  • Australian Defence Force personnel across Australia and around the world joined the country to pause for one minute’s silence at 11am on Remembrance Day 2016 to remember those who died or suffered in Australia’s cause in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The Governor-General of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove (Retd), AK, MC, and the Prime Minister of Australia, The Honourable Malcolm Turnbull, MP, joined Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, AC, Chief of the Defence Force, and other dignitaries at the Australian War Memorial for the national ceremony. Wherever ADF personnel are serving around Australia and overseas, Remembrance Day services are held to ensure we remember those killed in the First World War and to honour those service women and men who have served ever since. Around 2240 ADF personnel are currently deployed on operations, continuing the Anzac tradition of serving Australia’s national interests overseas. Remembrance Day 2016 marks the 98th anniversary of the 11am silencing of the guns on 11 November 1918 to observe the Armistice to end the First World War. Following the Armistice, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month attained a special significance in the post-First World War years and that tradition continues today.
