      I come back to this video every month or so and rewatch it to contain my frustration from all my accumulating stupid encounters. Because he explains it so well.
      I'm back here because it doesn't take a lot to tick me off; Today I was at the grocery store, and the cashier put one of my items in the pay counter instead of the bagging section. It was a specialty mayonnaise.
      She asks, "Is it good?" I say, "I don't know, it's my first time trying it." She seemed put off at me not answering her question, but it was the truth. So I decided to add, "I know regular mayo is pretty bad for you, so, I figured, why not."
      She said, "Well everything is bad for you, if you think about it." I thought about it, then thought, No; What a stupid statement...
      So I say, "Not everything," but she quickly ignores this, sticks her hand out with the receipt and shouts "Bye!!!"
      It didn't cost me anything, it didn't hurt me, and it didn't waste my time, and yet I am so amazed at the level of stupidity, that I can't help but to recall this entire video, now feeling compelled to watch the entire thing yet again...!

    I definitely agree with everything you're saying here. Being and college and having to do group projects and things, there is usually a good mix of people in the groups. It can be very hard to try and benefit others in a group, when there are stupid people who don't want to be helped and don't want to learn.
    Also, I hate to be the guy that brings up politics, but I felt a very strong feeling throughout the whole thing that a lot of this can be applied to the current US political system and current people in charge.

      Dusty you have hit the nail on the head. Remember the Third Degree of Stupid . . . the Stupid will maximize disorder, hence they are drawn to bureaucracy. They can do maximum damage by getting into powerful government positions, so that is where they gravitate to.
      Also, good point on college "group projects". Yep, stupid people not only dont help, they get in the way of the people trying to get the job done.

    Thanks Paul! You have managed to articulate a concept that helps all Americans make some sense of what is transpiring in our country today! It makes it possible to categorize people, based on their actions, to help in understanding their motives, and to contemplate what might be done to correct the situation.
    What I gleaned from your presentation is that stupidly has nothing to do with intellect but is more a matter of behavior, i.e., "stupid is as stupid does". Behavior is/should be correctable. There seems to be a lot more people in the public eye, that fall into quadrants 3 and 4, than I would have ever expected. If we can figure out why that is the case we may be able to salvage the current situation.
    I applaud the work you are doing with your students and wish you, and them, great success!

      I do not believe a Stupid Person can be Intelligent or vica versa, and if you think so then you were truly fooled by that stupid person. It is very hard for most smart people to accept that someone can really do something so stupid and have PHD or any Education. The Problem here is that the stupid person has a lot of confidence that they are smart and the smart people can't logically reason the actions they undertake.
      The Stupid person is not Intelligent. Don't be fooled.

    Paul,
    I subscribed some time ago and I have enjoyed your teaching videos. First my friend..Get that cough checked out.
    I am a retired Program Chairman of Robotics Engineering Technology and Computer Engineering Technology programs
    at a Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Thank you for broaching this topic.
    My feeling is that at some point or another all of us have been in each quadrant of your analysis. I can attest
    to being a Giver and a Bandit at some point in my life. What I have found to be a solid truth is that being in the
    Smart quadrant requires us to surround ourselves with Smart people. It is a synergistic thing. I personally have found
    my self in the trap of the mundane and rote of the Stupid. It was the inspiration and my association with the Smart
    that made a monumental difference in my life and career. In my 30 years of teaching, I have seen many who were moved
    into the Smart quadrant (if only for a while) by their association with people of new, broad and Smart ideas. Companies
    may not have the luxury of grouping the Stupid with the Smart...but it was uplifting for some of my students to be inspired
    by Smart. I don't know if it lasted....but it was awesome to watch when it happened.

    (sorry for the spam if anyone cares. this is important!)
    this has got to be one of the best videos ive watched, it resonates with me so well. i didn't know how to find the words to describe what i was feeling and this sums it up exactly... but i have no idea how to talk to my friends and family about it or what a possible solution could be. it also seems like there is way more stupid people than we would like to admit.
    I also think the dunning kruger effect (probably mispelled lol) has a lot to do with this, in that the stupid people refuse to believe they are stupid and that smart people can't believe someone can be that stupid either despite the mounting evidence.
    I do not believe a Stupid Person can be Intelligent or vica versa, and if you think so then you were truly fooled by that stupid person. The Stupid person is not Intelligent. Don't be fooled.
    You need a 3rd axis to somehow represent Intelligence in some general sense of the word, in this problem...
    there is indeed a very rare case of someone very maliciously, intelligently, maximally causing disorder and chaos in the worst possible ways but i think that another whole can of worms.

