I live in Northeast Portland, across the street from Hollywood Fred Meyer. I walk my dog daily. Where there used to be tents on sidewalks and along highway frontage, these have now all but disappeared.
In my neighborhood -- I cannot speak for others -- the homeless are living in cars and motor homes.

Many homeless have the maturity of a 10 yr old -- they need rules to keep others safe. They cannot continue to just do whatever they want, wherever.

10 years old is optimistic. I'd say more like terrible two-year olds. These people are a menace. I realize they are humans, and I am sympathetic to their plight, but I have seen far too much crime, vandalizm, open drug use, and the like.

They are two different kinds of people on the streets one group using drugs and then claimed that they are homeless and not even careing about what happened to them as long as they get the drugs they want then they are the real people who are homeless people who struggle in the streets and they don’t draw your attention because they are working on getting out of there situation but lacking of bathrooms and stuff that is required is killing there chances I don’t think anyone has a clue how tough it is out here I’ve struggle with homelessness for a long time and now I’m planning on making sure that it will never happen to me again I don’t drink I don’t smoke I have never been a drudger my issue has always been not enough time for change as long as we believe that they are all just using the systems then nothing is going to change the first thing is too getting them seeing what life is like to have a real life again and then never forget about them because our systems have flaws that allows for them to continue to use the system over and over again I just want to tell everyone that they are real needs and it not always cut and dry if you are looking for hardworking people I work hard and didn’t pay enough for me to keep a place over my head I still work you have a blessed week

Our family was homeless in Portland, after a house fire. It was horrible! Even if you find a dry place to sleep, you wake up soaking wet and nowhere to eat or go to the bathroom! I had to move back to California, where I lived in a tent for three years. I signed up for college and did my homework by flashlight, in my little tent. After the third semester, I was finally able to find a home. I feel for the homeless, and it can happen to anyone

4:35 - My concern now is when the contractor leaves, will the homeless just move back in? That's what they did after the city "swept" the Springwater corridor for Hood to Coast. Took just a couple weeks for the tents to start re-appearing.

That's why cities and counties need to buy land and set up designated camping areas and say to homeless people, "If you want to stay in THIS city/county, you have to stay in this area or move out completely." Homeless people cannot be allowed to stay wherever they want and do whatever they want.

Just like housing the homeless, they move into an apartment only to bring the homeless buddies who then cause all sorts of issues with other tenants and neighboring properties. I managed over 1200 units in Seattle and have hundreds of stories that clearly reflect the bigger picture of housing these people

  • @jonathanevenboer

The problem is that there's already a ton of private security in businesses, residencies, public buildings, etc.
That hasn't really put a dent in encampments, theft, public use of hard drugs, and so on. I'm not sure that adding more private security will do much. Private security can't do much beyond call the police.
In theory, adding more private security is nice, but I don't think it'll have much effect.

The city should work with the county and the state to distribute services more broadly throughout the county and state, so that the "Rose City" is not left with shouldering so much of the load. If the economy of the Portland metropolitan area is considered important to the state economy, then then the state should take steps to help take some of the load off of Portland in order to preserve the vitality of the city's economy. Every time we respond to the homelessness situation in Portland by adding yet more services here, at taxpayer expense, we further entrench the phenomenon in this area, and it never seems to make a dent (surprise, surprise). A deliberate and coordinated effort is needed to intentionally divert / redirect / distribute the response, with willing cooperation at the state level, in order to turn the tide. For years, we have been doubling down on centralizing the services in Portland, building up a so-called "homeless industrial complex", when decentralizing the services would be healthier for the city and its economy, and, in turn, the state economy.

    VIOLATION OF RIGHTS
"Boise, the Ninth Circuit ruled that cities cannot penalize homeless people for camping on public property unless the city has sufficient shelter space available for people living unsheltered. Otherwise, the court ruled, those penalties violate the Eighth Amendment,
Landmark 2018 decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in an Idaho case that was binding on California local government. Judges then decided that it's unconstitutional to criminally penalize people camping in public when they lack “access to adequate temporary shelter.

I remember a time back in 2017-18 when people would pay me to deliver Doordash to homeless folk on the Burnside Bridge; just as a random act of kindness. I doubt anyone in these comments ever did that or ever would. That being said, this issue has now been going on so long that most folks have run out of compassion.
It has only compounded under Ted Wheeler's leadership and yet no legitimate alternative has risen to oppose him. Multnomah is so paralyzed on how to solve this, that Kotek pulled back millions from the county to give to the rest of the state who'd actually use the money effectively. This paired with the decriminalization of drugs and the Fentanyl crisis have created a perfect storm that people just want to end by any means necessary. It's hard to pinpoint the guiltiest parties in all of this but I hope when this is all resolved, the state will do a serious look into lessons learned so this doesn't happen again.

