I'm thankful for the upgrade walkthrough - I was so hesitant to change anything - being a newbee and just starting to get comfortable. In reference to 9:55 "5 things you must do in betaflight etc...." I watched that video and NOW, after this setup vid, I'm going to go back and rewatch that video - to make sure that I didn't screw anything up ;) Thank you JB, your baby boy is beautiful - I'm sorta waiting for him to start flying around your property.....😁
Been flying 4.2 RC1 for about 2 weeks now. First release candidate I have tried. I also did Bi Direction D-shot on BLheli S (did it on 32bit already) for the first time too. Loving it.
BTW when I upgrade to a version that you cannot cut and paste the diff all, I just use my camera to take screen shots of each BF screen. Once I have upgraded i am able to just quickly go and change to the correct uarts, cofig screen, OSD etc. Then I have a brand new set up ready to "tune". (move the sliders a couple spots maybe :)
Having two quads nearly perfectly tuned on 4.1, I'm getting sweaty hands and a feel of pressure here 😄
I feel like.. If you know what you are doing.. It is safe to do... I just paste my pids in, and if something bad happens, I will retune

I have moved a few of my quads to 4.2. My pids and filters are the same on 4.2 as they were for 4.1.6. Not saying that will work for you. But it did for me.
It's not that bad since your perfect PIDS for 4.2 might be close to your perfect PIDs on 4.1. The underlying settings change sometimes, so I'd still start with standard PIDs and then manually set them to where your 4.1 PIDs were. If something is wrong there would be no way to know where the imperfections come from by just dumping a previous config.

i stick to 4.1 since the new way of showing LQ i just dont like............ to many numbers
@@playcss1992 I'm confused, it's pretty much the exact same number of digits unless you're at full LQ strength. Example: 295 vs 2:95.

BF 4.2RC3 flys supper good did my pid tuning as shown by you and uav tech then used the sliders to get to the aprox numbers and it flys soo good its not normal nevver had it flying so good

I do too, but I've flown a similar quad with the 4.2 release candidate and I was blown away how good it was. The previous releases didn't give me that feeling. So, it may be time to bite the bullet.
I an using the same version as you 3.5.7 on my FC (Omnibus F4SD.) Still learning to fly my quad, is a 250 class.
But RPM filtering is sooo good.

For me a super important safety tip is to have every quad run the props the same way (normal or reversed). Otherwise I'm so disorganized I'll forget which one is which and then the quad will flip out.
I have the same quad with the 20x20 stack. I'm about to update from BF4.1.0 (I'm a little behind). 1) How are you getting stick overlay if you have no blackbox logging as noted @8:50? Did you add a serial logger? 2) Are you still running 4kHz PID loop, or did you bump it back up to 8kHz since this video was made? Thanks
I have updated the fimware to 4.2.2 and now it does not arm but the shocking thing is that although in the receiver tab all the channels go well, in the modes tab, it does not respond to the changes of the channels, neither armed, nor mode flight, or beeper.

Took me a while to tune my quads on 4.1.5. And now they fly like a dream. I’m not sure I wanna update and start over. The release notes said you would have to tune again and can’t copy and past any settings.
I have moved a few of my quads to 4.2. My pids and filters are the same on 4.2 as they were for 4.1.6. Not saying that will work for you. But it did for me. Just take note of your settings in 4.1 and manually enter in 4.2, i just used the sliders to get close to what I had in 4.1 like I said it worked for me and may not for you. I did this on a whoop and a 5 in. I did filters then flew. Then I did the pids and it flew like it did on 4.2. I will say the cpu load is WAY improved. I'm 6% on F7 and 12% on F4 with bidirectional, rpm filtering and dynamic rpm.

@@magiccarpet2416 can't say one way or the other. Maybe it sounds cleaner. But, I will say, since 4.1 it has been easy to tune. RPM filtering is the way to go.