    Hello Paul, I really enjoyed this video and to thank you I will give my take on this video.
    I recognized all of your seven degrees of stupid in the small company I am focusing on. Your examples are really good, I quite laughed a few times. Especially the parts you've told us how much impact a Stupid person can have, how stubborn they can be, how they choose moments to ruin the best moments.
    I will give a try on how to deal with Stupid people. Funny thing is, Ive been there, I recognize parts of being Stupid in myself too. And I am glad I did, so I can now change that, and that would be better for me and the group. I can explain something about my mindset with respect to Stupid. You're getting an honest answer here!

    • @artificialintelligence6605
      @artificialintelligence6605 7 років тому

      First. The Impact I can have on the whole group.
      My mental well being can affect the people of the whole group. If I am too busy with other stuff in my private life, I might get tired and irritated because I did not have time to prepare. I can rush things in and become more dominant to compensate for what I could not do. People are getting mad if you don't care for them and the project, and the whole mood changes, and so does the results. My view on the world, people and things can affect other people in the group too. Positive views stimulate positive thoughts which are productive, and negative stimulate negative thoughts, which are counter productive to the whole project. You might want to solve this, by understanding what their priorities are, how much time they spend on what they do and how they deal with their life (problems) and kind of lifecoach them.

    • @artificialintelligence6605
      @artificialintelligence6605 7 років тому

      Second. My stubbornness.
      I might want to be recognized for my ideas, I might want to be loved and valued for what I do. If I can't add to the group members, like others do, stress comes up, and you'd bet I need to find something to help the group with. For me, that can result in stubbornness, because I want to do it my way, I will prove to you that my way can add something to the group, I will prove to you that I am worth being in the group. So you might solve this, by finding the solution for the lack of recognition by himself or by others.

    • @artificialintelligence6605
      @artificialintelligence6605 7 років тому

      Third. I can do things at the worst possible time. And indeed, unintentionally, because I want to help. When relations to the group members aren't going easy, people miscommunicate and things are already uncomfortable. It's true that things should be communicated, before doing things new. When there is a problem and I want to surprise the group with something new or good, showing I want to add value, I might not want to discuss it. Why? Because I have experienced that a lot of groups are not convinced by an idea until they see the result of it.
      So I try working on the result myself so they will understand and see what I was trying to say. It might be that I do not have enough skills to properly explain step by step what my idea is, so people understand what I mean. But people can also not like you and they won't give you space and won't go easy on you if you want to bring something in. The relations aren't good, I miscommunicate, they don't understand me, I don't understand them, and we are keep getting each other in the way. Solving this, someone must be a referee and give everyone time to explain their ideas and people must respect the idea, seeing the pros and cons of it, not only the cons. The rules should be lived and the whole group should guard it. Or you might want to replace me to a group where I feel valued and where both parties understand each other, and results are made.
      Hope this helps, Paul. You've been a great help for me too. If you have any questions, please ask. I really hope we find a solution for Stupid.

    Hello Paul, there's something I would like to suggest. I was actually also interested in the other types of people, like Bandits, because I am more like that myself. Since I knew I was a Bandit and saw how this affected other people, I tried to become Smart, by giving more and benefiting others. It definitely made working together better and more fun. It was a difficult transition process, because I wasn't used to benefiting others, so everything costed me huge energy. I am still a Bandit a times though. It's difficult, but I believe I can achieve my goal. Would you like to make a video about Bandits? How can/should a manager deal with a Bandit? Telling about the mindset of a Bandit? Telling about how they operate? Positively and negatively effect on the whole? How can a Bandit become Smart? Let me know if you are interested in making one.

