This video is really helpful! The idea of adding cuttlebone is just awesome, I'll also try some coconut next time I'm preparing a chop for Pinchos. Thank you!
Really helpful videos. My rescue parrotlet doesn't really know/like veggies so starting him on sprouted seeds and keep trying to introduce others. A bit harder to get out for some of these things right now but trying my best. TBH, when I brave a shop, most veggies I buy are for him
hazefyfe just keep offering the veggies everyday and sprinkle the seeds and pellets you use on top and they will eventually start eating it. It took my rescue a really long time but it did happen.
I encourage my cockatiel to try new foods by pretending to eat them myself (or actually eating them if I can) and saying "om nom nom nom" and making pleasurable noises like I'm really enjoying it. Then whatever I have he's willing to try it at least once. You are your bird's flock, and if they see a flock member enjoying something, naturally they want some of it too.
Could you do a video on pellets vrs seeds I've recently changed my birds over to pellets after some research but you're an absolute well of knowledge and I'd love to learn more

Instead of cuttle bone shavings for added calcium, could you use a few bits of egg shell? Caveat: Only shells of hard boiled or other cooked-in-the shell eggs so as to avoid the possibility of bacteria from raw eggs.
My little deamon will pick the seeds and ditch everything else, it only worked when i grinded the seeds to dust, so he started to eat the vegies, started with a higher % of grinded seeds and then lowered over time. Im still in this process, hopefully this stubborn boy will change his diet.

Hi, I would contact a vet if it seems to be hurting him. If you just cut off his nail, it should grow back fine! I’m not a super expert and have only had my two birds for 2 years so am still learning, but if it is a nail it should grow back just fine! :)
Not to be mean, but, in no way should anyone cut an 11 day old budgies nails. I hope you meant 11 month old budgie, that would make more sense. Glad, he is better.
Is there a specific reason you peeled the turnip and carrot? Or is it a preference thing? I am slowly working on a very picky Umbrella Cockatoo who thinks "people food" is a horrible idea.
Spinach isn’t a great source of calcium because of how much oxalate it contains! Oxalate binds to calcium which makes it unavailable for the body to absorb!
For the first question: You just want to put the chop in a container, seal it and then put it in the freezer. For the second: I think you can use a normal mixer but not for too long( because you’ll end up with paste) or you can cut the ingredients with a knife
I don’t anymore, I make enough for a week (or try to) and make a fresh batch that’s kept in the fridge. You can freeze it though, then just leave it in the fridge overnight to thaw (microwaving would kill off some of the nutritional value)
At 4:11 you forgot to cut out the first time you mentioned shredded coconut, haha I just thought it was so cute, why did you want to do a second take anyway?
Depends on how long you stay away from home. Cockatiels love to be the center of all the attention. Make sure you have a big cage with a lot of toys so your cockatiel won’t be bored when you are away. And when you are home, spend as much time with your cockatiel as possible. But no, it won’t be a problem, as long as you give your cockatiel the attention it deserves. Having a big cage is really important btw, you need to make sure your cage is big and it has a lot of toys in it.
All of it can be fed to finches, but they might have different preferences because their beaks aren't as strong and not shaped for shredding/biting. My finches loved cucumber (mostly they picked the seeds), spinach, salad, strawberry... Just try and mix with teeny bit of seed.
Thank you! I don’t have any finches yet. Just trying to learn all I can before getting my canary. Is the bulk of your finches diet composed of seeds or eggfood?
@@incanusolorin2607 no eggfood for mine, just seeds and fresh produce. An exception is if they were young birds (baby-ish) or breeding females. In Germany they say eggfood encourages breeding behaviour and that is always tied to risks for female birds. Give enough calium through sand, grit-block or cuttle bone -> reduces chances of egg binding.
It actually makes a lot of sense that eggfood encourages reproductive behavior. In Brazil most canary keepers are breeders (as a hobby, not business), so it’s understandable that the majority of recommended foods would prioritize the “productivity” of the flock and the overall health of the chicks rather than the health of each individual bird. Since I’m looking for a companion pet, I should probably try and get my information from international sources. Thanks again

