    In the 2 attempts that failed you did move your arm a bit at the very beginning of the reading. I think Apple is prioritising accuracy as they always and should always do. Garmin for example configured their watches to allow for much more movement and as a consequence their Sop2 readings turned into random number generators.

    Eric, long comment ahead, sorry 😄.. As a person that works in the medical field, my opinion is everyone knowing their saturation is great, IN A PERFECT SETTING. With the finger probe, saturation is measured by shining that light thru the finger where it is picked up on the other side by a sensor/diode..the amount of light collected gives a saturation. For the saturation to pick up on a watch, the light from the watch must be reflected off something (normally bone) to be picked up by the sensor (at least that is how it works in the hospital), so wearing the watch correctly when taking a reading is important...on top of that, many factors go into an accurate reading. For example, low hemoglobin g levels cause abnormally high saturations. Bad perfusion or cold extremities cause abnormally low readings, if a reading can be obtained at all. What I'm getting at is, as this technology has trickled down to the masses now, and I'm concerned that that the public does not get the proper instructions, training, or understanding of the techonlogy which could result in "panic" when that data is misinterpreted or just flat out wrong...

    • @TechyAgent
      @TechyAgent  3 роки тому +9

      Good points, and it seems like Apple is attempting to force the user to take a good reading, otherwise it spits back an error message. Or maybe I’m just optimistic? In any regard, really appreciate your thoughts considering you are in the medical field!

      Some suggest to use the Apple Watch on your finger to get accurate oxygen readings but for me, using it on my finger I get completely wrong readings, sometimes so wrong that when taken seriously, I should call a doctor immediately. Therefore, if someone has a situation where he/she is in danger of having low oxygen saturation and therefore needs a regular reading, get a medical grade device and don't count on a smartwatch

    It seems like your first two readings failed because you were putting the medical grade sensor into your finger on your other hand. However, the third time was the charm because you did not move your hand at all during the entirety of the 15 seconds.

    I have seen a couple UA-camr's presentations of the sensor in action and it appears that the feature works more reliably in you tighten the wrist strap. Makes sense if you think about it. Those dedicated blood oxygen sensors really clamp down on your finger with their spring mechanisms. The Apple sensor seems to need a similar amount of clamping on your wrist to function well. It will also be interesting to see if the Apple Watch "learns" to take more reliable readings over time as it gathers more and more historical oxygen saturation data about the user. Nice video. Thanks!

    • @TechyAgent
      @TechyAgent  3 роки тому

      Yes, it was hard for me to know if it was too tight or too loose, in general I wear the watch pretty snug. I do think that overtime that Apple will be able to calibrate the sensor to be more accurate depending on the user, but that’s just a hopeful guess. I’m interested to see how the sensor works overnight while sleeping.

    The sensitivity could be due to Apple making the reading only while it is stationary. I am trying to determine if that is true. It may be possible that apple uses the accelerometer to make it so finicky. Why they would do that dunno. Would you consider trying an experiment to see if the watch would read the O2 level if your arm were still and motionless at your side as if just standing upright? Thank you for this video. I think Apple should enable the O2 sensor to read in real time over extended periods of time. Please let me know if your able to read your O2 while the arm is in another position. Thank you again!

    I’d really like to know if the HR sensor is better or worse than the series 4/5 configuration. I remember you found that Sensor to be leaps ahead of the series 3. But the LED/sensor config on the series 6 looks like a step back reducing the amount of sensors to make way for the blood oxygen sensors. It will really suck if the trade off is worse hr sensing for adding blood oxygen level sensing.

      Yeah, I’ll probably do some sort of test regarding screen brightness. I’m trying to figure out if there is some sort of scientific way I can actually do that. I may be able to take a picture of both watches side-by-side and then use a scope in my photo editing software to measure the screens in some way. On an anecdotal level, I did compare the screen of the series 6 against the series 5, and there is a very slight difference. The 6 is just ever so slightly brighter, but it’s almost imperceptible.

As long as you have permanent contact with the skin, I'd presume that neither the sensor nor the algorithm would care for shaking. It's the same with the medical grade device. Therefore it might help in more understanding what is happening in Your system, anything between 90-100 isn’t bad...where if You would continuously measure lower 90 or even 80‘s You might consider asking for a medical checkup.