Great video Joshua love Ur love help I'm going from betaflight 3.5 want to flash to latest firmware. Can I use some of my config dump the same way you did in this vid with such a major firmware update? It's on a mamba f722s board.
I dont know when you recorded this, but RC3 has beeen out for a while already. I tested RC2 and had a weird issue on mine. Using matek f722se, when arming it whent crazy and flipped out, broke all my props. This was not on the first flight, but just a random occurance, and flew fine after unplugging and replugging the battery. I updated to RC3 but havent had the chance to test it yet to see if it does the same

Actually I flashed 3 times Betaflight 4.2.8, First: STM32F411, Second: MATEKF411, but finally MATEKF411SE and it was the good one !

TBS is still recommending that only racers lock to 150Hz mode. Freestylers should use dynamic mode, per TBS' post in the lounge last week.
just before 5min ... this is really confusing for a newbie who has never done this before ... can or must I do this (CLI thing)? I like to update firmware, but in my IT opinion settings stay the same, watching this video it looks like I have to apply my preference setting again? will personal setting be the same after a firmware update? and if not HOW TO RECOVER? :-)
Hi, Joshua thank you for showing the tuning and I always go through all your great tutorials step by step. Just got a new quad which has a kinda old version (before 4.1) for its controller and I am about to flash it. I got a question here about the version, We have the newest release version betaflight 4.2.5 for this controller right now, shall I pick the newest version which is 4.2.5 or just stay on 4.2? Becasue I was told by this drone's customers service that: "to be cautious not to update your controllers to the newest version which might not stable? " So this is my concerns, I kinda of doubt his statement about this. so which version am I gonna pick up? thanks again!

the pre-weapon doesn't work and this is a can because I'm used to a pre-assembled, oily channel for the right yaw to put together for more safety. and arming a channel I don't see security.
Hey Joshua, rather than going to CLI and typing version to check the target name, why not glance at the top left corner of the screen. I'm sure you knew that but just saying, make it easier for your audience :)
You can safely set your PID loop to 8k on F4 boards on BF 4.2 because the loop stability is greatly improved. This wasn't possible before, but it is now!!
That's not what the 4.2 tuning notes say.
@@JoshuaBardwell Thanks for your answer. I looked it up and you are right. I have been flying with 4.2 for a month now and it worked extremely well. Max. tasks utilization sometimes goes over 100%, which means there was a task that needed more time than was "allocated"/allowed for it. The developers are likely planning on increasing the standard RPM notch Q value now that loop times are nearly perfectly stable. Since I was flying with an RPM notch Q of only 500 (standard of 4.1, where the loop was way more unstable on my f4 at 4k/4k) I think this seldom overshoot is fine, even with RPM filtering enabled on f4 boards with 8k/8k. Maybe you should just not go too high with the Q value of the RPM notches @ 8k/8k on f4 boards. That's probably why it is recommended to try 8k/4k first on f4 boards with RPM filtering enabled.
Would you recommend trying out the Dynamic Notch Filters on stock settings first? I notice the past videos you had a conversation about certain settings with UAV Tech (Mr. Spatz) about defaults. Wanted to know your opinion.

DJI supports many Betaflight OSD elements for a while now.
@@JoshuaBardwell ah okay sorry I misunderstood your comment about it, am curious how that works though is the FC sending digital info over to the air module to then add onto OSD. I just recently started trying to work on a build I eventually want to run iNav on but not sure what I'd do without control of the OSD. If not apparent I still use my analog hdos and transmitters so don't have exposure to DJI digital doodads.

I switched to 4.2 couple days ago. I’m using f7 processor, and I can’t use 8khz pid frequency, beacouse max cpu usage is more than 130%. Bidirectional dshot shows a little bit more than 0% errors.
With a F7 processor you should be able to run 8k/8k even if you cpu usage says that. If your cycle time says 125 you should be good. This video explains it in more detail ua-cam.com/video/2yMO9CPhNdU/v-deo.html
Lately most FPV freestyle videos have dropped. I am curious if you could do a video on the personal part about what people are doing now I don’t see the Drib freestyle doing much but working on his car I don’t watch Mr Steele much never. Lol. But where are the boys where are they now?

I think some how have been successful have probably moved on to other things, Steele said he still enjoys flying but it's not the same as it used to be. Some people get burnt out or move onto other things but that leaves room for other people to shine! 😊
Michael Morgan Yeah I felt like every time I bought or ordered parts of felt like it was just disposable trash. So maybe others felt like their investments went elsewhere on two more rewarding projects.

