- The Mini Cooper 'S' has to be one of the best classic small cars ever made.
The Cooper Car Company has re-launched the original bolt on conversion kits for all types of Mini engines. Sure, you could get Mini Sport to do the conversion for you, but if you want to fit the kit yourself, then here's how I got on with mine...
For more info on the kit visit:

nice video, welcome to the world of the s works.

Nice I have the same 1998 mpi but in BRG. But wow that cost would almost cost what I payed for it ! maybe one day.
Number 22, we are number 23!
Nice work, would you mind mentioning which mini magazine it was, so I can grab a copy and read it. I'm considering doing this job as well, and just want to make sure I'm prepared with all the bits and bobs I might need. Many thanks. I might get an in-line fuel pressure gauge as well to see a before and after.
+Aston Sharman HI, it was the June 2015 issue of Mini Magazine. I'm not sure you can get a paper version, I used the online one (which was a pain). It didn't have everything I needed to know in it, which is part of the reason I made this video. As for a fuel pressure gauge, the rolling road guy put one on for the test. I think it had to be 3bar at idle
+James Quintin Cool, that's great information. Many thanks.
Hi James
Just wondering how the Cooper S Rosettes are attached to the rear panels, are they water transfers?
Hope you can help seeing there are no instructions included in the kit.
Thanks
Hey, they are just stickers (very sticky stickers!) I used some masking tape to make a 'box' around where the laurel should line up, and carefully placed the sticker on (unplealing it from underneath to avoid airbubbles)
something like this ua-cam.com/video/ItodhIEVWT4/v-deo.html
HELLO
What is the pressure for the supplementary pump? Are they 1bar or 2bars?
thanks
It was either 3bar or 3psi... not sure which, sorry!
Hi James, love the vid. I am just tackling this. All good apart from the fuel regulator. Do you have a drawing of how you piped it in? I dont want to put the wrong hose on the wrong bit.
I'm working on the car on Thursday hopefully, so can take a picture for you then
@@jqsgarage That would be really kind. Thank you. I am on the Mini Classic FB group if you want to send via msg
hi, how you resolve the oil filter issue?
No, just left the original style one on there
Great vid! We had a W plate blue small arch Mini Cooper from new in 2000 which I got to drive at 18 and absolutely loved! Would love to find another but has to be blue with small arches and black / cream interior with walnut dash...just like yours! I thought the 3 clock dash only came with the big arch cars? Did you switch yours back to smaller wheels? We had the two spots and small arches in black plastic - loved it!!!
Thanks! It came with just the clock, but all the MPIs have the wiring for the volt and oil temperature guages. You just need a new small loom behind the dash and obviously drill the holes out
@@jqsgarage brill! Love the look of the three dials. The import minis seem like a good move but not bothered about ac and prefer the dial look! Still using the mini ? Year round ?
@@rjdavies1982 currently nearing the end of a 4 year restoration....
@@jqsgarage fantastic! Put out a video if you can! I've been watching some of the pocket rocket garage restoration videos
I do it and dont feel any power extra
brilliant video, love that you show the problems! how does it feel now with the conversion?
Well the car is now off the road getting a full rebuild, but I did do an update video: ua-cam.com/video/rb-B0ciaoUQ/v-deo.html
Would be fun to have a classic mini, but I'd have to put in AC for where I live.
The Japanese spec Minis had factory fitted Aircon... ;)
I own a JDM Spi - and have always wondered how the ECU would cope with the aircon running!
I'm curious - Do you believe the uprated roller rockers will increase wear to other internal components?
I don't see why they would wear more? ECU has nothing to do with the aircon, the alternator would be the thing that needs to cope...
It's got a 2.7 final drive, the original "S" had a 3.44. It's never going to pick up from 30 in 4th.
The Original S was also a 998cc.
@@asambi69 no it wasn't, the Cooper was 997 and 998, and the S came in 970, 1072 and 1275. There's a world of difference between the Cooper 998 and an S.
change the diff, get rid of the 2:7 and fit a 3:2 ratio. No bolt-on kit can overcome
that 3 speed and overdrive
I'm mostly going to be doing Motorway driving in it, so would rather have lower revs at 70 to make it more comfortable :)
@@jqsgarage we don't have motorways over here 😉
typical British mate......cool and patient between two cups of tea/coffee
I think what you have done seems super expensive for so little gain just to put on an S sticker, but if you love your car....you love your car.....I had a 1380 mini back over thirty years ago and with a more aggressive cam and a pair of 1 1/2 inch SU carbs with the usual head work and long centre branch manifold etc, would really go like a missile.......but was never easy to keep cool.
I'd say that cat is probably killing the true figure of 90 hp which is good by any standard seeing as a metro turbo only made about 92 if I remember.
Have you done anything with handling like fitting negative camber arms on the front?
Actually 84hp is a pretty good number. You cannot achieve 90hp with these mods, the cat is not the problem. A single tailpipe muffler could give it a few more hp's. The kit itself is nothing special, it's the fact that this makes your car a real S is what makes this appealing. You can achieve the same performance for a lot less if you want to.
When you start it for the first time put some petrol on the air filter.
any particular reason why?
To start quickly.
To think that you pay so much for the kit and it seems very badly engineered. Nothing goes right. What's wrong with just re- mapping
the MEMS system fitted to the MPI and Spi Mini are fixed and can't be re-mapped. You need to spend a shed load of money to by aftermarket computers.
Tim Neal my opinion would be to just get a really old mini with carbs, that way you can tune the hell out of it
why are all brits weird?
So everybody else in comparison seem....dull👍
Total wanna be. Wrong final.drive for what you're looking for! Do research before you buy stuff you don't actually need