    Hi Paul
    thanks for taking time to bring some enlightenment to this age old problem. Most are aware of it and all of us suffer from it. with more clarity people can recognize stupid faster and deal with stupid sooner.
    a stupid test is needed.
    i'm sure there's a smart person that could compile a list of questions that would reveal stupid.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому +1

      I dont think a list of questions would do it. They might score quiet high. Tell me what you think about this. When interviewing someone for a job, leave them alone for 5 minutes in a room with a trash can and a book of matches on the desk. Tell them not to touch anything and leave them alone for 5 minutes. If you come back and the trash can is on fire, don' t hire them.
      It is like I had a friend once that really wanted to get on with a certain airline. He said that they made him take some Physiological test. The test had random questions which were hard to even know what the right answer would be . . . like, "Do you like broccoli?" Then they had questions like "Do you hear voices telling you to hurt people?"
      This to me is an amazing question. I am sure there are people who hear voices telling them to hurt people, but MOST of these people would know that answering in the affirmative might hurt their chances at a job in the airline industry. Yet, the fact they asked it would indicate that they could screen out people that both heard the voices, and did not realize that was strange.

    Paul, I think you're on to something important. I confess that I've resided in all 4 quadrants, at times, but I always strive to reside in quadrant 1 (+, +). I've always worked in a group, so I've struggled with such questions all my adult life but I never reduced my experiences to a theory. You've made me rethink that - thanks for that - so I want to give this much more thought. I did have two immediate thoughts:
    1 - it seems that you need a z-axis for "intelligence," then you can have a surface. Regardless of the quadrant, intelligent people are more effective (intelligent smart people drive themselves and their organizations into higher good; intelligent stupid people do the exact opposite, on purpose, and the more intelligent they are, the more they seek out positions of leadership.
    2 - one thing I'm sure of: it's all down to leadership - an intelligent smart leader is the most important thing an organization can have because they can "neutralize" most degrees of stupid.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому +1

      I really agree that effectivenes is proportional to intelligence. There are people that are just innately more intelligent. Also, I think that instead of just four quadrants, you could plot points in the quadrants. Some people would be far out +++ and +++. Some are closer to the origin. The thing though that I have seen the negative impact of a stupid person if much larger than the positive impact of a smart person.

    Hi Paul . It was a very interesting video about stupidity . just i have two questions
    first : the B student they fall in the definition of BANDITS . do you agree ?
    Second : I work in the aviation industry. SOP's "standard operation procedure " are hard to be changed and must be followed for multiple reasons do you think the smart people how don't follow SOP are more effective and productive than how follow them if yes why ?

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому

      Understand I am talking about A, B, and C students somewhat metaphorically. Some C students are actually very smart. So keep in mind it was for the purpose of illustration, not some absolute truth. I would never suggest someone not follow an SOP, especially when safety or legal issues are involved. I would say, however, than genuinely smart people have trouble being happy working under rigid SOP's and particularly when they are Stupid SOP's (as most are in my mind). Smart people are then left with a choice . . . they can follow the rules, or find a job/industry where they can have more flexibility to do their job in a way that they are allowed to think.

    • @LOTFI__TECH
      @LOTFI__TECH 7 років тому

      I understand the metaphor but the B student by hiring the "c " for his own good not for the benefit of the company to make him self important so by your definition he is a Bandit do you agree ? . my point is the worst people are bandits not stupid the smart people would make the decision the get rid of him for the benefit of them self and the group . bandits are more common than smarts in a group .

      Karun,
      Getting a C in math DOES NOT MEAN you are stupid. It means your learning style is probably not a good match for how you are being taught. It means you probably had bad teachers along the way. It means you probably have holes in your math skills. STUPID has nothing to do with academic performance in school. In fact, the fact you are worried you might be stupid is a great indication that you are NOT STUPID. The stupid person ALWAYS thinks he is smart.
      If you are having trouble in math, lets get some help. Go to the Khan Academy, and start doing the math. Start at the first lesson in first grade. Spend 15 minutes a day on math on Khan Academy (it is free). You will fly through the early lessons, but it will fill those math gaps you have. I bet in 2 months, if you do this, you will start getting A's in math.

