2 and 3 using bandpass or high pass filters.

      @@geoffmobile thanks! That's might be a good way to get around that. I'll check it out. Thanks again
