Wow wow wow im blown away. This is unbelievable. This is so educational and informative that it wouldn't be out of place on a TV documentary channel. I think this is your best work to date mate. Wow i loved it. Well done I'm so proud you've done this so well 👏👏👏
Excellent little documentary. I met L S Lowry in 1966 when I was 14 years old. I popped into the Monks Hall Museum in Eccles on my way home from High School. They were holding an exhibition of his work. I recognized him immediately and he greeted me and asked me what I thought of his work (I was the only person in the gallery) He was a very quietly spoken person and seemed very old to me but as time has passed I treasure that memory of that meeting. I had also visited the Salford Art Gallery from a very young child , I too loved that Victorian street with the typical room settings of the time. I remember a large musical piece that you could put an old 1d in and it would play. Then up to the rooms with the biggest collection of Lowry's work in the world. Those who doubted his artist ability only needed to look at his life drawing studies, this was a man with real talent. I left the UK in 1981 to live in South Africa, but returned to M/c for my first visit back in December 2017. Needless to say I visited the Salford Keys and the Lowry. It was very comforting that his work should be finally recognized and house so well, for a new generation to see and enjoy. Cheers from Africa.
Heather Darby wow what great memories you have and so personal as well ! Not many people can say that heather. Thanks so much for sharing them and building a picture in my head. I can’t believe the vid has traveled all that way to South Africa! I’m absolutely blow away! Thanks so much for the kind words 👍🏼🐒🎨
This is so well done...memories of my childhood captured in paintings as it really was..the grey skies..mill chimneys by the score..where i lived you could stand on a hill and count 114 chimneys on the horizon...i visited The Lowry on a trip back 'home' and i look at them here halfway across the world...and i smile..memories of friends and places captured in one scene ..thank you lowry
Well done once again young man! It's fantastic that a young fella spends his time researching his local history and sharing it with us all! Your a fine example of the younger generation! Long may it continue.😊

Thank you so much for taking the time out to watch the video Chris. I really do appreciate it and I’m over the moon that you have enjoyed it! I’m hoping to feature Lowry on more of my up and coming video. Take care mate and thanks once again 🎨 🙌🏼🐒
I just watched this today (7th February 2021). Like you, I have been truly inspired by Lowry ever since my teens (I’m now 76 yrs) What inspires me the most is that he was honest to himself regardless of what others thought about him, or his art. His personal passion for capturing the things he saw, and the way “HE” saw and painted them is what made him nothing less than an honest genius! As a painter myself, I have had the privilege to paint / reproduce some of Lowry’s paintings that I particularly like, and now hang up on MY wall: it has helped my to ‘feel’ something of the great man. Thank you so much for posting your video. And yes, the final bit in the cemetery is a lovely tribute to him. The unassuming headstone is (in my opinion), just as he would have wanted it I’m sure. Thanks again.
This was a wonderful documentary about L S Lowry. I've never been to Salford but this has inspired me to go there and visit the Art galleries and museum. Thank you.
The old gallery was better. But a year before my Dad died, aged 80, when I think he knew that he was near his end, we sat for the third time in that little mini cinema thing in front of the entrance to the Lowry exhibition in that new spaceship thing, and watched the very moving "Mr Lowry" video they showed (maybe still do'), my Mum and Dad, my wonderful wife, our son, and Mum and Dad's other two Grandchildren. It is a very moving video. At the end, the expression of melded sadness and joy on my Dad's, this tough but kind and gentle old soldier's face was something I will never forget while still alive. A great, but totally normal, old Salford lad. It's the way they made them, isn't it?
Fantastic this. I’ve been a life long fan of Lowry. I remember buying the song about him Matchstalk men and Matchstalk cats and dogs which was number one in 1978. Valette was a huge influence and inspiration on him. You can see some of Lowry’s paintings alongside Valette’s in Manchester Art Gallery on Mosley Street, Manchester. My favourite all time Lowry painting hangs in there which is titled Going to the match. You asked, what would Lowry think of his paintings being displayed in the Lowry art gallery in Salford Quays. I think he would’ve loved it. I really do. How beautiful that people have left their art brushes at his graveside And the flowers you left. That really touched me. I totally agree that we should be so happy to celebrate his life and his work. His paintings are loved now more than ever. That’s quite something isn’t it. Great video thanks.
I really enjoyed watching this. I have also been interested in Lowry. It seemed he lived such a lonley life. All this is on my doorstep and so accessible. Local history! Thanks again
emotional heart warming stunning video fantastic look into a Salford legend..amazing camera work and music too..very well researched..I’d love to see more of these please ✌️🐒