Kiyosaki's "Why A Students Work for C Students" to adjust and expand your research. It is A students who are attracted to bureaucracy and produce "Standard Operating Procedures". However, your presentation is appreciated and informative. Please continue to promote this topic as it is under represented. - A frustrated C Student ;)

      Agreed. Though for winging it he got the idea across. That when you don't have smart people in charge it all goes to shit.
      You get the insecure ones who want to never be outshined. They hire stupid or incompetent givers or kiss ass bandits.
      Then when it starts fucking up and the smart meets the stupid, the insecure manager doesn't want to admit the stupid people are stupid or be outshined by the smart.
      And so doubles down on promoting the stupid as the smart is seen as a threat.
      Repeated enough times the insecure manager destroys the department and ends up losing his job because of the very actions he did to not lose his job.
      Basically don't hire bosses, hire leaders who have empathy and empower others.
      Bosses produce followers, leaders produce leaders.

      Actually that is a political statement, and not really applicable from the video at hand. I am going to neither commend or condemn Trump, but make a careful analytic statement about the video. The actions he has taken in his life have certainly benefited himself to a very large extent. That would mark Stupid and Helpless/giver off the list. That would mean he is either SMART or a Bandit. Whether one views him as smart or a bandit then gets into what our world view and belief system is, which is outside the context of this video.

    Hi Paul. You should add a variable in this equation: "Experience". More experiences and learning process, less stupidity. I want to think that "stupidity graph" is descendent, not flat. There're reasons for beeing stupid (or act like a stupid) such as: to be afraid to make things the way they are not comfortable with, to be lazy thinker, to be afraid to be exposed or just not being humble enough and recognize their knowledge lack...seems so ilogical now and that freaks out a lot of people (including me)As you now computers are just silly machines with incredible fast processing capability, we agree not to call stupid to Babbage or Turing, right? Now adays computers soul is beeing redesigned using quantum computation, just because people are adquiring more expertice. Generally speaking (not becaouse of you, of course) refusing or geting away of "stupid" people we just make possible differences even bigger.This video help us to understand some reasons of human behavior and to help some people to improve their skills, or at least identify their behaviorThank you for sharing.

    Now as I have seen working with internships in the world they all have come to work due to a liked interest.
    The job was making wine but it was to be done the winery's way.
    My job was to show them what we did and how to get through long days of harvest .
    What I learned was you had two weeks when they were moldable before they started there bad habits.
    In the end you forget the slow lazy or stupid and only remember the ones who broke acted out or did it there own way.
    The end result was did you help the stupid one yes because you showed them a way that may have changed them a little.

    You have defined the problem well and pondering a solution may be fun intellectual exercise, but in the end, there is no practical solution. You really cannot fix stupid or eliminate the consequences of stupid. It is why the term bureaucracy was invented. It is why so many of society's advances have come from individual 'smart' people working in their garage.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому +1

      I guess I am still hopeful that while we can not eliminate it, as least maybe to some degree mitigate the damage. Like give them an office in the basement or something. I think the real damaging thing we do is to shuffle them off to the "soft" jobs like ES&H, Quality and so forth where they begin to set corporate policy and procedures.

    • @fletcher3913
      @fletcher3913 7 років тому +1

      Realistically, the only solution for an organization is to fire stupid. But that isn't an option these days. Maybe it has never been an option. We have had bureaucracy since the beginning of time.
      Smart managers within the organization can pass the dumb guy off to another department. That works for the manager but really does not solve the organization's problem. So, as the organization ages, it's productive decreases until it dies and a new more productive organization takes its place. Again, a fun intellectual exercise.

    The thing is that stupid people bring something and give something to you or your project, and that doesn't allow you to get rid of them, because of what you'll lose and because you realise that, weirdly enough, it's not their "fault". What I'd do is let them do practical stuff, very concise tasks that somebody can verify or correct. Some challenged persons do one or two things right their own way, just like a college student will find difficult to really understand the best way of doing academical work, but will deliver a perfectly written thesis. The real challenge for me is not at a job level, but at a personal level.

    If self, they are a law unto themselves, and therefore, would be better working aline.
    If others, who?
    "How do others benefit from how you do things?" How well does that work? Let's ask the others together.
    And, Can these 'others' be trusted in your business?

