Also, Jason Statham made some movies (I don't remember the names) where he played a character that would die, if his pulse got under a certain rate. So he had to run the entire time. I don't think they were very good. But it's a connection. EDIT: I only discussed this movie with someone, so I was just told it wasn't good. It may have been, I wouldn't know.
"behind my eyelids are islands of silence...." anyone else remember that? (migraine) he's stuck on an island of silence but his pet cheetah brings music to the silence
This one reminds me of a tweet from Tyler after the final deadline for Trench’s completion came about. He said if it were up to him, he’d stay there forever working on it. This and the endless demands from the Clique for the hiatus to end makes me think this one is about Tyler being rushed at his music and that’s stopping him making it better for the Clique and himself. This inner conflict is then giving him writer’s block so he challenged it with this song. I think the Pet Cheetah is the part of him people want him to be.
i think that the cheetah was chosen for a specific reason. while being critically endangered in the wild, baby cheetahs are taken away from their mothers to be sold off as pets. few even make it to that point. It's obviously a traumatising experience for the kittens and it's obviously compketely against their nature. being but in a basement, locked up, bathed, being "faster in the studio than on his feet". the pet cheetah is suffering. hinting that suffering is tylers inspiration orbthat the pressure of having to write more and more good songs is creating terrible suffering. he is locked up in his basement just like the pet cheetah is. also the cheetah is still a wild animal. locked up together with tyler, it could snap any time, obviously putting tyler at risk while he is writing and isolating himself.
1- How in earth did you upload these two videos this fast? 😅 2- I thought that Smithereens was about Jenna too, it’s so cute ☺️ 3- I have a feeling that you listen to the album a little bit earlier than you should have 😜
Beans Oh yeah! I forgot about that, because I didn’t even read the lyrics so I don’t spoil anything for myself, but he could have analyzed the lyrics after just reading them indeed. Thank you ☺️
Man, I really wish high school English class was like this. I mean, I know there's standards and guidelines and the entire course can't be just discussing song lyrics lol but I wish my teacher would have given us a project like this at least once. A lot of song lyrics are so deep and meaningful and full of imagery and symbolism. It would make for a great English assignment. Thanks for making these tøp song explanations! I've been enjoying all of them!
i’ve had a couple classes in high school where we had to use songs. mainly ap english/literature. freshman year of lit, we had to breakdown 5 songs throughout the semester as we were learning how to read romeo & juliet. in my junior year of high school, we had to write an extensive essay on how a modern rap song of our choosing compares to macbeth by shakespeare. i chose semi-automatic by twenty one pilots!
The Pet Cheetah is the Clique. It has been raised by TJ, but it (We) is faster than he is. We always want more and we want it at an increasing pace. Writers block is a deadly thing when you have a pet cheetah and vultures always poised to strike. Always wanting to be fed.
Every time I click on one of these videos, I always expect him to have an English accent, and I’m always really surprised when he talks and he doesn’t. I could watch ten videos in a row and still have the same surprise every time. I have the memory of a goldfish.
I love your videos discussing Twenty-One Pilots lyrics. I am engrossed in the mystery of Trench and I really enjoy your take on the puzzle/mystery. I appreciate your detail on his writing from a "language/grammar" view point. As soon as I got my Trench album in the mail today I came right to you for the breakdown. Thank you. * side note: I would love to see you do a video breaking down "Morph" and "Leave the City".
New Twenty One Pilots Music? You know exactly where I’m headed 😂 thank you so much for making these videos, every time I feel like I need an in depth explanation I feel that your channel is always able to help.
Wow My favourite songs: Trench: pet cheetah, jumpsuit Blurryface: lane boy, polarize Vessel: migraine, holding on to you RaB: kitchen sink, be concerned Self-titled: Addict with a pen, trapdoor It’s so weird how my favourite songs include all of the song-writing ones
I just came across your video . Very interesting theory. As aTOP fan,it mostly makes sense. Seems to me that Tyler and Josh get somewhat annoyed when interviewers ask them superficial questions. In my opinion the depth of ToP is GENIUS! I would love to see you interview them to get a deeper perspective. I’m interested if you have other takes on their songs.
Wow, great explanation! Just thought I’d add that there is another meaning to “lose it.” It also means going crazy, losing your sanity or losing your cool. Lots of layers, I think, to that line.
As silly as it sounds - you've helped me open my mind to interpreting beautiful things such as song lyrics so much! I have connected with twenty one pilots so much recently, but there's still a lot I kiss because I am MUCH more about math and science and it's just hard for me. So thank you :)
i think by the cheetah making beats and the clique meaning a lot to him that Tyler or Josh would be metaphorically the cheetah and meaning that Tyler and Josh will make songs quicker and not have a year long hiatus
Guys also consider that Trench has been out since midnight in Australia (its 3pm) and it because of that it wouldn't be hard to get the songs or he could have heard the leaks.. thsts how he got videos out so quick.
I looked up Jason Statham. Here's what it said: "Typecast as the antihero, he is known for his action-thriller roles and portraying tough, irredeemable, and machiavellian characters." That might be unrelated to why Tyler wrote that, but i just thought it was interesting.