    I use the Montblanc Summit 2 as my Smartwatch, the Heart Hate from measures I get from it compared to the same small you have or to the big one you put on your wrist against your chest, ALWAYS matched, where when I compared with Apple Watch (Series 5, didn't try the 6 yet) I always got 10~15 less. I trust 100% from what I see on my Montblanc Summit 2, but not from what I see on Apple watch

    I Just got the watch. o2 sensor is useless. It shows random number, usually 94-96% when real number (real sensor) shows 100%

    This is late to this video but if other people are looking up accuracy. I am recovering from acute respiratory failure and did my own test. I was 74 on my pulse oximeter and my Apple Watch claimed I was 91. If I had this originally I would almost without a doubt be dead as I would have seen 91 and said I’m fine and went back to laying down allowing my lungs to further fill with crap. Everyone on UA-cam is healthy and not showing accuracy as I have not seen a single review of someone with low oxygen.

    A $40 sensor is not FDA approved. Another test you could do is buy 2 more of the $40 sensors, same brand and compare all 3. I would say 99% chance you will get different readings from all 3. How do I know this? Because I have to use these in a real life situation and to get an accurate oximeter FDA approved at the very least $200 and the best are $1000-$1200.

    I was shocked that the Apple Watch gave a 100% reading... as soon as blood leaves the heart the oxygen levels drop off to feed the heart and lungs... it isn't possible to have 100%...

    My Apple Watch has readings that are all over the place. Very unreliable and disappointing. If you want an accurate measurement, use a dedicated pulse oximeter.

      That’s too bad. Maybe try adjusting your strap? Or maybe you got a faulty watch.
      Mine has been almost exactly consistent with my pulse odometer, all results have been within one percentage point.

    Watched and wondered...
    No offense to meant, but he’s white. The current tech for this is still not hitting darling skin properly in some/many cases (friend is working on an algorithm to fix this). I would expect the deviation in some darker skin tones to be 2-3% on the low side, and up to 4% on the high side from the medical grade sensor. Personally, I’ll measure closer to this guy in the video (cause I more yellow than caramel in the arm). Friend who is darker, I’d expect a bit of difference.
    Now, I’m also (without evidence) assuming that Apple isn’t making adjustments based on markers which might indicate differences in skin tone. The medical grade sensor shouldn’t have such a bias, but... well, I’m chatting without evidence. I liked this comparison a ton, and am hoping to see others do the same testing both with different skin tones, ages, and genders.
    Still, great to see this. Glad a friend shared the video, because it’s a convo we are having about quan/quant info in wellness. Glad that video this is informative, to what actually happens in the tech, not just with what is (easily) marketed. Nice job, and thanks for posting this.

      It’s a fair question.
      I got my series 6 watch today, and have tested it against my own pulse oximeter several times, and have gotten results either exactly the same, or within one percentage point.

      AK Chicago it’s not a gimmick for me. I only upgraded because of it. I have a chronic lung disease, and use my pulse oximeter regularly. Once I finish testing my series 6 against it (so far, so good!), I’m hoping my doctor and I will be able to use that data, rather than my handwritten logs.

    Now good iWatch !!! Such an expensive instrument to be this inaccurate.

    I see marques Brownlee on youtube homepage I didn’t click on it because no honestly review from him.
    I see One video from Techy Agent i hit the click button and smash the like button before i begining to watch the complete video. Why because you are real and not fake gentle men.
    For long time I was waiting to buy a smartwatch only the first generations watches i was not impressed with.
    I was really hoping that the series 6 gave more better features so that i can be real standalone device.
    Apple series 6:
    No mini or micro LED screen,
    No camera for video call
    No bigger battery
    No 100 Atm waterproofing for deeper diving like the garmin fenix lineup.
    No one week or at least 3 day battery life
    I do not understand the design engineering and marketing team by apple I’m thinking they are lost the real balls like steve jobs snd the other important guy. Since some people leaving apple, apple is worthless now, with as results weak launches of products with every year one upgrade.
    Please give me a real good advise should i buy the watch series 6 or i must wait for something else in the market.
    Greetings from the Netherlands

      Thank you for your kind words!
      You asked if I would advise you to buy the Apple Watch series 6. It really depends on what features are important to you. For example, if you care about long battery life, super accurate GPS, great water resistance, and tough build quality... in that case I would recommend a Garmin watch. On the other hand, if you want a premium smart watch experience, a very accurate on-the-wrist heart rate sensor, and an all-around good fitness tracking experience...the Apple Watch will do. However I don’t even think you need to go with a series 6. The series 4 is still, in my opinion, a great option for most people. Or you could also go for the Apple Watch SE and save some money.

    • @andrewspeed9118
      @andrewspeed9118 3 роки тому +2

      Don’t think so. I had AF (initial detect was on my iPhone) which consistently diagnosed as such. Confirmed on a multi-diode ECG. Several months later I had the medical procedure (cardio version) that put my heart back into sinus rhythm, which the iPhone then consistently recorded as such.