Can you make loads and freeze it and then defrost it for the week or so because I only have one and no way would my parrotlet be able to eat it all before it goes rotten?
the mockingjay the birdtricks cook book does exactly that actually. There are 3 seasonal chop recipes that lasts about 4 months. Make sure all the ingredients are as dry as possible before freezing it.
I just watched this and made a very similar chop for our 3-4 month old Pacific Parrolet Luna. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, they really are so helpful. Luna is still getting used to different foods so she hasn't really dug into it yet. She has been doing this interesting thing for over a week now where it looks like she is scratching her tongue on the edge of her top beak. I haven't been able to find anything online directly related to this behavior, have any of you had experience with it? To me, it reminds me of when you have a canker sore or bite your tongue and you get a bump and it drives you crazy but you can't refrain from touching it against your teeth or with your tongue. It also kind of looks like maybe her beak is sharp or not evenly ground and maybe that is what is bugging her. Again, I'm not sure if this is what she's doing, or what it means. I can send a video if it would help anyone diagnosis this.
Tanner Gittins does she have chewable (soft wood, woven straw, even popsicle sticks) toys to file the tip? You could also visit a vet and they might recommend trimming her beak if that’s the issue but she’s very young. As for veggie, chop broccoli fine or grated carrots (worked to introduce my cockatiels to veggies). Also mix seeds into chop and or sprinkle on top (lightly press) so they see it’s there, I like using chia seeds.

Looking back on this video and comparing with your newer ones, Newt's feather quality has improved so drastically since you adopted him! The power of proper nutrition!
I freeze chopped veggies if I have more than will keep in the fridge and then serve select pieces as completely fresh which are usually foods that the humans will eat before it goes off. For lettuce I also just started growing my own so you can harvest small bird doses from it without it going bad.
@FlockTalk I made a beautiful chop which included bokchoy. I put it in the freezer, and after thawing, it wilted in minutes. I made collard greens and Radicchio with corn, apples, and cauliflower. He didn't even look at it. It's very frustrating. I have been trying for months. I can never manage to make a small batch. That's why I like your cup/spoon idea. 😊
Yeah the greens will almost always wilt when frozen, I still add them in to the mix but just keep some whole greens in the fridge that I take a piece off of each morning so they get the fresh crunch. Storing them with the base in water helps them stay longer, ultimately some will still end up wasted unless the people eat it though! Aside from growing it fresh I really haven’t found a good way to keep the leaves crispy for a long time!
@FlockTalk In the morning I don't have time and he doesn't like leafy greens or greens in general. It is even a waste buying lettuce or spinach or kale. I am assuming he never got introduced to these foods as a Baby bird and 2 years of his life. He like Crunchy stuff and my baked bird cookies. Maybe I will hide more veggies in there. 😊
Maybe! Some birds do just take a lot of time and finessing to try new foods! I’ve spent two entire years convincing a bird to try a new food before. Sometimes they just need the excessive time!
@@ummii586 do you freeze and then let it thaw each morning before giving it to them? Or thaw in the fridge overnight? I have a parrotlet and she eats so little that I’m not sure how to make the chop last/ if it’s even worth making chop at all. Thanks!
Try to introduce red fruits to them slowly, put some little pisces in their usual food( not too often, 3-4 times a week is ok I think, use it more as a treat)
Thank you sooo much. I've been experimenting with chop and so far my mixtures have been too wet...I have a question on a different topic. How does your GC CONURE get along with your parrolets? I have a CG CONURE AND Parakeets. I've been thinking about getting a parrolet but I'm not sure if one would be a good fit in my flock.
They tolerate one another, newt is a very good boy with respecting Mia’s body language and Mia is a particularly lenient parrotlet. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend mixing a parrotlet with multiple different birds unless you have the space to potentially separate them completely (and divide your time). It’s far more likely for a parrotlet to want to have its own space than it is for them to want to share. Parrotlets are not particularly social birds, some can get along, but it’s really unlikely with the species.
@@FlockTalk Thank you for the info. That's what I thought. Some people are lucky to find a individual that will get along. It's not worth the gamble and I don't want to take time from my other birds, so I won't add one to my flock.
honestly when doing research in bird chop i was so confused, but thank you so much for this video!! it saved me money and time! im excited to transition my two boys onto bird chop.
I have two beautiful budgies and what I do in my chop is carrots, lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli/cauliflower. And to make them eat it, I put sprouted or just regular seeds. I really recommend this! My birds eat it well and so does my friend’s cockatiel.
Hello my friend Thank You for all of the excellent instructional videos you have produced. They are so informative, very well done. and nicely presented. The chop recipe is filled with great ideas for a healthy diet. I've learned a lot from your hard work. May I kindly offer to you just a single observation on your videos. The audio portion - your voice comes through very tinny especially in your large birdy room, not so much in the kitchen prep area but still noticeable. Please know that I am not a sound expert but before writing, I've checked the videos on several of my devices including the tv and it is consistent as described, sort of like an echo feedback. Perhaps you might try a head microphone speaking right into it possibly eliminating the large room reverberation, I really don't know but I'm sure you'll figure it out. Thank You Again for all of the hard work and great information you share with your large flock of birdy lovers. bob brown melbourne florida