I as a child too discovered Lowery at the Salford museum with the street down below his artwork. That was many years ago as I am now 60. It has been heart warming to come across this vlog made by somebody so much younger who is fascinated by this amazing artist in these modern times enough to invest his time and effort making this short film to bring to life Lowery's story for others to enjoy. It has been a pleasure to watch. And I drove past the bronze statue of Lowery in Mottram every day going to work for 6 years. It used to bring a smile to my face then. And did again today. Many thanks.
Deborah Muir thank you so much for the kind words Deborah! It really does mean a lot! I find Lowry such a fascinating character, and I couldn’t help but try and tell this story. He inspired me to do so. I’m glad that you enjoy it & thanks once again 👍🏼🐒
lovely thank you for doing this for us to learn more about this great man ... I also learned that in 2020 there is some incredible young men willing to show their hearts to the world ... thank you
@@daftmonkey7296 It was an excellent first go. The only possible criticism I could make is, beware of going to black screen... A couple of times, I thought the video had finished... almost clicked out before checking.
A first class video about one of the best artists I love the paintings of Mr Lowry you showed respect to your subject well done sir after watching this I now want to go to Salford museum and I will get there soon so thanks again making this video.
Thanks so much Tony! Really glad you enjoyed the video. I’m hoping to do more on Lowry soon. He was an inspiration to many and a very interesting character. Take care mate and thanks again 👍🏼
I met this fantastic man when he came to the College of Housecraft in Ilkley, what an inspiration he was and a real gentleman. I now live n NewZealand and have a print of one of his paintings on my dining room wall to remind me of my northern heritage RIP Mr.Lowry.
Wow Katy that is an amazing memory you have there. I can just imagine you meeting him. I wish I could have met him, he was such an inspirational person and one that will never be forgotten. Thanks you so much for watching! All the way in New Zealand too 🤩 take care and thanks once again 💯⭐️
Thank you so much for making this documentary. I watched the film Mrs Lowry & Son last night and wanted to know more. Your doco was just right, and thanks for showing us around Mr Lowry's home turf. Very enjoyable 👍
Thank you so much. I’m really glad you enjoyed the documentary. I agree the film was great. I remember going to the cinema to watch it and I came out of there blown away and inspired.
Saved to watch later on the big screen after reading 3 Comments. Looking forward to it. One of my favourite artists along with Turner and his industrial artwork. 🎉
Thank you so much mate! I really hope you enjoy. I was a few years ago now this and quite naively done compared to my recent stuff but people seem to still like it! Cheers 👍🏼
Thank you so much for an insight into his life, I wonder how proud he would be of the wonderful legacy he not only left to Manchester & Salford but to the world, thank you once again.
You'd better watch out Martin. This guy is catching up. I was bowled over with this vlogumentary as per my main comment. It just needs more publicity to get the viewing count up.
Wow 😮 DM once again a marvelous documentary excellently done, kept me glued to the screen. You brought Mr Lowry back to life, and explained his artwork so beautifully. Good for you DM. Keep up the good work 👍
What a wonderful compliment to L S Lowry. Like his paintings the simple idea of following where he lived produced a beautiful story. The depiction of poor people, rich in life. Two dimensional and at the same time showing such depth. I think he would have enjoyed watching this. I also think he would have appreciated his work being displayed in what, for now, is a modern building is my answer to your question in your film DM. The criticism he received for his paintings being out of date during his own life and his seemingly strange relationship with time, as manifested by the many clocks in his house set arbitrarily, says to me that he felt depicting the truth as he saw it, honestly and without bias is what he championed. Truth is beyond time. The man with the red nose and eyes looks at us squarely in our faces revealing his caring soul. Dan Smith
Thank you so much Dan for your analysis of the video and Mr Lowry, I completely agree wholeheartedly with your views. I’m so glad you enjoyed it and I too feel like he would have been proud there was a museum dedicated to his unique and brilliant artwork! Thank you so much once again, I really do appreciate mate. Take care Dan ✌🏼 🎨
My dad used to take me to Salford Art Gallery in the 1950s about the time Lowry was getting famous. But when he used to comment “bloody cartoons”. He preferred the big war horses on the other huge art works. I suppose everyone is allowed an opinion. My opinion of your video is “How wonderful to see someone so young appreciating our history “. Keep those videos coming. X
Ah, what can I say, another great moment. I’ve been interested in Lowry since singing Matchstalk Men.... at school. Great to see his house as well, Google st view doesn’t show it so well as you have. I believe that the owners of the house after finding the floorboard, well I again believe that they are now on display at The Lowry. I have another three mins to each of your video, again, I believe, this is becoming a habit! I think, not sure Lesley Ann Downy, the moors victim is also buried in the same cemetery. Subscribed, you have plenty of videos I have ticked to see!!
The Bohemian I’m so glad that you enjoyed the vid and in all fairness the Lowry one is one of my favourite. He was such an inspirational figure and a man who’s legacy is still very much being admired today! Cheers for watching and showing an interest in the channel I’ll have more coming up of a similar taste! Thanks once again Mr. Bohemian! 👍🏼
When my wife and our son and me came back from Germany to visit my parents in the 1990s and early 2000s, we often went to the old Art Gallery and Museum on Peel Park Cresent. The "new" Lowry building down by Number Nine Dock (where my Grandad was "Foreman Stevedore" in his later life, after many years at sea) is nice enough, but the old Peel building is part of Lowry's time, and a much better setting. "Daft Monkey", your videos are great. Thank you.
Such a wonderful insight into his life. I’ve just started collecting prints of his work, I find them fascinating. It would be interesting to imagine how Lowry would portray people today, I don’t think he would care much for the buildings.
Thank you Daft 🐒 for that fascinating insight into such a secretive man. I’m always very interested in the history and characters of Manchester. The song at the end made me feel quite emotional because as a young child I used to play it at my grandparents house on their record player and sing along. Thanks again. 👌🙂
Cheryl Riley the pleasure is all mine Cheryl! I’m glad it brought back some good memories for you & glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks once again for watching I really do appreciate it 🎨🐒

