- In this video I will show you how to replace and upgrade the suspension on your vehicle with a suspension lift from Rough Country. Today we will be installing the rear suspension lift for the first part of this series. This process is very similar to other vehicle models but today I will show you how to do it on a Jeep Cherokee XJ. I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish by removing the old suspension and installing the new. If you have any questions that the video does not cover make sure to leave them below.

Super well done video. Really appreciate how you take it step by step. You’re also really articulate. Videos like this give me the inspiration and encouragement to tackle jobs with my Jeep. Thank you!
Agree 💯
Just lifted my XJ using your videos. Thanks Bro, couldn't have done it without them 😎👍
One of the clearest and best videos like this that I’ve seen. Very well done man! I have a 98 XJ and have bought the very tools you’re using. So this landed right in my ‘backyard’, and I’m ready get after it now! Thanks for doing these!
So how did it go?
I've had this same lift on my 98 for 5 years. With the n2's the shocks finally went out over the summer . But the rest has lasted built it for a tool hauler for work. Great video ! Rust belt : Maine
I used my MAP Gas torch a lot for the leafs. You can heat up the bolts going through the hanger. Trust me you put the flame on the bolt head and get it nice and hot, the heat will make it through the threads.
Anybody reading this that will try, your bushing WILL smoke pretty bad in the process. Use common sense please and heat it in intervals.
Great video btw 🤝
I just ordered my RC 3" lift kit and the misc parts you recommended. Can't wait to get started.
Great instructional video
Excellent video. Makes the task of taking this on way less daunting. Thank you
Going to be doing this soon, great video. I like the included links to all the products used, makes purchasing much easier.
if you take the rear bumper off, in the slot where the trailer hitch strips go you can see the rear of the shackle bolts. got up there with a map/oxy torch and they came out like butter
I spy echo landscape trimmers & shears 😎 that's how I fund all this fun..
Yes!! New video, great job man!!
A fine video on installation! I had to lower my transfer case to eliminate a vibration following my 3-1/4"(actual) Old Man Emu lift. However, the Australian steel holds up on our California rocky trails which are steep enough to require low range to climb with stock 3.55 gears.
Great video! Very helpful. Thank you for not glossing over the specifics like hardware size for the non- master mechanics like me. 😆👍🏻
Very informative and direct. Thank you for sharing this
Forgot to mention, awesome 👌 video.
Job well done and explained well too thanks for the details on removal and installation
Good job! Very informative and to the point. Thank you!
My problem is my Dana 44 is under slung and I need the brackets to mount it under the springs. That's 4 or 5" lift alone. Dandahermit
Dang, the decal link is broken...
Looking forward to part 2. My 01 XJ turned into a project so since I'm replacing the motor this week I figure go balls to the wall and upgrade upgrade upgrade. I've watched lots of vids and this channel is BY FAR my favorite. Keep it up man!
Thanks for letting me know the link didn't work! I updated the description so it should work now. Glad you liked the video! They all turn into projects that never end lol