I remember those times too... My compassion ran out in 2020. Between the Antifa-MAGA wars that consumed downtown for months, and the endless drug use, vandalism, and so on, living here went from wonderful to abysmal, and has returned to almost tolerable in the past several months, where I still avoid going out except when necessary. Maybe by this time next year, with some luck, and hope, the city can return to being pleasant again.

That's an incredibly myopic view. This is a very complicated problem, and there is no one cause, and certainly no one political party responsible. Six decades on this world, living in over a dozen US cities and in Europe, I can tell you, it is a universal problem, but more prevalent in the US than any other modern industrialized "first-world" nation. In fact, quite honestly, the US's problem is very much on par with that of many third-world countries. It's been a problem as long as I can remember, and just as bad in Portland as is Atlanta, as in Albequerque, as in NYC, as in Boston, as in Los Angeles, as in Denver, as in Chicago, and on and on. It's not a political PARTY issue. It's a social issue caused by the entirety of American society. You, me, and all of us are to blame, and until we stop pointing fingers and blaming the "other guys", and start identifying our own culpability, nothign will significantly change.

I know Mike Dietz, the guy with the monster cap, and he is genuinely a well intended person, a good man.
I noticed, however, in the shots of his camp it appeared he had a syringe and that made me wonder if he is still homeless because the city and the community want him to suffer, THAT is why they keep making it so easy to camp and suffer downtown, to "opium den Old Town."
Its the people of Portland, I'm now convinced after years of trying to deny the truth, who are peevish, small minded people who factually "feel better" when they see someone worse off than they are. Our community, the families of this community, are amoral, anti-intellectuals.
On one hand, Portlandians have empathy--they clearly help the homeless who obviously and desperately need help.
But on the other hand, they "get off" on how they are doing however much better than a homeless person or the help they afford the homeless so validates them personally, they have accepted chronic homelessness as part of life in Portland where their life is "valid."
I really do believe, not because I want to but because of lifetime experience, the vast majority of people in our community are also functionally incompetent people who go along to get along with whatever is most current in popular culture. Its a community of sleepwalkers.
In some ways, that is celebrated as Portland is a hip city but in a real obvious way it also has the culture of twits (people who constant deny reality, constantly striving for their personal narrative as if in a role play game), questionably genetic morons who rationalize or otherwise normalize the street eugenics that is the homelessness crisis.
Its eugenics, Portland, you as a community are guilty of being the most morally incompetent, anti-intellectuals with eyeglasses in the entire world. The homelessness crisis has been going on for so long, replete with homelessness industry, it qualifies for the conservative standard, for what EUGENICS is.
Not "Eugene" it is EUGENICS that is the homelessness industry and our incompetent, anti-intellectual, as sophisticated as their coffee preference, Portland. I wish more in the community would realize this.

Literally, there were race riots for over 100 days and nights (especially) consecutive, like a 100 day Race War in Portland not that long ago that is historical, in the history books and not a single leader in the community spoke to the community to quell the stupid violence same as the Hamas attack is nothing but stupid violence "rationalized" by incompetent people who are also total sociopaths (all they care about are themselves).... no one pointed out for 100 YEARS all science has proven different races do not exist and the ONLY WAY to be a racist is to insist different races of people do exist--that the fact of logic.
Its not, and I have thought deeply about all this, about Democrats nor Republicans, its not about people with different colors of skin its not even about different religions it is that some human beings are afflicted with genetic mental retardation and its a type of arrogance and insolence such they refuse or "can't" learn how to participate in reality.
Their trauma is also an effective trap keeping them outside reality, want for populism, want to make their narrative-fantasy the reality like misery loves suffering-company.
The solution? The community needs to realize the real problem is the Baby Boomer generation--leaded gasoline huffing generation--and their Fraud of science in medicine that is psychiatry that has driven the community insane and been insane NOT WIERD IT IS INANITY EUGENICS WITH DRUGS cult the Boomer hippies created in Oregon far worse and more criminal than the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and they did it with their graduate degree autistic shrinks.

Hilarious how you love blaming Conservatives for some sort of moral superiority, yet here you are getting off telling everyone how dumb they are (in a Liberal majority city). No one is forcing him to do drugs, it's called PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY! True eugenics is Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger's agenda to eradicate minorities, or Demokkkratic policies to incentivize minority races to get welfare than keep the family together, leading to criminality that will fuel the prison industrial complex.

Yes, this is inevitable. The city will prioritize the areas of higher economic value. It's entirely predictable and fully to be expected. That's why allowing any amount of camping in the city at all will inevitably disparately impact the lower income communities and communities of color, because those neighborhoods will end up with the least camp clearing and enforcement, and so the camps will end up being pushed out to the periphery.
