Linus: "Luke we've talked about this. you're preasuring me on-air"
Also Linus: "Hey honey, I'm calling you from the WAN show. I need $50k for meme stock."
A suggestion for the WAN show, consider getting someone else to curate the merch messages. If you’re not already planning this.
My primary motivation for watching the WAN show to see Linus and Luke’s reactions/ opinions.
With one of you curating messages I feel like you don’t have the same opportunity to be in the moment and share opinions.
But don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy you guys answering specific questions from viewers, it’s a great addition to the show.
Good shout!
Good idea
^Agreed
fair criticism. it is a tiny bit distracting from the actual coverage and opinions.
DJ Khaled syndrome
I've been watching LTT and WAN for about 8 years now. At this point it feels like every WAN show is 50% talking about upcoming merch and 30% talking about "companies aren't your friend". Seriously feels like every episode is the same.
I still enjoy it but would love to see more stuff about a variety of tech. I loved seeing Linus show the Aya device and it'd be great to see both of them showing tech they've been using each week and talking about what they like/don't like.
dont hate the player hate the game (world) we are in
Been binge watching these, nice to catch a fresh episode
Many asked for detailed merch message in the last few stamps, I don't do it since they're 1-2 minutes and change a lot but I did mention key points of it.

Fun fact, in Chinese, some elements on the periodic table was pronounced similarly to the English pronunciation of abbreviated forms of elements. Na being na, Li being li, F being fu etc. Ti ended up to being 钛(ti), exactly how Nvidia now officially call it. Not sure if this is due to the origin of certain people in Nvidia(Jensen Huang) or because of legal issues discussed in the video
Probably more to appeal to that Market but interesting though!
Them pronouncing their cards as "TIE" rather than "TI" more seems like a reason for people to talk about their product. Any publicity is good publicity I guess.
Tbf - one letter is lower case. It surprised me and i find it jarring to hear it as "Ti", but i guess it makes sense since it isnt "T.I." or even "TI". Still, i prefer pronouncing it as "tee ai"
@@dandiaz19934 The reason for Ti is that it's meant to be short for titanium, which, in marketing speak at least, implies it's a sturdier, stronger product than it's non-Ti counterpart. That was Nvidia's reasoning for it in the first place.
On the periodic table, do you pronounce every element syllabically? No. You don't say "nah" or "nay" for Na or sodium. You don't say "al" or "ale" for Al, or aluminum. You say each letter.
The only thing I got from their own SVP pronouncing it like it's a garment piece, is that either he's so far up his own ass that he doesn't know how it's pronounced by basically everyone else, or the more likely one; that he doesn't give a shit how it's pronounced, and he knows it's gonna sell out anyway, so he can call it whatever the hell he wants to call it. He could've called it the GeEeForsay R-Tix Three Thousand & Eight/Seven/Nine Zero Tee, and it'll still sell out immediately.
@@dandiaz19934 Ti isn't "Tie" either. It is Tih. So you should be just as surprised and jarred to hear it as Tie.
@@HalenShredder
Titanium in Chinese is 鈦 which is pronounced (Tài).
So it is literally correct both ways, just depending on how you translate it.
Do people realize there are more languages than phonetic American English?
@@felicityc First, that was a genuinely informative piece of information, so thank you! Second, I checked the Nvidia CN website, in Chinese, and they actually still name the card in English "Geforce RTX 3080 Ti". They have chosen not to translate it into Chinese using the word for titanium or any other word. As Nvidia is an American company that operates in English, it's understandable that they have decided to use English phonetics for their product names globally. Still, it's always good to be reminded about different perspectives and languages, so much obliged. 👍
LTT should make an RTX 3090 themed tie. I mean seriously, Just take a regular tie and print a graphic card on it. New merch.
The ti discussion is hilarious considering Linus says jif. Q
Watching the WAN is now part of my Saturday routine (timezone GMT+11) and I find it useful to hear the context of the week's videos produced by LMG

I've been doing the same thing for almost a year now! :)
Luke's face when he said Wifi Mesh hahaha

Funny thing about the QD video. I saw genuine enjoyment from Linus and one of the most optimistic upcoming product launches in years. People got mad at me for pointing it out and said dumb things like "Sponsored. Fake hype." Linus not knowing its sponsored just proves that toxic sentiment to be wrong.
I think that the main issue was that it wasn’t clearly stated that he was talking about Samsung Display and that it was a display technology that any manufacturer can implement in their TVs in the same way as everyone got their OLED display from LG. Everyone is hyped about the display technology, but not everyone (including me) likes Samsung’s color processing.
Well if it's sponsored, it can't be that good, right?
Yep, I liked it also... wasn't fake hype.
Nowadays, if you talk about any brand it's shilling for that brand.
Linus didn't see it first hand.
They pronounce it Tie to make reviewers concentrate/argue about how to say it, rather than reviewers talking about NVIDIA coming out with a 3090Ti and 3050 and the 2060 to sell to scalpers and miners rather than regular consumers. Money.