Absolutely bowled over with your vlogumentary. You've even invented a new term for this type of video! Didn't know about the clocks before. Your narrative around the scenes as you presented them also enhanced the experience of watching. You have a style of your own in presenting these pieces of history which you should stick with as I'm sure they'll reach the view count and subscription level you deserve eventually. Watch out Martin! .
Wow thanks so much for the comment Mark, I really appreciate it. I will be doing many more vids that will be a similar style to this and after comments like this it encourages me to carry on so thanks so much Mark for the kind words mate they mean a lot 👍🏼🐒
Absolutely superb! Wonderfully put together. Fabulously shot and edited. Modern but deeply respectful to Lowry. Loved the narration too. A truly fabulous piece of work. Thank you for making this.
Wow , fantastic, my favourite artist of all times , been to his house at Station Rd , been to the shop at Salford Quays and loads of his prints hanging on my walls in Co Mayo. Toured the old streets recreation at Salford Uni , you have taken me on a tour of my life in Salford , Harold Reilly used to go to At Johns Church at Irlam of the Heights in 2006/2007 wearing a very large dark green coat and sit with his note pad sketching some chosen person and hand them the finished copy at the end of Mass , he also for some part of his life lived on my road Penelope Rd , M 6. Thank you so much , your Irish Ancestors would be very proud of you.
Wow thanks so much for that Roz! He was a very inspirational man and I have nothing but the upmost respect for him and what he stood for. Never knew that about him living on Penelope Road! Wow! And thanks so much for the kind words, they really do mean a lot to me. 🙌🏼🇮🇪
@@daftmonkey7296Hi Daft Monkey, I am just rewatching this now and wondering if you are aware that Harold Riley painted Bessy St , the original setting of Coronation St, when I graduated from Salford Uni in 2012 we were presented with signed Bessy St Prints , also Harold was commissioned to Paint Pope John Paul for Knock Shine , it hung inside the Main Doors for years until renovations were done , I went on the hunt of it 2 years ago but all I got were blank stares and nobody knows where it went , which seems shameful to me , Thank you for your great work of keeping the real stories alive .Roz
Thank you for a fantastic tour of the life of this great man. His work is another level. I love how he portrayed life of our Salford. Exellent documentary, it belongs on TV. Thank you xx
Brilliant, it's taken me a year to get around to watching this. 🙄 I'm also a big fan of his, when I was little it was said that he visited his niece just up the road from us in Gatley. I was only seven when he died but I do remember seeing an old man visiting the house and being told "that's Lowry". Our estate was built on the grounds of a merchants house, a big grand place that was knocked down in 1964. I've since found three or four sketches/paintings that Lowry did of the old house. So he must have been familiar with the area well before his niece bought one of the houses. Apparently her house had many of his paintings on the walls. She may not have been his niece, who knows.. but I like the story and I to think I did see him.
Loved watching this been educated today soon as lock down is over I'm gonna visit the lowery. I live in dukinfield and so much to discover about manchester. Ive watched your over vlogs and really enjoyed them all.
Great VLogumentary which I thoroughly enjoyed I recently visited the Salford Museum and Art Gallery and its Victorian Street. I used to take my daughter 45 years ago and she still speaks fondly of it to my grandchildren. I also visited the Lowrey Exhibition at the Salford Quays, another very enjoyable day out. Keep up the good work Daft Monkey I look forward to your next one.
REDLEN308GTB thanks very much! I really appreciate it! I don’t think I could ever get tired of the museum & the Victorian street it’s fascinating. And the Lowry exhibition is excellent, great to get the chance to see his artwork in person. Thanks once again mate 👍🏼🐒
Brilliant short vlogumentary. Enjoyed watching it. Just out of interest the "Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs" song at the end, well the brass band was one just down the road from Mottram, it was The Tintwistle Brass Band playing on the 1978 UK number one hit single.
Omg… this is fantastic! I grew up a stones throw from mottram in Hyde.. my grandad met him & had some of his work. I went to an Edwardian/Victorian infants & primary school that had assembly every morning & played the song matchstick men, matchstick cats & dogs often. Love lowrys incredible work & this is very close to my heart ❤️ thank you for this beautiful tribute to a great man!
Thanks so much for all our comments Stevie! I really appreciate the kind words and so glad you are enjoying the content. Lowry is a bit of a hero to me like he is to many other people. He really did captivate an era onto canvas and same as you, the matchstick men song reminds me fondly of my Youth! thanks once again :)

