I've never read Thomas Hardy, but after looking up a synopsis of Tess of the Dubervilles, him knowing that about her explains a lot. She is super into his dom behavior from the start, which he picked up on, then confirmed by sending her the book and guaging her reaction. It's amazing just how thorough he is about ensuring she wants him to act that way, before doing so. Of course, the movie is a fantasy and in real life people don't read minds so well, but since this was originally a story about a mind reading vampire, it makes sense. Instead of reading minds, Christian uses his body language skills combined with coded literature references he knew she would understand in order to act as the perfect man in her eyes. It's not until the very end that he actually let's himself be himself in front of her, which she rejected, sending him into a dark night of the soul of transformation. This movie is so layered.

I remember when this movie came out, everyone was crazy about it so I kind of ''ran away'' from it because it was trending.
Honestly, now that I've seen it a couple times and REALLY paid attention to the details, I can honestly say it's a great movie. Certainly one of the best I've seen when it comes to ''fantasy romance''.

If anything taken from this is the the emotions involved in the way he looked at her and the way she looked at him. That in on its own is powerful.. Starting a good relationship from the start like this can be so beautiful as long as it goes in a overall healthy direction.

The acting is really good here.
I think she fell in love right after she tripped, was on her hands and knees and looking up at him. That might have struck him deep as well. It was after that he started trying to recover and attempt to put some distance up between them by providing answers about control and no heart....trying to recover his "strength", independence and the lifestyle he's learned...because he could feel himself falling and losing control of the life he'd so carefully cultivated. When she puts the pencil in her mouth and bites her lip, a psychological sign of desire, he pivots from trying to distance himself to engaging. When she comments with the insight that she doesn't believe that anyone really knows him well, his curiosity is piqued, and it is the beginning of an emotional connection. How, he must have wondered, could she have an insight like that of something which he's been successfully hiding from the world for so long...and been bold enough to mention it. She is equally struck to the quick when he asked about her motivation to go into English Literature with knowledge and insight into something she's been passionate about for years.
Now that I rewatch the trailer...she did such a good job as Ana. Literally, the perfect Anastasia
Did anyone notice on "Fifty Grey Darker" that when she was in the office and she got the promotion she gave us the line from "her real mother "Melanie Griffin" who was nominated for "Working Girl" who said to the office assistant that Anastasia said to her co-worker, "I don't expect you to get coffee for me unless you are getting some for yourself and the rest we'll just take it as we go along?" I picked up on that as soon as she said it. Reminded me of the ending to "Working Girl." Which was a terrific movie to watch. Loved that movie with her mom. I love is her beautiful grandma, "Tippi Hedren who was my ideal classic beauty. Especially with Sean Connery in "Marnie." What a pair they made in that movie.