New motor kick ass?
This is a good video. I had a zone 3" lift put on a few years ago and got some 30" yoko geo15 put on and it's been a lot more fun. I'm still needing to replace the front control arms so I'll see how that affects the way it handles.
Awesome video!! I personally am going with Iron Rock OffRoad Long Arm with OTK Steering.
The Chris fix of jeeps
Rubicon express is where it’s at for suspension
if you wanna be real tho BDS is even better
@@kieronicsmoke true
In my opinion Iron Rock OffRoad is a lot better then Rubicon Express.
Are you finding a Rubicon Express lift for $400 though?
excellent work Austin.
nice ! I'm real happy with my rc 3" . mines super clean , from pa yet ...
I got new leaf spring bolts at the stealership.
You got a shop?? awesome dude.
Lol I wish, just used my bosses shop for the install.
Keep going great videos
So RC cheaped out on sending you their shackle relocation brackets? Anyways, awesome video!!
I didn't opt for those since this Jeep is mostly a daily driver.
Excellent video for XJ rear lift kit install. - Parts places, like Quadratec and others, list their rear leaf spring replacements for Cherokee XJ with the description that they are for XJ with 0 to 3" lift kits. Question: So is the same leaf spring used for an XJ with no lift kit as well as one with a 3" lift kit? If so, besides the shocks - what gives the rear it's 3" lift if not the leaf springs too?
They might just be saying that the leaf spring is more HD than stock and can vary in additional lift, depending on how the Jeep is loaded or if it's used for towing. I would stick with lift specific springs that will advertise a specific lift height. Leafs or leaf springs shackle or a combination of both will adjust ride height.
Hey! Can i take a leaf out of a rough country 3" lift leaf spring, and use it at stock height? I bought the kit and a bunch of stuff before i learned how awful roughcountry is, as a company and as people.
Great video
That rig has a lot of rust. My 87 MJ ( metric ton) doesn't t have a spot of rust anywhere cept a spot where some paint got chipped off some light . surface rust.
Is it possible to put leafs in backwards? I noticed the + and - on each side. Just had this kit installed in my XJ and the - was installed on the opposite side you had it installed. Thank you!
It is possible. The larger bushing should always be facing forward.
Excellent video ++
Yeahhhh new video!
Thanks - weighing doing one of these jobs myself. Matt the the rescue tow guy said at one point to remove sway bars. What are the pros and cons of having/removing the sway bars and what happens on the freeway?
With sway bars disconnected while off-road it gives you an advantage of better articulation in your axles. It helps make sure that all the tires are on the ground to get the most amount of traction possible. As as for having them disconnected while driving on the highway, it leads to having body roll and is noticeable on turns.
Man I'd really like to have some help like that with my 2000 XJ and that's exactly what I'm wanting to do is a 3 inch lift
Mines red just like yours and rust free inside and out and top to bottom
You just got a sub out of me man keep up the great work
I have a set of 31s on 15 inch wheels and I'd like to have the wheels you have
What type of tires and wheels and what condition are they in? Also where are you from?
@@OutJeeping I cant remember the name of tire but I have the wrangler ravine 15×8 rim...I'm dring on 31s and want to take the off
I have 5 matching wheels and one hole one rim I had to drill the lug nut off but I hane an exact rim to match....I like ur rims....the 31s are about 60% tread
Gotcha, I may just being going with the route of buying all brand new wheels and tires but if you want my old wheels and tires I can sell them to you for cheap.
@@OutJeeping yeah I'd like to have then if it's not to much and you dont live to far away lol...I have a set of jeep wrangler Ravine wheels with 31s on them now and I dont like them due to no lift...and I'm in Ohio prob about 20 miles south of Columbus
Did the rough country leaf packs come with the degree shims on the bottom or did you add them?
They came with them.
Do you need extended brake lines if you’re going to flex out a 3” lift ?
For the rear yes, the front you could get away with the factory lines but I would recommend longer ones as well.
Did mine 2 days ago 2001 Cherrokee xj 60th yr anniversary model.
On bottom of shock I put greese on both sides , you only did one ?
I did both, just didn't film doing the second one.
Thanks
Donde consigo comprar este kit de 2 pulgadas para xj ...gracias
What do you do if your bolt is seized on the front shackles?
You would need to cut out the bolt with a sawzall.
Did the lift affect the drive shafts angles sufficiently to cause vibration ? if so, did you do something to correct the issue? and if so, what exactly?
Thanks.

Excellent content, subbed. Thank you!
That awesome! How can I get Rough Country to sponsor me on my jeep build? I have been using their products on my channel for a while now, and I really like their products, but I don't know
How to get the sponsor ship...
Dm me on fb or insta.
@@OutJeeping I don't have an account on those, but do you have a work email i could use? Thanks!

@@OutJeeping ok sent!
Ok this is no good for me cause my Dana 44 is underslung. I just want my springs on top of the axle. It's an 87 Comanche.
Comanche suspension is different in the rear compared to the cherokee in the video. Should be very similar expect like you said the axle is mounted over the axle. Front suspension should be exactly the same though.
outjeeping
For as rusty as that xj is, I'm surprised you got the top shocks off without snapping anything
Lol I am too.
I was wondering if it was the same jeep in first few frames it was so shiny put it up on lift and boom
For the axle u bolts when you torque them, how do you lift up the Jeep if your using jack stands?
The jeep needs to be supported by the frame when installing new leaf springs.
@@OutJeeping ok so support the jeep on the frame and let the axle fall lower to the floor?
I read your first comment wrong. Are you just torquing the U-bolts or swapping in new leaf springs and then torquing them down?
@@OutJeeping new leafs springs and torturing them down, but I don't have a lift to raise the Jeep. It would be on jack stands
hope you address that rust, lol
Later videos do
this looks like my kee
Out jeeping I like you because head liner vids. I hate you because I'm not good enough to install an alternate cooler for my trans and you made me dream that big.
Nice video, but way too many commercials.
Yeah it sucks but that's how I make revenue.
Why does everyone five the runn around on a good lift kit fuck id spend more money on the a shifty 3 inch lift kit than i did buying the jeep lol. I mean don't get me wrong I've got those goals but lord have mercy
Why are you putting so much work into a rusted Jeep?
No clue, I ask myself the same question. But I do got plans to fix the rust on it soon.
Why did you want the butthole of suspension world to be installed on your jeep? 🤦♂️
They sent it to him for free..😁😁
Because I love all the butt hurt comments people will make
I went with rc cause a friend with 3 jeeps who wheels tons harder than I do swears by em ...
Don't use anything Rough Country, your wasting your time and money. You'll be replacing everything before the years up. By the way, the sway bars go in the trash, not needed. For that baby lift you should of went OME and been done with it
He got the lift kit for free..😁😁
@@danhambrick6331 sell it and buy a real lift. Unless you love replacing parts all the time
I plan to display as much lift brands as well as other products and accessories from multiple manufacturers on this channel. I am well aware that there are better brand lifts you can get depending on your needs. And no the front sway bar stays on for this jeep, I am not looking to do any serious offroading with this jeep.
friend you talk a lot too much dialogue and that's boring
Thanks for the feedback