If we just started with pellets successfully should I remove the pellets when I put this out? They haven't had success with veggies yet
thank you again for the wonderful insight video! I'm inspired!
Priscilla Ng agreed☺️🙂
how should we preserve the rest? should we freeze it or any other way?
Yes! You can just freeze it 🙈 idk if you still need an answer but maybe for someone who has the same question? 🙊☺️
@@ummii586 do you freeze and then let it thaw each morning before giving it to them? Or thaw in the fridge overnight? I have a parrotlet and she eats so little that I’m not sure how to make the chop last/ if it’s even worth making chop at all. Thanks!

The beet: 🥛
Would you add some jalapenos or cayenne pepper
How long does this last in the fridge before it goes off and gunky? About a week did u say. Great video helped me a lot
What do I do if my budgies are afraid of red fruit?
Try to introduce red fruits to them slowly, put some little pisces in their usual food( not too often, 3-4 times a week is ok I think, use it more as a treat)
great video you look beautiful i love the birds 💌
Do you steam the beetroot
Did you buy it online
What did Newt say at 14:23?
Thank you ❤️
The quinoa isn't cooked, right?
Good question. I don't think it is, but if like to be sure. I think it's dry to help soak up the wetness.
Debby M can confirm it’s dry, wet/soaked quinoa sticks together in clumps
Really help full
Birds can have raw sweet potato!
water, fire wind, earth Yes, all birds
My birb is just starting to eat chop and he is seeming healthier
I have two beautiful budgies and what I do in my chop is carrots, lettuce, cabbage, and broccoli/cauliflower. And to make them eat it, I put sprouted or just regular seeds. I really recommend this! My birds eat it well and so does my friend’s cockatiel.
Hello my friend
Thank You for all of the excellent instructional videos you have produced.

Could you please recommend a cage for a cockatiel this will be my first bird and I normally go to school six hours a day. Reply with a link if you can. Hope I don’t sound rude.☺️
2-3 greens (spinach, broccoli) 2 yellow-orange (yellow bell pepper, carrots) 1-2 purple-red (red bell pepper, beets)
hello, thank you for the recipe, is this appropriate for budgies? and can it be frozen? thanx
And ya when I give my bird some of the chop in the morning and after an hour take out the chop do I put it in the freezer or what?
This is the most helpful video I’ve seen as far as how to make chop for newbies. Thanks
Do you freeze the rest or refrigerate it? Won’t it also spoil in the fridge after a few days?
About the cuttlebone, does it still work with mineral blocks?
Seeing your video after a while, nice video!
When they say squash, do they mean pumkin, too?
Does this recipee work for cockatiels?
45Percent of my bird diet is millet , snf the rest is greens
It should be at least 75% greens for your bird to stay healthy
@@gracesmith9438 Not true to be honest.
Pellets should be the main dominator.
Followed by about a third as vegetables
a small amount of fruits
and then the small amount of seeds for treats / foraging.
@@bolt1437 but millet is very fattening wouldn’t recommend it as a daily diet
@@gracesmith9438 Never did I say I was against that.
@@bolt1437 i never said you did but millet shouldn’t be given to your bird everyday and the person i replied to said that was something they give to their bird
