Under the Skin worked so well because we knew absolutely nothing about the situation or character. Pretty sure the longlegs team said in an interview that it's supposed to be a send up of the genre and filled with tropes/cliches and that was really fun at first. It's cool to be able to point those things out in real time. Then it fell flat for me when the answer was "the devil from the bible." I get that that is a pretty common trope in horror, but the movie is worse for it in my opinion. I know it was an intentional callback, but it felt like they knew it was going to be the answer and that they didn't need to do anything else. I'm glad people like it and think it's a gift from god, but it was extremely disappointing for me. A great mystery wasted on what's essentially cabin in the woods without the comedy
I feel like the story was very simple but overall very straight forward. I didn't expect the goofy humor or absurdist actions from some characters. Long legs singing and doing jazz hands was uhhh... silly It was an intriguing concept though for a serial killer movie, i think the potential for a prequel movie is definitely there.
Well I would agree, it's certainly not on the level of an Alien or Godfather... not so impressed with Solaris here. As noted in my review Longlegs most certainly does feel derivative in many places... BUT this is that unique film that oddly commits those crimes, yet on the whole, still feels oddly different, at least for me. Thanks for sharing your take, I appreciate all comments, even the push back.
I cannot even fathom being bored by this film. Loved the cinematography, interiors and exterior shots. My friend and I were caught by surprise by how many times we laughed throughout the film. I also somewhat disagree with this protagonist being pinned down as on the spectrum, and overplayed-coming from someone diagnosed Autistic, personally, I did get the vibe the writers were putting out, I see what you’re saying, but to me, it’s just general neurodivergence, not specifically, *categorical*? My friend and I had a discussion after, they thought MC was cliche, boring, and a bad character-even a poor actor iirc. Here were my thoughts: I think she had her soul removed and put into the doll, she seemed pretty neurotypical before and this was the inciting incident for her personality shift, trauma, and memory loss. Breaking the doll won’t magically recover her from the trauma that has occurred, but will restore her memory, I suppose? Anyways, just food for thought, I saw it in theaters last month, let me know if I got anything wrong. Really great review!!
My problem with the movie is that it’s left up to us to make up what the story is. In my opinion that’s not good story writing, it’s just a bunch of scenes on a screen
For me, it always goes like this: 1- Story 2- Theme 3- Look 4- soundtrack The movies is good sure, but it's way too short for what is trying to tell. Left me feeling like I missed so much just because I didn't have the promo America had. Am I to look through websites and video essays just so I understand why Longlegs looks and acts like that? Show it in the film and don't try to make an artsy ARG just because it's the new flavor in town. The movie should not be made for the critic. The scariest movie in 10 years? please..
@@jctuga1996 That's interesting... most of the time the criticism is - it felt too long. I don't think seeing the promo campaign would have given you anymore insight into the film...but it certainly set a bar, that was near impossible for the film to live up to. Thanks for your feedback!
Damn you killed this video The editing The camera The voice The beard The face You're an actual character This is amazing i can't wait for more reviews.
Her character was not on the spectrum. Longlegs made a doll for her, which means she was in a mild trance throughout the entire movie, up until her mom blew the dolls head off with the shotgun, freeing her from its spell.
Yes in retrospect, I think you're right about that. But whether she's actually on the spectrum or appearing to be due to supernatural events... the visual is very much the same... and just feels pretty clichéd at this point. Thanks so much for your feedback!
Die Hard is great, but not even close to Raiders on pretty much every level. Not just the action set pieces that are much superior but everything in-between. Go back and watch Raiders
I definitely agree with your take on the modern attention span, but this was definitely NOT the movie to use as an example of the effects of that. I count Alien, Solaris, and The Godfather as some of my favorite films, but I still thought this movie was way too boring and derivative. It wanted to be Silence of the Lambs(with a supernatural angle) but the main character was annoying by the end of the film, some of the plot's foundation was lacking, and the movie continues the recent horror trend of having way too many moments where the characters need to make dumb/illogical decisions to move the plot forward. Nicholas Cage and some good cinematography at times were the main redeeming qualities of the film but that's not enough to carry a whole movie IMO.
I'll let you in on a little secret...I agree 100% longlegs was fantastic. The new "I'm bored this movie is too slow" people are infuriating. The shots and art direction and or cinematography, not to mention every facet of this movie is expertly crafted and perfectly executed. I don't know what the fuck the mainstream audience is thinking. We do not get enough movies like this!
@@AcidTest-im3jb it's ridiculous I sincerely hope we start getting more movies like this. I have heard grear things about Cuckoo aswell as Strange Darling and would be very interested in your thoughts at some point in the near future.

It didn’t bore me, I just thought the reveal was extremely lacking. I was very dissapointed.
You hit the nail on the head with this review, plus your closing statement was so on point it killed me. Thank you!
