My boyfriend of 8 years became paralyzed 7 years ago and we always had a very difficult time getting onto the beach. I've had multiple men carry him down to the water bc they seen me having such a hard time, so to see this gamechanging hack is awesome. He don't ever want to go on the sand bc he don't want to make it difficult for me but he misses out on so much bc of it. Thank u for sharing!!! Love u guys!

I live in Canada, and there are some national parks where they have ramps specifically for this reason! They even have beach wheelchairs that are made to go on sand and in the water! I wish more places were as accessible as this

Our town has a couple of “Beach Wheels” for those in a chair that want to visit our local beach. I don’t know if it is right for Shane. I’m sure you’ve already checked it out. The town is now working on special path materials. People with different physical needs should be able to visit and enjoy the beach too!

Mobi-Mats work well certain types of sand (originally used for Army helicopter landing zones) but if sand is really soft and you have narrow wheels turning around on the mats can be almost impossible
That’s actually an amazing tip! When I was at the Baltic Sea last year we learned at the last day that they have emergency exits in some parts. And those are paved almost into the Sea - stopping like 2-3 meters before the water. I didn’t want to leave!
modifications would be great but that is very difficult ( if you aren't a mechanic yourself.) We tried different things for my mobility scooter but can never find someone who can make it ( my country is too small I think so they don't see the need because they won't have enough customers for it..)

You could definitely get a wheelchair with tank treads my buddy who was the person that ran the disabled vets of Oregon has a badass wheelchair with tank treads
I was so excited to find out that the beach near me has beach wheel chairs, until I discovered that someone had to push you, they weren’t self propelling
I have been in a wheelchair for 6 months in counting as I heal from a bad car wreck. I had similar struggles accessing the beach. This is a solid solution we looked into. I know some beaches at the light house provide mats like that and some sand friend wheelchairs.
I'm so glad that works for you! My chair supposedly can go everywhere, but if I take it slow or just stop anywhere that the ground is soft, it just slowly sinks. 😂
This makes me tear up. My Uncle caught polio as a young child & became quadriplegic. We would go to the beach together because he loved it & had childhood memories there but he was always sitting on the boardwalk in his chair staring out at the ocean. I so wish we could have been able to do this for him. I watch your beautiful life and it makes me think of him. He was brilliant and funny just like you. Oh my goodness I am in tears. I have MS and last year I temporarily lost the ability to Walk without a walker .. me and my wife LOVE going to the beach. I was so after that if next temp this happens to me we can no longer go to the beach together. Thank you for sharing this!

My mom was wheelchair bound by polio since I was 5. Took my son (8) & I (33) b4 we figured how to get her out into open surf... pull chair backwards till hit hard sand and push chair forward...strapping her into chair so not washed out to sea. No one cared salt water killed one chair at a time. Took her 30 years 2get back into ocean. My greatest accomplishment and best fun had w mom...due to simple turn around of her chair that I had pushed 57 years

Some off-road modifications to the chair is what I’d be doing guys. Haha that’d be awesome. ‘Pimp my Chair’ style.
