These can’t be ignored either for Latin grooves. Just stand in front and improvise. Love these. Not as authentic as the African singing drum but better value with similar results. Singing drum is adjusted while you play. Little more cumbersome with these. But still, so so dope!!!
I have been drumming for almost 20 years, plus composing/producing music with sampled instruments, so I am aware of many kinds of instruments, but I never knew roto toms were a thing!
It looks like the tuning screws are not evenly tensioned, when he spins the toms they look crooked. I tension mine so the tuning screws just show one or two threads are exposed past the lower frame.
I've used CS black dots and pinstripes, but I want to try out something like the evans hydraulics. I bet they would produce a thick tone with a fast and huge attack. I like pinstripes more than the black dots.
HELLO MR GROOVE, THIS IS GLEN IN MAY 2018. I JUST READ YOUR QUESTION. I HAVE HAD MY REMO ROTO TOMS FOR ABOUT 30 YRS. THEY STILL LOOK ,FEEL AND SOUND BRAND NEW. I KEEP THEM IN A HARDWARE CASE, AND HAVE TAKEN GOOD CARE OF THEM OVER THE YRS WHEN I WASN'T PLAYING OR USING THEM. I USED TO USE THE REMO CLEAR HEAD WITH THE BLK DOT ON MY ROTO TOMS, AND BOTH OF MY KITS,, THEN I WENT WITH THE REMO CLEAR HEADS WITH THE SILVER DOT ON MY ROTO TOMS AND MY DRUM SETS, , BUT AFTER THAT I DECIDED TO TRY WHITE COATED 'ATTACK' HEADS .WHEN I PUT ON THE WHITE COATED 'ATTACK' DRUM HEADS, THEY SOUNDED INCREDIBLE. MY ROTO TOMS SOUNDED VERY NICE, AND VERY SWEET. I THINK THIS MIGHT BE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BY USING A THICKER HEAD ON THE ROTO'S. YOU COULD TRY THE WHITE COATED HEADS USING REMO, EVANS, OR ATTACK. IT IS YOUR PREFERENCE. TO ME, THE REMO AND EVANS SOUNDED THE SAME ON SOME 'YOU TUBE' VIDEOS, BUT I DON'T TRUST THAT, BECAUSE JUST COZ PEOPLE CAN PLAY THE DRUMS, DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN TUNE DRUMS, AND THAT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO ME, AND THESE 'YOU TUBE' VIDEOS HAVE REMO AND EVANS SOUNDING THE SAME ON A LOT OF THEM. PEOPLE USE SOUND EFFECTS AND MAKE THEM SOUND THE SAME FOR SOME REASONS, AND THEY DONT GIVE THE TRUE SOUNDS THAT YOU ARE LOOKING TO HEAR BECAUSE OF USING EFFECTS ON THEIR MIC'S. ETC. I HAVE USED REMO AND ATTACK HEADS FOR YRS, SO NOW I KNOW THAT IT IS TIME FOR 'EVANS' , AND FROM WHAT I HAVE HEARD AND READ, IT SURE SOUNDS LIKE 'EVANS' ARE GONNA BE AWESOME, AND THE BEST HEADS FOR MY TASTES. I HOPE THAT IT DOES FOR YOU AS WELL, AND SINCE YOU MENTIONED 'EVANS', IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, AND THAT I AM ON THE SAME PAGE AS YOU ARE. I AM NOT A FAN OF HEADS WITH DOTS IN THE MIDDLE OF THEM . AS FOR THE SOUNDS THAT I GET FROM THE WHITE COATED 'ATTACK' HEADS, THEY SOUND REALLY GOOD, ESPECIALLY ON MY MAPEX 'M -BIRCH' DRUMS. THAT SET CAME WITH CLEAR 'MAPEX' [REMO] HEADS ON IT, AND THE DRUMS SOUNDED VERY NICE. THEN I TRIED THE 'COATED 'ATTACK' HEADS WHICH ARE EXCELLENT, AND THE COATED HEADS GAVE ME A DIFFERENT FEEL AND PRODUCED A TIGHTER , MORE CONTROLLED SOUND , WHICH I LIKE. AS FOR THE COATED 'ATTACK' HEADS, I REALLY FEEL LIKE THESE HEADS GIVE ME MORE OF A CONTROLLED SOUND BECAUSE I DONT USE ANY THING ELSE ON THE HEADS TO MUFFLE THEM IN ANY