You would be an amazing therapist. Not being funny at all. Music and breaking down lyrics and the gaining an understanding of the meaning behind the songs has been such a powerful tool for me. It's something my uncle started doing with me when he noticed I was going down into a deep depression and stopped leaving my room except to go to work, later on he said he noticed I was becoming a recluse, sleeping 12+ hours and only leaving my room in the basement to use the bathroom or go to work and I'd become timid and "meek" just not my self at all and I remember laughing it off to not have to face what I was going through at the time. And I remember he nagged and nagged until I got out of bed and hung out one weekend, we jammed out listening to music and at the time he started pulling up older pearl jam and mother love bone, audioslave, alice in chains. All of these bands I grew up knowing all of the words to their songs but he did this same thing and broke down the meanings behind the music and next thing I knew I found myself passionate about something again. It was a great outlet I would have never thought of on my own.
Jason Statham has a movie where he has to run or he would die. The meaning Tyler is trying to get across is that Jason Statham representing his writing of music. Without the music running through him, he'll die.
I think it's fairly self-explanatory if I'm right it's about not glorifying but still recognizing suicide in the media obviously it goes more in depth but it could definitely use an explanation from the professor
Jason Statham was in Fast and Furious, and Cheetahs are fast and furious. So that's why I believe he named him that. I haven't seen the movie in a long time so I can't really give any deeper explanation tho.
I think that the contrast between the Cheetah being the fastest animal on land and Tyler saying "no, I move slow..", is representive of the fact that Tyler struggles with the pressure of putting more and more songs out to keep his fans happy but also with the pressure to write meaningful lyrics that his fans will enjoy and relate to, because he can't do both. The song writing process takes time especially to write lyrics like TØP does but in the business that they're in its also expected to put music out like a machine to keep your fans happy and coming back and Tyler is having issues deciding between the two. This could also relate to selling out because to put out music like a machine the music would become generic and that's something we know tyler wants to avoid. The pet cheetah represents the pressure to put out music fast because it's creating "beats" faster than Tyler can write lyrics for and pressuring him to write the lyrics for. While Tyler struggling to write the lyrics and saying the line "no, I move slow..", represents him wanting to be in control over his music and be able to continue writing lyrics at his own pace in his own way.
A lot of the lyrics connect to vessel like car radio, and house of gold. And chlorine also speaks of the colors in blurryface talking about like an old rebellion. Pet cheetah, as said in your video, talks about the Skeleton clique which connects to fairly local.
When Tyler said "No, I move slow" it reminded me of Slowtown from Regional At Best when he says "Hey hey wouldn't it be great great if we could just lay down and wake up in slowtown" idkw
I mean, as a writer with lyrics and quotes lying around AND a bunch of unfinished beats that don't go with any of those lyrics, I completely understand this.
For me, the name Neon Gravestones is another way Tyler is calling attention to the glorification of suicide, it's like all the neon signs advertising something, trying to grab your attention, but here is for the wrong reason, a gravestone shouldn't have a neon glow: "Our culture can treat a loss like it's a win and right before we turn on them we give them the highest of praise" Gosh I love this band so much!
It made me think of Slow Cheetah by Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is about viewing yourself as not really turning out right, the same way Tyler feels like the songs he’s trying to write aren’t turning out. Also, it may just be me, but I hear a lot of RHCP influences on this album, especially in the bass lines and the subtle funk beats
How the hell were u so fast😂😂 I was still in the middle of listening to the album and I got ur notifications I was like what?! Lol sorry but I had to finish the album and process and recover before I could watch this😭😂
I believe pet cheetah is PAUL MEANY! It's so clear to see that he helped Tyler in a lot of the songs. And that could be the reason why the click means so much to this "dude"... Tyler doesn't have to impress us, We're his pride!
I like pet cheetah because it doesn’t repeat at all compared to other songs in TRENCH where he goes after chorus and then back to pre chorus and then to chorus again I still LOVE TØP though
Here's a theory. What if the island Tyler mentions at the beginning of the song is the same island from Migraine? "Behind my eyelids are islands of violence. My mind shipwrecked, this is the only land my mind could find. I did not know it was such a violent island. Full of tidal waves, suicidal crazed lions. Their trying to eat me, blood running down their chin. Now I know that I could fight or I could let the lion win." Pet Cheetah:"I am on an island no-one to confine." And in Cut My Lip:"Lean on my pride. I'm a lion." So what if Tyler has been living on that island in his own head for a while and killed the lion to become the lion on that same island?
When I listen to tøp I feel like I’m entering a new realm, a realm that protects me, makes me feel safe. I never feel uncomfortable there, it’s my safe place. It makes me feel special, it makes me feel less depressed and, better about myself. I feel like, a person that is better with the world, if I don’t enter that realm I, feel depressed, I feel bad about myself. I feel horrible, I feel like I’ve fallen into a dark hole and can’t get out. I feel like the world is better without me in it, I just feel like a blurred picture that nobody can see. I feel I’m nonexistent.

Bo Rihenna leave the city totally did it for me😭😩

You would be an amazing therapist. Not being funny at all. Music and breaking down lyrics and the gaining an understanding of the meaning behind the songs has been such a powerful tool for me. For me, the name Neon Gravestones is another way Tyler is calling attention to the glorification of suicide, it's like all the neon signs advertising something, trying to grab your attention, but here is for the wrong reason, a gravestone shouldn't have a neon glow: "Our culture can treat a loss

It made me think of Slow Cheetah by Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is about viewing yourself as not really turning out right, the same way Tyler feels like the songs he’s trying to write aren’t turning out. He's also bald... Jason??
Also... nepotistic mindset?? Giving friends or family jobs, or helping?? Come ON
It's a lot of pressure for Paul to be accepted, maybe he was afraid people wouldn't like him, because the album is very different sounding in style.
