Is Benelli TRK 502 really that terrible motorcycle?

  • My opinion and riding impressions of riding the Benelli TRK 502. From what I read in reviews, it is kind of a controversial motorcycle. Motorcyclenews.com literally says: “The engine hasn’t got enough gusto to provide decent acceleration, and the brakes feel like drum brakes. It doesn’t feel like a bike built in 2017.”
    I wanted to find out wether it is really that bad and contribute a little bit to overall picture of this motorcycle online. OK, the weight of the motorcycle is just enormous, but besides that I did like to motorcycle. I like the design, sounds is cool, breakes are OK, definitely not like drumbrakes. There are lot of accesories in standard but the biggest advantage of this bike it its comfort.
    Anyway, do let me know what are your thoughts of this bike and if you own it also long-term experinece. It is really helpful.

    Bought 502x March 2020
    Given I'm 6ft and 14 stone I needed a bike that was tall for commuting and general stress relief after work. Didn't have massive funds behind me and didn't want to get £15k of debt for an Africa twin (lovely as they are).
    Downs..
    yep... Its heavy. I'm pretty strong but if you slip its hard to pull it up from prone. That said... ANY bike is a bastard to pick up from prone and if you're bike is prone, you probably have worse things to worry about at that point.
    Vibration is an issue. It does vibrate more than my old SV1000 which had 70k on the clock. But it's not the worst I've ever known. It's noticeable but not a problem in normal riding.
    Ups...
    Price is about £5k.
    It's not a complicated bike - once the first few dealer stamps have been ticked off I'll be doing most of the maintenance myself. Something I couldn't say about an Africa twin. Its basic and doesn't ry to be anything else.
    Comfort. This is THE most comfortable bike I've ridden for any distance.
    Fuel economy is average. Ride like Miss Daisy and its good, ride like Rossi on a final lap and it's as bad as every other road bike.
    Personally I love it. Its exactly what it purports to be a cheap adventure style bike for taller folk. It's fun to ride and although it's not up there with the Honda or BMW... (its never going to be) but then you're not paying the same. Stop comparing it as such.
    If you have £20k to spend on a bike,get and BMW or Honda. If you have a normal budge...

    I ride the Benelli for 2 days and a big advantage people often forget about this motorcycle is that it is one of the few Adventure bike that are friendly for people smaller than 170cm. I happen to be 168cm and the 800mm seat height is just perfect. Only the Himalayan and the V-Strom 250 have similar seat height in this range of price.

    Thanks JF for your test. As concerns the debate about the quality of this motorcycle, I think we should also keep on mind that the costs of most famous crossover models (such as ducati, bmw and triumph) is two time or more. Under my opinion that is only partially justified by electronic devices, and other optional. I hope defects of trk502 can be solved with the next model...... I hope at the same price. Bye

    I wasn't aware that any road testers said it was a bad motorcycle. People say is heavy ? Well if you compare it to Honda CB500 x yes is is heavier, but the TRK has crash bars twin disc front brakes , 50mm front forks all as standard . Its also nearly £2000 cheaper than the Honda . The TRK502 is a great motorcycle , its a big proper motorcycle thats extremely well equipped and its incredible value . I believe there is no better motorcycle in its class at this price point.

    You pay for what you get. A new bike for £5000 isn't bad. You'll be the first owner with a decent warranty. It has enough power to ride on any UK road at a steady 80 without getting pulled over. Your up high so you can tour and enjoy the countryside too. Not everyone wants to thrash 9 bell's out of a bike.

      Benelli has more interesting design and more value for the price (it has more accessories). Honda is lighter, can be cheaper in the long-term but this does not need to be true. As Honda CB500X is a best-seller there is massively huge community and lots of aftermarket parts for this bike. Also these two engines behave little bit different (due to different firing), so the vibrations, sound and torque curve is different. I would have hard time myself when choosing one of these :) Good luck and let me know what you've picked.

I won't mind Vibrations, frame finishes etc since I have got enough experience with my current 150cc single cylinder Engine bike as my starter bike for almost a year now and I use it on daily basis for commuting purpose . Before you talk of vibrations and torque kindly ride a 150cc Bike and I can bet to my last coin you will be very positive on the TRK 502 . For the speed, that is enough for everyday riding unless you are looking for a rocket. And by the way how often do you ride past 160Km/h Leave alone 182Km/h? The truth of the matter is this bike is the best as far as the price is concerned. At KSH 650,000 equivalent to US$6,500 this must be a winner. Actually I disagree with you this Bike is not for beginners.

    One of the biggest reasons this bike gets criticised for is just the fact that China is behind it. And it is obvious wester market doesn't like that. This bike's flaws ( high rpm at 150km, vibrations etc.) can be fixed easily without spending much.

      The R&D, innovations, design and everything connected is actually made here in Italy in Benelli. I am pretty satisfied with my mobile phone, computer, camera and loads of other stuff made in China :) It does not need to be that bad :)

      JF Motorcycles when major companies like sony manufacture in China they are in control of the whole process but my belief is benelli have been brought by a Chinese firm for use of the name the Chinese are running it and manufacturing it not the same as some one like sony manufacturing a product in China it will be interesting to see how many of these bikes are still running in 5 years time

    •  5 років тому

      They could drop the Benelli sticker and it would still be a nice bike.
      Chinese companies have started to lose the fear of using their own names, which is good. Soon we'll have as many options as there are with phones (Xiaomi, ZTE, Huawei and hundreds of others) that sell and work better than the more expensive traditionally branded options.

    • @craigbolton1926
      @craigbolton1926 5 років тому

      You are forgetting that the Chinese will make anything you want to any specification you request. Benelli are making products that are affordable, yet still good quality. They are also now jointly owned by another conglomerate that makes quality products.

    Seems like a Volvo of the motorcycling world. I'm sure this would be an excellent machine for the American (and increasingly UK) "Prepper Culture" where "society collapses" and you have to go and live in your own "Gite" i.e. countryside hideaway. Agricultural weight and build, but so long as it's reliable ...

    Seems to me you started off far too overly influenced by the highly critical MCN review. (Incidentally, MCN's review of the bike has been highly criticised by most road testers). It comes across that the more you rode it, the more you enjoyed it. Ride safe.

    I had a trk 502 x for 8 months..
    Positives:Very beautiful, extras, very comfortable, good price, good brakes..
    Negatives:very heavy for 500cc bike.. You feel the weight at the corners..
    Not the best build quality..
    Overall it's OK but the real deal will be the trk 800..If the benelli build the trk with a good quality like the 752 s and keep the weight normal plus electronics and good price will hit the market and will be a best seller..

    • @JFMotorcycles
      @JFMotorcycles  6 років тому +1

      I think that performance of the engine is ok, but power/weight ratio is not perfect with having 235 kg of mass. It seems that on Leoncino it could be better.

    • @Claudiozee
      @Claudiozee 6 років тому

      I'd think so too. My bike is a 180Kg 650cc, also parallel twin. with 235Kg you need way more grunt. The Leoncino is smaller. would be fine there.

    Could have been a good bike, but NOPE! they are doing what ALL manufacturers are doing. The Benelli scrambler is 170kg dry. This is basically the same bike EXCEPT it weighs 40kg more. Does a slightly bigger tank and some different plastics really weigh 40kg?????????? Because obviously what we want from a low powered ADV is a huge amount more weight? Why isn't anyone pointing that out!! It could have been ok at a similar weight. As it is why would you buy one of these when you can buy a second-hand DL650 and have another 15hp. Did they make it massively heavy so it didn't embarrass the ridiculous 250kg ADVs.
