So what does a Modem from 1983 look like? Can I use it in 2022?
A: It looks like a glorious hunk of metal!
    B: Absolutely I can! But should I?
Let me show you how this think looks like, and lets see it in action on my Windows 98 PC.

It was good to hear those old modem sounds again - thank you for that! One of my first modems was a Datel 2B - made by the equipment manufacturer of the British Post Office, who ran the telephone system in the 70s. This big steel box was painted beige and the modem consisted of a number of densely-populated cards that plugged into the backplane. During use, you could hear relays clicking within the modem and the front panel had jacks so you could monitor the line conditions. I wish that I still had that thing. I gutted it and turned it into a PC - what a silly thing to do! It was the 90s and the idea of repairing it simply did not occur to me.

Older equipment, most of the times, also used to include (at least) a basic diagram of the logic board. If the item is big enough, they used to have this on a label attached to the chassis. I don't have to say this, but it shows where the world headed during the past decades. Nowadays, even if a tiny IC is blown on a laptop, you might be at risk of losing your data (unless you thought about backing up beforehand), because it's difficult to know what the IC is doing, and even if you did, you have nowhere to source it from. I wouldn't be surprised that the manual you showed has this kind of PCB information in it.

I just put a Wi-Fi Retromodem in my Hayes smartmodem. It’s pretty cool even has the original dial and connect sounds!

My mikrotik router has a body of a beautiful piece of solid aluminum, and is meant to help conduct heat (passively cooled, 1.4ghz chip/s). Sometimes, they still make them like they used to!

Is there a way to test these old modems without having a standalone cisco router with another modem? I was wondering if there are any live dialup modems available

Hi. I saw one of your video on AWS app config. I wanted to know if we can store encrypted secrets on AWS app config service.

I would suggest you check out the service called AWS Secrets Manager! Or if you are looking for an open source solution - check out Hashicorp Vault