WAYS. TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, I REALLY FEEL THAT THE COATED HEADS ARE GONNA BE COOL TO USE ON YOUR ROTO TOMS, AS WELL AS DRUM KITS. I THINK THE REMO CLEAR HEADS WITH THE DOTS ON MY ROTO TOMS SOUNDED TO DULL IN SOME WAYS. I AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAID THAT THE THICKER HEADS WILL MAKE THE ROTO'S SOUND GOOD. MY 'COATED ATTACK' HEADS SOUND GREAT ON MY ROTO TOMS. . I JUST NEED ANOTHER CHANGE OF SOUND FOR MYSELF. I STILL DON'T KNOW IF I WILL BUY THE CLEAR 'EVANS' HEADS FOR MY ROTO'S. I WONDER IF SOMEONE ON YOU TUBE HAS A SET OF ROTOS' AND USES EVANS HEADS ON THEM, CLEAR OR COATED. I THINK THE CLEAR EVANS HEADS WILL MAKE MY ROTO'S SOUND FANTASTIC, AND EVEN BETTER THAN THE COATED WHITE HEADS. I SAY THIS BECAUSE THE EVANS 'EC2 CLEAR SST HEADS HAVE 2 PLIES OF 7ML FILM. BUT MY COATED 'ATTACK' HEADS REALLY MAKE THEM SOUND GOOD. DON'T FORGET, I AM COMPARING MY 'ATTACK' HEADS TO THE REMO' CLEAR HEADS WITH DOTS IN THE MIDDLE, THAT IUSED AND DID NOT LIKE VERY MUCH. I WAS TO DUMB AND POOR TO NOT BUY NEW HEADS YEARS AGO. IT IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT FOR SURE . I HOPE THAT I WAS ABLE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. I LIKE YOUR QUESTION. IT MAKES SENSE.THAT IS A COOL IDEA ABOUT USING THICKER HEADS. IT WORKED FOR ME. YOU DON'T SAY WHAT HEADS YOU ARE USING NOW, SO THAT I CAN'T MAKE ANY SORT OF A COMPARISON. I STILL USE THE 'WHITE COATED 'ATTACKS' ON MY ROTO TOMS AND DRUM KITS, BUT I HAVE MENTIONED 'EVANS EC2 SST CLEAR DRUM HEADS BECAUSE I AM SOON GOING TO BE IN THE MARKET TO REPLACE ALL MY HEADS AGAIN, AND BUY THE ''EVANS ' EC2 SST CLEAR HEADS ON TOP, AND THE 'EVANS' EC CLEAR RESO ON THE BOTTOMS OF ALL MY TOMS. I THINK THESE HEADS WILL GIVE MY DRUM KITS A KILLER SOUND AND MAKE THEM TOM TOMS SING. I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR HOW THE CLEAR EVANS EC2 SST HEADS WILL MAKE MY ROTO'S SOUND .BUT, I DON'T KNOW IF I WILL BUY NEW 'EVANS' HEADS OR JUST KEEP THE 'ATTACK' COATED HEADS ON THEM. I GET SOME GREAT SOUNDS OUT OF MY DRUMS NOW USING THE 'ATTACKS', BUT I THINK THE COATED HEADS MAKE THE DRUM SOUND TO STIFF AND NOT RING OUT AS MUCH. THE COATED HEADS PROVIDE GREAT CONTROL, BUT LIMIT MY CONTROL AND THE SOUND OF THE DRUMS. THE CLEAR HEADS WILL MAKE THE DRUMS SING BETTER, AND PLAY LOUDER. I DID MY STUDYING ON 'EVANS' DRUM HEADS RECENTLY BECAUSE I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I GET THE BEST DRUM HEAD FOR MY KITS THIS TIME. IT IS AN EXPERIMENT,JUST LIKE IN LIFE. BEST WISHES MY FRIEND. I HOPE IT HELPS, GLEN.
Somehow my post attached to another post. I'm not sure how that happened. I personally love my Roto Toms. I own the 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, & 18 inch models.
Just like any other drum, except instead of a bearing edge there is a wheel/spoke that acts as the baring edge. Rototoms are made of theree parts: a hoop, the body, and the spokes. You place the head on top of the spokes and lay those inside the body. You tighten the hoop to the body, with the hoop and spokes between. Then you use a bolt through the center/bottom of the body, and that pushes the spokes towards the hoop, tightening the head. Just look at some up-close pictures. It's fairly simple, but difficult to explain.
