The orange G10 Charge is my 1st Leatherman. My neighbor, who I rescued with my motorcycle, I used my Ozark Trail Multiforce to take his battery out of his car and I took him to replace his battery for free from the store he bought it, bought me my 1st Leatherman. It was discontinued and I have used it for a few days but I am going to just buy another Leatherman, but most likely get a Wave, since I am impressed with the Charge, and just shelf queen this amazing tool. I love how it has a detention when you fully open the pliers.
I actually love how you pointed out that it's basically the best of both worlds, with the G10 having s30v blades with regular plier head without the stupid crimper
All 3 of my camo Charges (older model from REI, more recent model from REI with the changed handle pattern, and a model from BassPro) all have S30v bladesteel. Both REI models have black oxide tools, but the BassPro example has the standard stainless tools. I agree that BO tools would really work on the red G10 model. As for cost, REI members can wait till late March (est) and the 20% off coupon reduces the cost from $170 to $136, which becomes a little more reasonable. Excellent review btw.
Bought one of these at list price on Amazon (from Leatherman as seller). Inventory seems to get posted, then sold, then restocked. I wonder how many more of these Leatherman has to sell, since they're not on the Leatherman website. Anyway, I totally agree that the G10 version is a really great alternative to aluminum or titanium.
I totally agree with you about bright colours on a multi tool. I WANT my multi tool visible. Now if we can get flashlights in bright colours we would not be fumbling around at dusk. Have you tried the RAE sheath for the Surge? I like it for the Wave but the weight of the Surge concerns me. The RAE sheath may be the answer. I saw a camo potato masher at a discount store so I guess the camo appeal is greater than I can appreciate. The sing-a-long Justin Bieber toothbrush was passed on as well. Are my standards too high?
Lol, that was funny. I haven’t tried any of the RAE sheaths. I have actually been debating about whether or not to try them out. It seems that quite a few people really like them. Honestly, one of the reasons I really haven’t tried them is because I actually get down working on my side a lot, whether that be for welding or just changing the oil on the trucks. My sheaths get scratched up quite a bit. The fact that the RAE sheath is metal and it leaves the face of the tool exposed, makes me question whether that style of sheath would be right for me. I’m sure at some point I will pick one up to see for myself though.
TX Tool Crib Sounds like it may not be a good fit for you. I usually carry my Wave in the bib of my Carhartt overalls using the pocket clip when crawling around machinery. Anything attached to a belt becomes a snag point or painful when rolling around on your side. The bib of the overalls holds a multitool, flashlight. pocket screwdriver, pen magnet, and pencil nicely out of the way. Occidental makes a nice tool vest if you are constantly on and off forklifts which seem to grab tool belts with every move.
Ah, those wonderful bygone days when a Leatherman multitool was both small enough to carry comfortably in the pocket and affordable enough to actually use without being afraid of ruining a $160 investment. Gone, but notforgotten.
You have seen both in real hands ...plz help me decide should I buy an red one or an orange one I will be glad I am putting my 3 months salary and need to be cautious plz do suggest red or orange color
I have the new red scale model from REI. I really appreciated your video. Thanks. I have a question about a thin copper/brass disk that is found centered on the 14cm mark that protrudes slightly above the 14cm mark and then goes down into a curving track that is cut toward the center pivot of the pliers. Is this supposed to be there? Is it a "stopper" for other tools? Is it supposed to be sticking up from between the cm ruler and the red scale handle? Please advise. Thank you!
I believe you are referring to the bronze washers. Yes, they are supposed to be there. It minimizes the friction of the outer tools to open a bit more smoothly than it's Wave counterpart. It's part of what makes the Charge series a bit more premium.
Hey Kimmy, you can get the red one here www.rei.com/product/162813/leatherman-g10-charge-plus-red-special-edition-multi-tool?CAWELAID=120217890008151937&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=15877486840&CATCI=pla-430533617231&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C404_148384%7C1628130001%7Cnone%7C18ad3022-0d01-4cb7-834e-649339906360%7Cpla-430533617231&lsft=cm_mmc:PLA_Google_LIA%7C404_148384%7C1628130001%7Cnone%7C18ad3022-0d01-4cb7-834e-649339906360&kclid=18ad3022-0d01-4cb7-834e-649339906360&gclid=CjwKCAiApOvwBRBUEiwAcZGdGP_LZxM4N8xuP2465zZHS2RCVn6L2HHDJIdnt_LhdipoRpSGjZdTBBoC6tcQAvD_BwE
Also the steel is different in New replaceable wire cutter type. The old version was 154CM steel. The new version in theory are of 440c steel. I don't know why have changed the steel. Maybe for the cost, maybe 440c isa little less hard but also less fragile...