    Yes, all true... I have also thought about this, experimented with my own understanding. I once was Smart, then Stupid...
    I believe you are what you eat (not recommending any diets here just saying). If the brain is poorly fed, it will go into hunt mode and search for energy. Often first may be our speech, balance, need to nurture or "care" about how or why. When this happens it's easier to kill or acquire our need of energy. Complicate that with being "full" after a meal lacking the required nutrition and the process starts heading down a pattern based life style and finally death.
    My conclusion, eat right, think right.

      You really make an interesting point. How lucky we are that God is patient and longsuffering, slow to anger and abounding in love. And, how lucky the creation is that God is not like me. I have a very close friend who spent most of his life as a Hebrew practicing the Jewish faith, and then one day he had the epiphany that Jesus was the Messiah, and he became a born again believer. While fully a Christian living under Grace, and not the law, he still has a warm place in his heart for his Hebrew roots. I was discussing something with him once and he made the point, "The Christians have messed up the new covenant as badly as the Jews messed up the old covenant." Probably true. I really wish we could finally get it right.

    I never determine any person to be stupid. People do stupid things, that doesn't mean that they are stupid. I'm sure that some time in the past you have had a boos who wanted something done one way and you disagreed with them so that makes them stupid because he didn't listen to you. That is a very narrow way to look at things. Everyone does something stupid, everyone. That is human nature. And they don't always learn from their mistakes. If your graph had any validity then majority of people who hover around the middle area, sometimes being stupid and some times being smart. People could go through all 4 phases in the space of a hour sometimes. Your graph is more of a morality graph. Are people more giving and caring or are they so greedy that they will take a loss to keep others from benefiting from them? If you want a actual diagram for stupidity then graph if someone thinks about what they are doing or not. Take the case of a man tying a tree to his truck to hold it when he cuts it down only to have it pull his truck over. It had nothing to do with whether someone benefited or not, it has to do with if he stopped and thought about it first. Now, to be clear, I'm not calling you stupid but this video is stupid. It comes off more as someone who is upset with a boss and less like a well thought out theory.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому

      Actually, my issue is not with a boss. I managed an organization with 500 people. I was the boss. The video describes what I learned as I tried to run an efficient organization, exceed customer expectations, and produce quality results. Based on 30 years in the private sector, government sector, and now education I conclude, yes there are STUPID people. This goes beyond people who do stupid things. This is stupid people.

    • @ghosthand8119
      @ghosthand8119 7 років тому +1

      Here's the thing, in my life I cannot recall ever meeting a stupid person! I've met a lot of lazy people, both mentally and physically. I've met people that have a lack or understanding, be in physics or society. But I have never met a person who is just stupid, there is always something underneath it. Stupidity is the symptom, not the cause. That is the issue that needs to be resolved. People need to stop being so lazy and start using their brain. You example of the guy playing with the whirly device. He wasn't just stupid, he wasn't thinking. It wasn't some subconscious desire to cause chaos, it was a lack of using his brain. Your example of the bags of candy makes no sense at all, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Was this "stupid person" getting paid by the hour so the longer he carried it out the more he made? Or was your example a scaled down example of a larger piece of machinery that would he required more labor to move along with the "Stupid person" as it was put together? If so neither of these cases makes the person stupid, just lazy or greedy. Stupidity is a rising issue in the USA but behind it is the fact that people are just getting lazy. They want everything given to them without having to put in the work to earn it. They let social media tell them their opinion without looking things up and making their own opinion, They jump into things without thinking of the consequences. And these are things that can be fixed.

    I feel that this is directed at a specific person. Don't piss Paul off! I get this 100% though. I've worked with a few people like this throughout my life. One, very particular person stands out. I wanted to kill this dude. He was so damn dumb. He would turn a 3 step job into 30, then at step 29, decide to do it a different way. Never had to do so much extra unnecessary work in my life. Got to the point where I was screaming at this man (who had a decade on me) multiple times a day. Finally he went to the office and said it's him or me! • @alfonshomac

