Daughter just got a rubik's cube for Christmas. I told her about watching That's Incredible when I was a kid in the 80"s and how fast kids were at beating it. Still blows me away to this day.
Back in 1982 2nd Regional Cube-A-Thon, I was there and one of the 8 finalist and witness David Maez solved the cube in 20.49 seconds at San Mateo Fashion Island Mall in CA, which now closed.
David was such a challenge! And yes, his long fingers had moves I had and have to this day never seen. I watched him in practice the night before filming and he dropped a cube mid-solve. It rolled under a table and he picked it back up and finished - all in less than 20 seconds. Amazing.
That's awesome. I loved his story. I had the entire episode at one time on an old betamax tape, which is how I got my segment off. Haven't seen the tape in years. If for some reason I ever find it in storage, I would be happy to get it to you. Not sure what kind of shape it would be in after 35 years.
I would much appreciate it. He has passed so it would be a joy to have. Thanks ever so much for posting what you had. It was wonderful seeing him again and my mom.
OMG 😂 …they had nothing better to do so… "hey I got it! you know that kid in the motorized wheelchair. Yeah? Let's make that illegal! Great idea! That beats sitting around in City-hall doing nothing"

Was routing for David… 1982 and he had really nice finger tricks for an original Rubik’s cube.

This was my favorite show when I was a kid.
One of my dads greatest friends is Dave Maes! He told me about him and his world record when I got into speedcubing
So many memories thank you!
I went to school with Dave Allen. Class act!!
The best part for me was when I settled into my dorm at college, I found out that two of these finalists lived in my dorm.
now its like 10 seconds...lol
The current record is 3.47 seconds. 😏

Hi, I am wondering if you have the full episode.
No. Sure wish I did.
Thanks for replying. The boy in the wheelchair is my brother. We have been searching for this episode for quite some time.