I give the Free series lots of hate and bad press online, but Leatherman earned my money on this one. Have the REI Red on the way. I usually don't even like red, anything in general, but that one looks very attractive to me. Had a Charge TTI long ago, got a huge blood blister second day with it and I was done with LM for many years. I guess time to try one again and keep my hand way back on the handles. Ratchet bit also sold me on trying again. Love the Spirit but after 8 or 9 years of daily carry and use, it is feeling dated.
I have a red one, these bad boys are about $450 NZ dollars over here, it's mental. Cheers for the excellent review tho, gave me confidence to purchase one, and it's now my perfect EDC!!
Sir did you watched the new G10 black version ( black oxide tools) Just came out like 2 weeks ago!!!! I own a Red one and is light compact and really useful. When I go out with the family is what I take with the Ainsworth Sheath. Amazing MT And of course my 110 Buck Slim Pro G10 handle. Super lighter and SV35N steel. What else to ask? Happy I am.
I just recently saw the black model. Where are they sold through? I looked at the site, but didn’t see them. Honestly, I have been working so much I have been a little out of touch with new releases lately.

Hi sir, great video. I wonder if you can answer me something, i have a Leatherman Charge+, but i broke the file, mi question is, do you know if i can put the blade exchanger of the surge instead of the file? as of that i can have even the file but more options to change the saw? i know that if this is possible i will have to take of the file to close because the blade exchanger plus the file or saw will be larger than mi Charge+, but is not big deal for me, i only need to know if the bale exchanger of the surge fits on the file´s place in my Charge+. Thanks a lot for your help
I don't honestly know. It may be able to be installed, but you wouldn't be able to carry the saw or file in the exchanger. They would be too long. They would have to be carried separately. I'm not entirely sure if the pivot pin is the same size, it might require a bushing to work properly. I would suggest getting on the multitool.org forum to ask. There are a lot of really knowledgeable people out there that may be able to help you out.
I don't know the answer to that one. I don't carry mine enough to give you an informed answer. You might check the multi tool forums, they might give you some insight into that question.
G10 is a polymer, a plastic. So it won't rub off. It will melt, but the benefit of it is the texture and the fact it won't be as cold in the winter, unlike any other metal leatherman. It's literally a plastic scale attached with screws, just like the titanium ones have a piece of titanium and the normal one being an anodized aluminium being affixed to the tool itself.
All right, i'm biting the bullet. I'd been wanting a Change + but don't like the fasteners, since I'd install an awl. Your review stopped me from buying the Tti;, the crimpers would be a pain. I do hospital repairs and maintenance, so often I have to wear scrubs, which means I'm very limited in what i can carry. Often i'm not wear work gloves when working in clinical areas, so grip is important. If Leatherman would make some bits in 300 series stainless, they could sell them to techs who work on or near MRI's. As it stands, Super Tools & Rebars are popular with them. This should take care of the jobs my Skeletool CX cannot, and the low weight is impressive. Thanks for you hard work!
If you like the Wave, your gonna love the new G10 Charge+ models. I really like the fact that they are combining the standard pliers with the S30V blades.
ablackprep actuallly, i have! I've autoclaved it before working on really sensitive equipment, or on the rare occasions when its contaminated. Normally this isn't necessary, as the room is cleaned before and after any repair. More commonly i run it through the ultrasonic, & occasionally the washer. Aven, Wera and Wiha make stainless tools for that reason, but often, i'm popping in to make a quick adjustment, so a leatherman works great. (I had another tech insist Victorinox was preferably because the polish made them easier to clean. I pointed out you can't disassemble them, either!) The biggest issue, at least where I've worked, is preventing the tool from getting grit and grease which could get transferred to whatever i'm working on.
TX Tool Crib i can't wait for it! S30v is so nice, even though I'm happy with 420hc. I'm also looking forward to the grippy texture, and a little bit of thermal insulation. I'd love a Surge with this setup. When i can wear it, that's still my favorite!
Pretty much on par with the US as far as price is concerned. They are just making us go through those two specific retailers here. Thanks for the info.
the only issue I had with the plastic Charge in comparison to the TTI was they were flexible and bendy as you pointed out. Wasn't worried about durability just the flex of the tool just the lack of rigidity compared to the tTi.
Almost a $1000 in leathermans on this video… and from the way you talk you have more. Possibly thousands of dollars on basically the same tool over and over.