_the purpose of _*_intentionally_*_ pronouncing it "tie"_
Ended up looking up a bunch of Nvidia Announcement videos from over the past decade to see how they pronounce Ti...... I'm not sure they actually know...
Most videos pronounced the letters individually like most of us do - T I, however in some videos (but not many), they did actually pronounce it 'Tie'. To add further confusion to this, I even found one video (GTX 650 Ti FAQ Response video) where in two sentences, the same person pronounces it BOTH ways.
I've heard ideas that they do it both ways deliberately as either to troll people or as a marketing ploy, and now I refuse to believe otherwise
Are we sure this isn't a translation issue? Like the obviousness may not be as true for the Chinese manufacturers and their corporate ilk than the western corporates, and there ends up being disagreements within the supply chain but only because languages tend to treat abbreviations differently.
For instance:
Titanium in Chinese (simplf.) is literally 钛. This is pronounced.... tai.
So In Chinese (tai) is clearly correct, while when considering it as an English/western component of the table of elements, it's T. I., since a tie are spaceships in star wars, not titanium.
@@felicityc But most people in China/Taiwan do pronounce TI separately, it's just Nvidia being inconsistent.
nVidia released the first titanium cards in 2001 (ti200, ti300 and ti500) based on the nv20 architecture. Everybody called them t-i back then and we will always call them t-i.
Linus, as a new teacher in BC what is covered in schools has changed a loooooot since you went through the public school system. Financial literacy is now required ( part of the curriculum ) in almost every grade.
Thanks for putting the timestamps in the description - big improvement
Spend 25 seconds advertising a product. Pronounce the name wrong. Literally everyone talks about the product for only 25 seconds of advertisement. Genius marketing by Nvidia.
I just hate that Linus says "jif" because that's how the creator said it's the way but doesn't say Tie like nvidia wants to....
@@bootchoo96 I think it's because 'jif' is generally a singular person's creation with generally no prior version WHILE 'Ti' is based off an element that has been used for many many years prior to Nvidia's adoption
That's the logic per se, but idk based off habit I would simply use the good ol' T.I to refer to it with vendors, friends, and more since its simply not worth going in a tangent explaining it idk lol

That's an eye-opener for me, that's why I could buy the 3070 I bought last year - it's an (totally unnecessary) 3.5 slots wide monster of a card - which is not interesting for miners due to density concerns. Interesting.
Great show today guys!
When LTT does cables, it would be awesome if they made small USB C ends with a silicone jacket because that are super flexible and high temperature resistant for use with something like the Pinecil soldering iron. Pine makes one but only in red and has to ship from overseas and Anker has some new high end ones but they are expensive.
For the question about LTTWB and LN2 in it: Steve already had it used on stage once or twice. It is okayish, unless you're willing to close the lid on it - that will give you a really bad time experience. Don't use LTTWB to store or transport LN2 at any costs. For pouring it is fine, for storing it is a no-no.
Jayz2Cents uses it for pouring LN2 as well and it's been fine from what can be seen on camera. Go check out his gpu overclocking videos for it
When can we look forward to seeing a 3090 tie on the LTT store? It'd go great with the party shirt!
Stoichiometry is excellent practice for dimensional analysis, which is super valuable for technical skills.
57:57 Glad you've talked about vr, even though it was for a bit.
For me the disconnect that has always stood between “media reviewers” and myself was that you cannot get enough processing power as a “Special effects” artist. Rendering on a Pentium 1 compared to dual Xeon is so liberating.
Personally it was worth spending $13,000 in 2011 on a workstation. The fully kitted out machine was $10k each cpu and $15k for 128gig Ram.
Yeah I'm watching this right now while he's talking about not spending $500 on a CPU... I bought a 5950X and while it is a huge step up for the engineering work I do, I realize now that my next one will be a thread ripper. Whenever they release the next generation thread ripper I'm just going to jump up to there.
@@TravisFabel but these are all professional usecases - for personal computing that kind of power is overkill to the limit.
Also while processing power is great for engineering tasks IO bottlenecks will be more problematic for creative work - do focus on high speed peripherals and top motherboards
@@aravindpallippara1577 Well, yes, that's exactly what he was saying. Not that they're wrong (they're absolutely correct when it comes to the value argument for average consumers), but that for professional work the costs are justified.
And yes, if you were to buy top-of-the-line CPUs and RAM but cheap out on your other components, that would be a complete waste of money.