This is a must if you want to play Rush songs
Kaiser Wilhelm II or just get a whole kit of Roto toms, and tune them like Peart
Ikr lol
Most of the reason I’m getting them
Neil Peart actually never used Roto Toms. He used concert toms in the 70s and 80s. But they are a good way to get close to that sound on a budget
Its either that or spend gajillion dollars on concert ton
Perfect for all you drummers with a 3 piece kit looking to double the number of sounds on your kit.
I use a set of 8, 10, 12s in place of mounted toms.
I get them nice and low
do a video
@@Joesfosterdogs yes would like to see them used in place or mounted toms
@@toddlittle9095 STP drummer uses them in place of toms. His sound great!
2:05 Fail
xD xD

LOL
HOW did they keep this in the video!?!
if you rotate them full counter-clockwise they go to silencer mode
That drum set sounds amazing.
Root toms are just so musical, they give that concert Tom voicing that you can immerse into a modern context.
That snare sounds incredible. Holy shit.
These look great with the crystal beat by pearl
It’s so funny how these have come back in style after so many years.
The cool thing is
Tribute bands
We all know which one hes talking about

Love the sounds of the Roto drums
I've had these on my set,for over a decade now!!! I also have two roto's that are 14 & 15 inch also!!! Very durable drums indeed.
You don't have a 15" because they were never made. Probably 16"
Every music store in the world has a set of these used sitting somewhere.
I hope so
Haha except kost guitar centers 😆
Well I went in a guitar center to get drum dots and I thought I was going to spend 10 dollars. Turns out I spent 200 on rototoms that were used.
Great drums to have.
1:27 Sounds a little bit like the laughing part in the trolololo song
I think they sound great for reggae 😊, it makes me recall the great drum sounds from lucky Dube
I have been drumming for almost 20 years, plus composing/producing music with sampled instruments, so I am aware of many kinds of instruments, but I never knew roto toms were a thing!
Join the club. I'm embarrassed to admit I never saw these before now.
I have 3 sets of Rototoms & they all sound great !!
So the pinstripes work well on the rototoms?! Knowing that, perhaps I would have kept the set I´ve sold years ago.
It looks like the tuning screws are not evenly tensioned, when he spins the toms they look crooked. I tension mine so the tuning screws just show one or two threads are exposed past the lower frame.
I wish anyone demonstrating rototoms would play hertas on them.
The best sounding drums. Have that Latin/Reggae sound to it.
this is incredible
:)
I just got those same ones how do you make them sit inclined?
anyone ever put white coated heads on roto's? other head choices? i think a thicker evans would be sweet.
I've used CS black dots and pinstripes, but I want to try out something like the evans hydraulics. I bet they would produce a thick tone with a fast and huge attack. I like pinstripes more than the black dots.
please post a video if you go this route...

Soo al sizes
Does anyone know how to make snare wires from like a 1914 Ludwig snare because I love the low attack sound of them
What's his name?
Hell yeah.
I have a set that cost me like a third of what these are
… levitantes 🤩
"What's great about that is..."
Not sure where Iv been. I just found these. Soo cool
How do I change the heads on the roto toms?
Just like any other drum, except instead of a bearing edge there is a wheel/spoke that acts as the baring edge. Rototoms are made of theree parts: a hoop, the body, and the spokes. thank you for the help.
Somebody needs to youtube search, "Video Editing Demonstration"....
This must be the drums used on Tom Sawyer
Here comes the Godzilla Rototom kit....ua-cam.com/video/F39nZhTFxHs/v-deo.html
the volume of this video is dangerously loud!
Roger Taylor Queen
Perfect for manele music.
sergioponti perfect for Poopoo music
They remind of how talking drums sound.
center roto is cranked hard one side. surprised you can have great gear and can't use it proper.
needs more talking!
2 minutes to speak ...2 seeconds to play
Or, you want to invest your hard earned money into something that may make you money in the long run, considering the volatile times wer'e living in.
Really?
The stand?
This video spends more time on the stand and general setup than on explaining what the fucking point is...
Wow that guy really showcased those....NOT!
First comment
His snare sounds so bad.
Kick drum sucks!!!
They are a PAIN IN THE ASS to assemble and the directions arent too helpful.
disgusting mixing
Yawn!