Great video, and great historical summary of the man and the artist. I hope to go to hos museum when we visit Manchester in 2 weeks time. Btw,at the end when you were in the cemetary, the grave w the pointed stone as you put it it's called a obelisk. You prob already know that, just thought I d highlight that.
Thank you for that documentary, I grew up listening to that song about him, it was very interesting and informative. I really enjoyed watching. Thanks once again. 👍
Outstanding documentary. Brilliantly put together, educational and informative. Being born and brought up in Salford and later living in Glossop I could relate to much of this. Heartfelt and genuine.
Wow very informative of the life and legend Lowery was he certainly inpired so many people. Remember having to base some work around him at college many moons ago. Fantastic documentary, Well done. x
Thanks a lot ! I’ve always had a soft spot for Lowry. I liked his character and his artwork as it was totally different to the rest. May he rest in Peace 🙌🏼 take care Yvonne and thanks for the kind words
I've always liked Lowrys paintings, so I was happy to do school work on him with my boys during the lockdown. Wow! What a fantastic documentary on the great man. I didn't expect a UA-cam video in the afternoon to be so emotional Thanks for sharing this.

Heard Lowry say in another document that he didn't like the modern buildings. He was really about people. He had great sympathy for people and their suffering
@kambrose1549 He did. As most people who have hard lives, themselves do and it's clear that he had his fair share of suffering. I think that's also why he refused honours from the Queen on more than one occasion! It is said that he didn't want to change his name, but I think there was a little more to it than that. A great man, a man of substance, for sure. Rest in peace, kind sir !! 🙏
Not sure I can add anything to the comments below...(but you know me I’ll try, lol) Absolute Diamond piece of work Mr. 🐒. So atmospheric, emotional and beautiful cinematography. Southern Cemetery in the Autumn was beautiful as was the whole thing. You should be so proud of what you have produced here, Outstanding ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I grew up here this documentary made me cry for a long lost time . Your question. Would he paint Salford keys the new Salford the answer would be no there is no character nothing to paint. I think like me he would appreciate the effort. This was well done. Than you.
A fantastic piece of work, extremely well put together. You should be very proud of this! I live very close to a Lowry location in Middleton...24 steps. He painted the steps in the early 1960's for TV presenter Bob Smithies and named the painting 'Old Church and Steps'. The painting is well known for a five legged dog in the foreground! Keep up the great video content and the refreshing way you are presenting the videos :)

How beautiful that people have left their art brushes at his graveside. That really touched me.
Great video thanks.

@@daftmonkey7296 It was an excellent first go. The only possible criticism I could make is, beware of going to black screen... A couple of times, I thought the video had finished... almost clicked out before checking.
Brilliant insight. My grandparents came from Salford. Amazing history

Wow 😮 DM once again a marvelous documentary excellently done, kept me glued to the screen. You brought Mr Lowry back to life, and explained his artwork so beautifully. Good for you DM. Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you so much Shirley! Really glad you enjoyed this! It was a pleasure to make!

Thank you.
Found you while looking up lowry. I think you did a great job pal, take a bow..
Thank you very much David, that means a lot mate. Really glad you enjoyed it! Take care mate and have a great 2021 👍🏼🐒
Such a wonderful insight into his life.

Good to see your view of L.S.Lowry.
SpooKingdom thank you so much for watching 👍🏼
Brilliant, it's taken me a year to get around to watching this. 🙄
I'm also a big fan of his, when I was little it was said that he visited his niece just up the road from us in Gatley.
