    Busch & Muller headlamps have the advantage over others that they do not dazzle oncoming drivers or pedestrians, because their beam of light is cut off from the top in a special way. In addition, B&M has rear lights with a brake light function, for example (B&M Toplight Line Brake + / 80mm) - a nice thing if you drive a lot after dark in traffic. Greetings from Poland! 👍

    You shouldn't charge straight from the dyno hub, it'll stuff the battery of your device. I always use a power bank in between my dyno and my devices. You pug your dyno into your power bank, and then your device into the power bank, so during the day your power bank in charging and at night you can charge your device (you can charge your device at the same time while charging the power bank). This way you always get the right amps for charging your device. And your device battery will last longer too.

    Exposure are well worth the money. After going through various brands I got sick of replacing them as I try to ride all weather. Nothing lasted longer than 6 months. My LBS recommended an Exposure TraceR rear light and it has been absolutely bomb proof. Best light I've owned by far. 2 years and no issues. I'll be honest, not a fan of dynamo wheels though. I like to keep things nice and light regardless of the distance. My Wahoo lasts 12 hours+, my lights last for the amount of hours I need, as does my phone. I just pick the kit carefully so I don't need a dynamo. Each to their own though.

    I also have the SP dynamo. I bought mine after noticing that a lot of the top riders in the Indipac used the SP. No need to route both sets of cables down the fork to the connector if only one device can operate at any time. Just allow for a small junction/connector near your bars. Regards cost, I paid about £65 for the hub from Spa Cycles, used an existing rim and bought spokes to suit. I built the wheel myself and paid Lbs £10 for final truing. Total cost about £85 to £90. Light is twin led I built myself so low cost and long throw.

      Hi, got theie Strava light. Awesome.
      BUT Exposue are 'vague' to say at best with regards dynamo charging anything other than their Revo light.
      I have their 8.7 amp support cells to back up my Strada.
      Exposure tell me their dynamo cannot charge it!
      Not impressed.

    I had a dynamo back in 1967 in USA. It would be fork mounted and have a drive wheel that ran against the sidewall. The faster you went the brighter the light. Whole setup was affordable to a 10 year old. It was extra fun.

  • @briansrcadventures1316

    Off cuts of inner tube make good straps for securing the dynamo cables to the fork. Simply feed the cable through then slide them up the fork! My home built dyno wheel was around £150 all in. It is a Shimano xt dynohub, so probably heavier than a fancier SP hub. I tend to just leave my dyno wheel on all the time rather than swapping it over. Think of it as extra training!

    Expensive, But Very good quality and British made.
    It also has a stand light that lasts for 1hr (after 15mins riding) long enough to set up camp or fix a puncture at the road side.
    Most others only last 4-10mins, even the German ones.
    And they do Hub dynamos from £100.

    Great video, but it's VERY expensive.
    BTW you can use Relight as back up lights ....it works on a dynamo/ magnet principle but costs around £20..
    Also, I'm surprised that no one has invented an alternator for a bicycle yet.

    • @groovy_bear
      @groovy_bear 4 роки тому +2

      Practically speaking, a dynamo hub is an alternator, also called a synchronous generator, with permanent magnets rotating with the wheel around a static coil where an alternative current is induced. Or am I mistaken ? Or did you mean something else ?

    • @fredflintstone4558
      @fredflintstone4558 3 роки тому

      @@groovy_bear Actually a dynamo generates DC and an alternator generates AC.. Doesn't really matter whether the coil spins round the magnet or vice versa (although the latter may be easier to make), it depends on how the coil is connected to the output (slip ring commutator for AC and split ring commutator for DC)..check this video out for a better explanation: ua-cam.com/video/AxuMPuIgjSU/v-deo.html. I don't know whether any manufacturer uses any kind of brushless technology in their dynamos or alternators yet. Dynamos are not the most efficient generators really. 😉

    • @groovy_bear
      @groovy_bear 3 роки тому

      @@fredflintstone4558 Thanks for the link, quite interesting and well explained indeed.
      However I just want to point out that, from what I understand, it actually matters whether the coil rotates around the magnet or vice-versa, at least from a practical standpoint. Bicycle generators (whether they are bottle "dynamos" or "dynamo" hubs) are not really dynamos (hence the quotes) but *magnetos*, because they all use a permanent magnet rotating around a static coil and they lack the need for a commutator. Bicycle dynamo is an abusive term.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magneto
      Magnetos are classified as alternators although they're not the most common type. Again, the key thing here is they do not have commutators, that's why they only produce alternative current. But they need quite a bit of electronics to cope with the voltage increasing with rotational speed.
      Hope that's clear and I'm not mistaken. My engineering knowledge on that topic is a bit fuzzy as this is not my specialty...