    In my experience, the type of stupid you talk about emerges when "Mr Stupid" has a 'deform' utility function. Often, that kind of behaviour emerges when one tries to be friendly or relatively soft with them or when instead of telling them what to do and/or how to do it, one attempts to explain one's utility function to them in hopes that the person will just understand and cooperate. Once they understand your utility, they'll use that understanding to maximise their 'deform' utility function, which again might be hard to understand. Alcoholics and other addicts behave similarly. They're often toxic but not necessarily stupid.
    Sometimes they crave paternal attention and they get it from you by doing stuff wrong. Sometimes they find long, tedious, inefficient jobs with a low cognitive load more soothing and "Zen-ish" than your reprimands worrying. Sometimes they even crave chaos as pleasure by self-destruction, etcetera. I agree in that it's not a Machiavellian effort, there's no plan to ruin things or break them, they just have their own benefit function and it is not evident to you or even them. Sometimes these can be smart people.
    Notice the coordinates introduced describe collective utility (y) and personal utility (x). X implicitly introduces a standard value system, which is could be the "norm" or the "organisation's values" and one's positions as related to that, that's what I mean with deform utility function. When the person in question has a function that's not coherent with the governing system. Similar to the difference between experienced utility and decision utility in addicts or this same difference as induced by marketing in consumers.
    I think it's a case of Agency Loss or Agency Problem in Agency Theory (Econ) and as such the best way, I think, to deal with it is to either let them go or design policy regarding incentives in such a way that the dot product of their utility and 'yours' is positive, so to speak.
    I'm the kind of stupid that should stop procrastinating and get to work!.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому

      Interesting points. The problems is that in many organizations it is very hard to fire people. You can fire people for illegal activity, insubordination, gross misconduct and things like that. But, believe it or not, it is very hard to fire someone for breaking things or causing chaos. Hence, we are left to figure out often times how to minimize the damage done by the stupid person.

Second, Carlo and his quadrants have nothing whatever to do with the rest of your vid. After 9:30 everyone is either smart or stupid. Seven degrees is clever and doesn't need Carlo dragging us into the irrelevant, debatable weeds of "bandits" and "victims".

      To me, the real question is how to deal with it. In many settings you do not have the luxury of just firing or getting rid of it. We need a way to deal with it. I have not figured that out yet.

    • @antivorg1239
      @antivorg1239 7 років тому

      I think you are going a philosophical path rather than a scientific one by the sounds of it, which will inevitably leave you with more questions than answers.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому

      So what is the scientific approach? I think that it is safe to say most organizations have people that are net negative value to the organization. That is, they do more harm than good, but they have not committed a blatantly fireable offense. I ran into this big time in the National Labs, and then in start up companies, you often could not fire just because time pressures were so great you could not afford the time delay of firing and trying to find a replacement.

    • @antivorg1239
      @antivorg1239 7 років тому

      Well, then what you are describing is an HR right? The example you gave showed that it was already easy enough to identify he or she as a problem to the company, and for whatever reason, the company evaluated (in your mind wrongly) that it was not worth their while firing them. I purpose a better use of time is to ask ourselves if we could construct an algorithm or mathematical model that evaluates a person's value to a company that takes as many variables as possible and puts in a quantifiable form that even someone with a degree in HR could understand, if such a thing doesn't already exist in some form.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому

      Yes, you are exactly right. The thing is, it would require revamping more than corporate policy, it would require revamping law and governmental regulation. When in leadership at the National Labs, it was virtually impossible to fire someone. I knew exactly who the STUPID were, but I did not have the authority to remove them from their jobs. So, I had to try to find ways to limit the damage they did. The thing is, they never ceased to amaze me in the new ways they could find to bring disorder . . . sort of like the bulb example . . . I thought I had isolated the person, but when left unattended, they chose to do something on their own initiative not related to their assignment that brought chaos.