Linus you mentioned Mercury for the liquid metal cooled PC, but what about other low melting temp metals? I'd really love to see how it would go to have a liquid metal cooled PC! Maybe trying Galinstan alloy (the stuff in conductonaut liquid metal) as it's melting point is -19c-11c dependant on specific alloy obtained, and a 1300c boiling point + 10^-8 torr @500c vapour pressure.
Using the tubing, pump, and other loop components with a coated in gallium oxide should prevent the Galinstan from adhering/wetting everything it touched in the loop for the best flow. Also aluminum, copper, and brass are the most affected by the natural corrosiveness of and embrittlement from Galinstan . They'd get either eaten or end up so brittle the internal pressure would cause a rupture in the loop spraying liquid metal everywhere. You'd be better off on sticking with glass, stainless steels (like ss316), nickel-chromium alloys, ABS, acrylic, Buna N, nylon, PVC, and Teflon for any of the loop components as anything else might not make it to the end of the shoot.
At the very least you could have an excuse to get a big project going for the workshop and new labs areas collaborating together for a crazy video idea. If people love the absurdness of it all enough, then you could toss a couple merch ideas from it like "We Galin-stan the liquid metal PC-1000!" get yours now on LTT store. Just wanting to yeet those ideas out there. Cheers!
About education and topics covered in high school: The alternative is that students will have to decide at like 14 what career path they want to follow so they can learn the required topics and if they have a change of mind they will be almost irrecoverably behind. So basically you could shorten high school by like 2 years and send them to college at 15?
Or you could give everybody a broad basic education so they can make an educated decision about their career later.
Yeah, as someone working towards becoming a teacher, and recently out of the secondary school system, I wholeheartedly disagree with Linus' take. Having a hyper-specific stream for every "type" of student is super harmful to their growth and capacity to learn. Within high school alone, I changed what I thought I wanted my career path to be many times: Family Physician, Mechanic, Massage Therapist, Speech Therapist, Teacher, etc. Should I have fallen into a hyper-specific stream for any of these things, it would have been absolutely detrimental to my education and life going forward. My ADHD brain would have loved to have only classes on what I loved, but I know that it would have been awful for me.
Not to mention it's also great exercise for the brain. More science education will only ever be a net positive to society.
In short: nVidia is likely publicly avoiding acknowledging the "Tee-Eye" due to Texas Instruments, but they want to acknowledge that "Ti" is meant to be the periodic table identifier for Titanium. They could just publicly say, "Titanium" then instead. Calling it "Tie" just makes them sound stupid or tone-deaf to the vast public media regarding their own products.