      @@TheMichaelGrace Most of the battery packs have between 700-1000 charge cycles lifespan.
      Basically 2-3 years of everyday use.
      Then you buy new battery packs £££! And 18650 battery packs aren't cheap, they also don't like extremes of temperature, too hot kills them, too cold and they don't last any length of run time + it kills them.
      Don't get them wet or short circuit them or they're liable to ignite.
      Most battery packs are water resistant NOT waterproof.
      Don't buy any rated at over 3200ma as that's the max capacity that exists & prepare to pay through the nose for them.
      3000ma cost £31.99 + delivery by courier (can't post them in UK)
      + £16 for 2 cases to make 2 battery packs = £32 for three yrs max.
      Then add in the cost of the lights.
      Don't forget that you need road lights which have a shaped beam Not mountain bike/off-road ones. They are illegal and you can be prosecuted, the only time they are allowed is if they flash (not strobe).
      Then add the cost of the REAR light + batteries.
      Don't forget that it costs to charge the battery packs & you have to remember to do this BEFORE you ride.
      So you need a CHARGER or TWO = more ££'s
      ======================================================================================
      Yes the dynamo lights from Exposure are quite expensive BUT
      you can get some really good front ones for around the £50-£100 mark, rear's for £7-£20.
      I got the AXA luxx70 (front) £56 and AXA riff steady (rear) £11 (both have stand-lights).
      A shimano dynamo hub built into a wheel can be had for around the same price, less than £100.
      You can buy the hub dynamos for £20 on their own and build it into your own wheel.
      AND
      Once fitted you have lights....Permanently without messing around.
      Plus they're fitted to the bike and harder to steal/less desirable as they're harder to sell on.
      So to answer your question: Cost effective Immediately!

    When you think about it; a hub dynamo is just about the greenest way to power items on your bike. You're taking available motion and using it to make electric power. Not a new idea. But, thanks to smartphones and GPS and yes, lights it's slowly becoming a little more common in the USA.

    I have several Exposure Max D lights but not dynamo lights. They are simply fantastic, turning night into day. No one pulls out on me and car drivers who don't dip their main beams do so immediately when I aim it straight at them. The only thing I have found which is bad with Exposure lights is that the plastic wires are crap in cold weather. They crack. I bought one of their rear Red Eye lights and by end of the first winter the black lead for it had started to become brittle and crack. Where it entered the light it failed. Also I bought two of their large capacity oval batteries which give the Max D lights a really long burn time on full beam, but same thing happened with the cables for these. They started to become brittle and crack so much so that the cables for both have failed. So one rear light and two batteries from them were a total waste of money as I only got one season's use out of them. Exposure did not want to know when I complained. Now for rear lights I have gone back to CatEye the TDLR 600 which is reliable work horse, bright and has been totally reliable over 4-5 years and still going strong. Plus it is a hell of a lot cheaper than corresponding Exposure rear lights. Their front lights such as the Max D are good, but their rear lights avoid.

    I've been running a Son hub and Exposure Revo light/tail light for about a year now so was interesting to see what you thought of it compared to the other light. It's on my commuter/audax bike and I leave it on all the time mainly because in the year it's been on not one car has pulled out on me. I think there's something about the strength and position (same as yours) of the light that makes people pause and then they seem to wait. So personally I'd leave it on even through the summer. Hub and light weren't cheap options but I've had no worry about charging light batteries for however long the ride for the last year - so lack of battery anxiety easily balances the initial cost.
    I never really went down the route of USB charging, instead I bought a Garmin Etrex 30 which runs for days on a couple of AA batteries. I do believe there was a connector though which you could plug in instead of the rear light - so using the light's output socket. Might get around to it though if I ever do any multi-day bike packing.

    In theory the output to your rear light should be able to also be a charger port. Exposure make a series of usb cables. So in daytime you could run your front light and power the usb. Or if there is a suitable connector the input to your light may also be available to charge. Ask Exposure but the first suggestion may be the best. Unfortunately a dynamo can only produce a finite amount of power.

    While the SP rolls really well (the speed penalty is roughly about a kilometre an hour, possibly less), it doesn't generate nearly as much power as some of the competition. The very expensive SON, while it weighs about the same and rolls roughly as well, generates quite a bit more energy and would, depending on the charger tethered, charge a USB device and power the lights at once. Some newer Shimano dynamos provide a lot more power, too - but are much uglier, significantly heavier and roll much worse.
    I had a SON 28 and a SON Delux. Neither one flickered on slow climbs, while this one does.
    By the way, yours is not the PD-8X (that's the Centrelock version) - it must be the PD-8 (I guess), one of the non-disc ones.

      No, they don't. The electromagnets definitely affect the axle. But it depends on how you spin it. If you were to move the wheel back and forth on the bike, you probably couldn't tell the difference.
      However, try to turn the bare axle? Difficult. My wife couldn't turn it, whereas a similar quality hub axle will turn effortlessly.
      But it's a small amount of resistance to have 24/7 light that never dies. For many, that's worth the tiny resistance penalty.