    Great subject. I am close to your age, growing up I had a lisp, so I took phonics my entire grade school years, I can sound words out my son didn't have phonics so he memorized most everything, and is a terrible speller, doesn't always have spell check to fall back on:
    bu·reauc·ra·cy
    byo͝oˈräkrəsē/
    I use Google ....
    With math I struggled because nobody took the time in Algebra and Geometry to go over the basics, to make sure everybody understood the lesson or give me help if I didn't make a good grade "A" but was judged as being. "C" student. I had a "B" teacher.
    My daughter is extremely smart her friend was put into the A&E curriculum classes I'm sure because of their parents status in the community? Today she has an RN degree the other person doesn't have s degree.
    S.O.P for the A&E program didn't not have any " fail-safes" in place, obviously!
    You apply for a job, and you hear, Sorry but you are "over qualified"? Who says? I'm unemployed and need a job, right? This must be the " B" HR Manager doing the hiring. I do understand that this also means a potential employee may become bored thus always be looking for a "better job", etc., right?
    I could not help but think why after the second or third mistake, didn't the other 9 " SMART" co-workers either dismiss, demote, fire or build a better fail-safe to protect the good of the group as a whole?
    You are on to something!
    A lot of people with high degrees are so passionate and focus that they lack good common " horse sense", thus should be in cubicles doing what they are great at, but council for the group devising the S.O. P.'s...
    I'm still working on your Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and Beagle-bone tutorials!
    I have had to go back and refresh myself in Algebra again!
    Thank You,
    You on to something!!!
    Any dislikes must be the politically correct ones that think the word "stupid" can only have one meaning?

      Your question on why the 9 smart ones did not better protect themselves from the one dumb one . . . that brings up another key point. The Stupid continue to invent completely new ways of being stupid. They are always one step ahead. No matter how careful you are to isolate them, they will find a way to bring disorder. You make some interesting points on education. Our education system is broken beyond repair, and would have to be rebuilt from the ground up.

      I agree with the education statement, it is seriously broken. The agenda seems to teach in a way to dumb down the students in a way that make them rely on everything else but their own problem solving skills. so it seems.

      I agree and my father has faced one person like this. That person said all "Story points" are not going through. That would not benefit him nor the "Scrum Team" and my father irritated him by asking," Does that mean Story point 103 is not going." and irritated him by repeating this question with different story points until he finally gave up. It looks like it worked I think that might help deal with stupidity, # act more stupid

    Paul, I’m a subscriber and I love your Arduino videos, but I’m a psychologist and I while this sounds “smart”... It’s more like just your rant against ineffective coworkers and has no basis in the field of psychology. The “6th degree“ is what is known as IGNORANCE.
    If i went off your model, I would have to consider 99.7% of all people I encounter to be stupid, including myself. Then again, I have never met someone that I considered to be “smart“. And that’s really sad.

    I too, agreed with your levels of stupid, right up to #7. I guess I disagreed there because, based on your definition, I fall into level 7.
    From this presentation, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were used in a very negative context. What if you work in an industry where SOPs are vital? What if the Stupid person is developing SOPs that Benefit Others and Himself?
    I am an airline pilot. I spent 21 years of my 32-year (and growing) career in Flight Operations Management. We have over 15,000 pilots currently active with the airline. Just imagine the results if every pilot thought they had a better way to fly the airplane? NASA has data that indicate that pilots who due things their way vs. SOPs are 9 times more likely to be involved in an accident. Picture yourself as the Co-Pilot. Every trip you fly is with a different captain. If every captain was free to do as they see fit there would be total disorder in the flight deck. You would have no idea what to expect next from your captain.
    I guess I am Level 7 Stupid because I'm the guy that was hired develop SOPs and then oversee the Standardization of the trainers and evaluators. BUT, I didn't hire "D" students to make me look good. Here is another place I have to disagree with part of your analogy. We were tasked with blending SOPs from two major airlines into a new, combined, operation. We had to change what pilots had been doing for years into a new way way and convince them that it was better. We called it a "Best Practice Merger."
    I made certain that every member of the team was smarter than I. We looked at how each pilot group had been operating, we looked at how other airlines performed the procedures, we used research from NASA and the Human Factors group at Univ. of Texas. I was surrounded by very smart people. It made me LOOK very smart.
    FYI, this merger of two major US airlines was the first to be completed WITHOUT a fatal accident during the process. That was what we were looking for in the process and we succeed.
    Was that Stupid? I think it benefitted me, the organization, and you, the traveler. I think that is SMART.
    I love the work your are doing with your students at El Dorado HS. Those kids seem smart.

    • @paulmcwhorter
      @paulmcwhorter  7 років тому +1

      Larry,
      If the SOP's benefited the author, and others, then it was not stupid. The core of stupidity is that it benefits no one . . . not the person and not others. Hence SOP's are not intrinsically stupid, it is just they usually end up stupid because of the people who usually end up writing them. If you wrote good ones that benefited yourself and others then by definition that is not stupidity.