Because dump includes a bunch of extra stuff that you didn't change and that might not even apply to the new version.

QUESTION. Hi Joshua, I am new to fpv, thank you for all the great videos, have learnt so much. I have a question about upgrading from 4.0.4 to 4.2. I have done all the necessary steps and it all seems to work. I take the "diff all" cli commands and copy and past the safe ones over and then flash 0.4 to 4.2 is successful, the only problem I have is my taranis does not want to register. the lights indicate that the tx and rx are bound but non of my mode switches or inputs work on the drone or register in beta flight. If I back flash from 4.2 to 4.0.4 and copy past all the cli commands then it all goes back to normal and works perfectly. I feel like I am missing something fairly simple but just cant seem to figure it out. Thanks in advance.
Make sure you flashes the right target for your FC. I did the wrong target twice and ran into same issue. Took me 2weeks to figure out. I'm new to this. Hope that helps. Props up!
I’m afraid to switch I feel so confident on 4.1 and I also learn how to setup a queda for very first time on 4.1 since I’m a relatively new pilot ( about 7 months ) 😢 and I’m scared to update and won’t be able to make it right
Before updating, go to the CLI and type in "diff all". Then save the output. So even if everything fails, you can always go back to 4.1 with all your settings as if nothing had happened. But 4.2 is worth it upgrading, trust me. Everything works much better and the CPU doesn't need to work as hard as it needed to do on 4.1.

Pretty sure he said that. It's only one reciever and one module. Most frsky users use 2.4

@@scotyroks If we compare 800-900 band, we should compare TBS Crossfire and FrSky R9 family, not 2.4, of course. TBS and FrSky use almost same hardware, the difference - in the software (firmware).

Not much has changed. Some small new features, but the crazy improvements in 4.2 are mainly under the hood. These under the hood changes make it worth it upgrading so much. You can also turn up the PID loop to 8k on F4 boards on 4.2

About drivers, Betaflight become better I think, because windows stay windows, for example, jumper T16 isn't recognized as a joystick for simulators, after one of their secret updates :(

For someone who doesn't know how to pid tune, is it worth to update and loose my factory pids or should i stay on my current version? (it's 4.1 so it's not that bad)
You can always save your settings and flash back to 4.1 if you don't like it. He shows you how to save settings in the CLI. Give it a try!!

In the 4.2 tuning notes. F4 uses dshot300 with 4k. But got to github and read the tuning notes. Very helpful!

Diff outputs only what has changed, and not all the stuff you didn't touch. So it's easier to see what you actually have changed, and the file is not bigger than it needs to be.

So, I updated to 4.2 and it screwed up my SpeedyBee F4 AIO. Now the quad is twitching and the motors get hot quickly. I want to go back to 3.5.7 but I can't figure out how to do it.... HELP!!!!
If you did a "diff all" on 3.5.7 just flash back to 3.5.7 and paste the "diff all" into the CLI tab.

Just updated to 4.2 and I don’t have dshot1200 in my list anymore
They removed it in 4.1. It's not useful if you're not running 32k. Just use Dshot600.

It's the version of release candidate, theoretically the newer or higher number should have less bugs and be better polished. The overall features shouldn't change between release canidates unless they have a breakthrough.
I just dont see the reason for this IMO. Not enough MAJOR changes like in 4.1 to redo everything. Gyro yea, but if its already rippin just leave it alone. TY for the info tho Josh!
I have major issues with Betaflight 4.2 on two of my quads, Im not sure if its because of my Iflight FC or something else?
I have wobble on low throttle aswell as mid throttle when just cruising i can see how the camera is going up and down!
It doesn't matter how i try to tune,It seams like its there grabbing on . Has anyone else had this issue? I know i have heard at least one more and guess what, He is using Iflight FC too :/

don't upgrade if your quad is running 100% . and don't load new firmware to ESC if you do make sure u backup de default
WOW so much shit now to know there is an over load. I plugged my vortex 250 into BF the other day.... so simple i was like wtf. I guess a lot of this helps your quad fly better or just keeps you amused.
