Follow along as we work the concrete pipe industry on the East Coast HO Exhibitors Society model train layout with my customized CSX GP39-2 #4310 in charge of a short train.
The industry was modeled by ECHOES president Rick Diaz. It represents the Rinker Materials Hydro Conduit manufacturing facility in Medley, FL - these large concrete drainage pipe modules were among the variety of loads FEC shipped on their unit rock trains when the construction business peaked in the early 2000s. The drainage pipe arrangements were custom-modeled by RIck in time for the recent display of the model railroad layout in early June 2024. They primarily use Tichy Train Group parts.
Commodities like these are really cool, and as modern as they are in principle, these are indeed reminiscent of the "good old days" of the 2000s, my formative days in getting acquainted with the railfan hobby. Even in South Florida, there was simply a lot more to see then than there is now. Hopefully, FEC will one day restore shipment of unique commodities like this.
The GP39-2 is an updated Atlas Trainman model with Loksound 5 DCC, a Scale Sound Systems speaker, Decoder Buddy, custom-wired LEDs, and roadnumber-specific details such as a high nose logo, Helvetica number boards, and the proper A/C and PTC setup.

Very cool industry idea. Something that's pretty common in the world yet you don't see on layouts often. There are a lot of interesting load possibilities too.

    It's nice as a D&H fan to see a former D&H GP39 doing the work. 4310 is EX D&H 7402

Added ops note. Since the train was moving back to the yard on the main, proto would have an EOT or flag in the trailing coupler. One company makes HO dummy EOTs and flags for this purpose. Slips right into a Kadee.

tolga,... great stuff as usual. i have recently installed the same crane as you have in this video but it remains unpainted. after seeing yours, mine will be yellow, too !!! thank you for that !! also, prototypically, how would the rr's really transport such almost "top heavy" loads ? tie-downs for sure with speed restrictions for the switcher if loaded in this manner ( i.e on their side)... it would seem to me they would be placed on the flatcar laying on their top or bottom edges as even cribbing under each piece, when laying on their side as you have them, would not be enough to stop the inertial (i.e. stored ) energy forward if a quick stop was needed. you did a really nice job, i must say !!! i have actually seen drainage pipes like this delivered to the plant i retired from that were loaded into hoppers that looked like they were previously used in scrap metal transport !!! they were picked out of the hoppers using standard h&r (i.e.osha) requirements !! we love your work, tolga.. please keep the videos comming... oh, yes, LETS GO PANTHERS !!! from western ny state !!!

Thanks Dennis! Really cool! Yes the cars will likely be secured somehow, the pipes were straddled and stacked two high. Train was still able to travel track speed, probably with a 45-50mph restriction like regular bulkhead flats. And yes, Go Panthers!