It's me. I'm the guy who spends 500+ on a flagship CPU when I do upgrade. That said it's a dumb value preposition for most people and I always guide people towards cheaper parts for most use cases.
I gotta say, the Q&A part got 100 times harder to get through since the switch to merch messages. While I applaud the initial intentions behind the switch, it turns that part of the show into 75% merch talk. I get that creator warehouse is an important part of your business you like to highlight, but this is starting to significantly hurt the quality of the podcast. Please have a person filter the messages for the actual relevant questions. Sure, throw in a merch question or two, but please focus more on tech again. I gave it a few weeks to see if it finds a better groove, but I will probably just skip the last third of the show for the time being.
Yeah seriously can't stand these 2-3hr episodes. Half of it is now merch/"superchat" filler now.
I don’t mind it too much (though I wish the show was closer to an hour again) though I’m tired of messages that are “when is X back in stock”, “are we getting ”, etc. Guys the answer is always “they’re stuck in the port” and “no” respectively.
Highly recommend the Yamaha MusicCast. The quality is baller and you can cast so easily
Somebody in my past did tell me the same thing about moles and calculations. I find the sentiment that it is the exact opposite for me. I use stoichiometry multiple times during the work day. I also became a Chemistry teacher LOL.
If commissions on phone plans are as good as Linus says they are, that would explain why Radio Shack went into them in such a big way...
Same thing I though. Rip Radio Shack
@@uss_04 IF you ever needed a cable in a hurry or something else electronically obscure that was my spot.
The problem with the HDMI standard is that we become so used to blaming the customer, when people should just keep returning devices that don't have clear specifications features, until 2.1 means 2.1, and 2.2. means 2.2.
Yeah, hit them where it hurts. Also get the regulatory agencies involved, specially the European ones, that don’t seem to be lobbied as easily.
I had always been under the assumption that TI was short for Titan, not sure why they need to weaken it.
The fact you have dankpods on float plane is my biggest motivator to subscribe right now!
I know the WAN show is on friday after work, but you might wanna get someone to curate merch-messages for you, so you can go through the tech articles uninterrupted. Sorry to say but merch messages are beginning to ruin the Analysis and News part of the WAN show...
Honestly, just got confusing with the gtx 1650ti and 1650 super, I never remembered which was faster. Instead of Ti why don't they use a 5. Would make much more sense imo. So for an example, 3065 instead of 3060 ti. It gives a good indicator of performance as it's saying it's halfway between a 3060 and 3070
3091 for the 3090ti
There was a GTX465 back in the day. If I remember correctly you even could flash a GTX470 bios on it.
@@plaotin Was actually thinking of the gtx 295 when writing the comment
You: Making actual sense
USB, HDMI and WiFi powers that be: Uhh excuse me what?
What a great show to start off 2021 Gen 2a!
As someone with an allergy and always carrying around an epi-pen, more pockets in sweatpants is always appreciated.
On the education thing: I think it is important to teach at least the basics of things like chemistry and physics to everyone. Even if you will never use a molar mass ever again, I didn't know I wanted to do biology until I discovered that physics is too hard. Or that learning French and German is not fun. I dropped those classes as soon as I could, but everyone had to learn basics of everything. Prolonged and deeper exposure to a subject will give you a much better understanding of what you are actually good at.
is this show turning from WAN show to Merch Message show?
About the full liquid metal cooling, you could use gallium instead of mercury. you'd just have too keep it a bit warm at all times like only 30C. and its completly safe
Stoked to hear about Dankpods, getting close and closer to a collab XD
Many of us want GPUs at 250$ range. Even it is launched at 250$ , distributers will loot us (in india) and sell at 350$
Thats just taxes
Same in South Africa, it's now at the point where a high end GPU will cost me the same as two months' rent. And I live in a double storey 3 bedroom house in a nice neighborhood. Besides scalping and shortages etc. tech has just gotten very expensive and people from countries with low buying power just can't afford tech anymore.
I'm a web developer with three degrees, a bachelor's in Psych, Masters in I/O Psych and in IT.
I speak 5 languages, code in 8, play 4 musical instruments, and a few other things here and there, and I can confirm that I have never used anything that I learned in school in my field or life in general. Anything important I've learned, I taught myself through books, Pluralsight, UA-cam, other apps, etc., etc.
I can't speak for Canada, but the U.S. school system is garbage, and it can't be anything else when you try to standardize something that is inherently incredibly individualized.
"Ti" was a badge on a lot of cool cars for a long time, representing speed and performance. It kind of died out when "Turbo" became the coolest badge to have on a car. Interesting that both badges made it into Computers.
if you only sell 8 core 16 thread parts , thats all anyone can upgrade to . that's not what's happening , this is still on AM4 platform and you have the choice of any cpu from 2 core 4 thread, up to 16 core 32 thread. this is just another option .cache will help in many circumstances but isn't the be all end all. The frequency vs instructions per clock battle is a nutty one. the power budget of both cpus are drastically different and its a beautiful time .
When will PR departments learn that there is literally nothing more cringeworthy than trying to dictate how something 'should' be pronounced.
Precisely. All that says is "We fucked up our product name".
I nearly shat myself when luke made the Wi-Fi mesh joke 💀💀💀
I'm also seriously jazzed about a mid end build!
41:46 actually there is probably a large enough market of tech-illiterate customers who require physical locations or else they would change providers, coming from personal experience. my dad is a literal boomer who can't download an app by themselves, and has no idea how to search on the internet. as for autopayment, he just never does it even though he might as well. there's also a problem of replacing broken phones, cause if his phone were to break by say, leaving it in a pocket and tossing it in the laundry, he has no way of telling the provider he needs it replaced besides going somewhere in person.
in conclusion, there's absolutely a shrinking demand for in person locations, but as long as there's some, i doubt it would ever completely disappear from society. just might get super bougie and expensive...
There was an comment here. Now it's gone. Must have been mean. Sorry!
SO stoked to hear that dankpods is on floatplane now!
I'd be interested in a Merino Wool coat!!! Those are amazing! I only have merino wool socks and I love them! My only socks now, worth ~$13/pair!
I'm glad that the merch apect is working well for you guys becasue it enables so much of what we love about LTT but am I the only one who is started to be irked by how much it's talked about in recent shows?
Definitely not the only one. The merch must be crazy lucrative if it’s worth having this much disruption.
You're definitely not alone. The show is becoming one big LTT merch commercial. I'm 57 & I know they cater more to a younger audience but I have to admit, I'm not nearly as engaged with their content as I used to be. But, I'm sure for every old man they lose, they gain three younger people!
Getting called out as a shill for being too honest, that's just proof of how great the tech will be (probably).
i think it took the red and green team that long to get enough stock of fused off gpus . we still dont know if add in boards will be in any sort of decent supply.
What is the button you guys use to change scenes called?
I’ve heard cyclists and machinists pronounce it “tie.”
And in the automotive world
@@claytonbyrd6134 along with the vape and smoke worlds
Same here. In fact when when the GTX 550Ti came out, I really thought it was pronounced “tie” because I came from the cycling industry.
"Who's spending $500 on a cpu?" Australians who are perpetually screwed by exchanged rates, cheapest 3080 is around $2,500
I assume that difference is also reflected in earnings
That's a GPU, buddy
