- As part of the wildlife area of my garden. I want to build a #hedgehoghouse, #hedgehogs. #behedgehogaware
I went down to Lower Moss Wood Nature Reserve & Wildlife Hospital and met with Ray Jackson MBE. He founded the charity and has been looking after hedgehogs for over 30 years.

Ray gave me his expert guidance on hedgehog house construction, hedgehog care, wildlife pond safety and how to make a hedgehog feeding station.
1. Not too big. around 1 foot (30cm) square is ample.
2. Build an entrance tunnel big enough for a plump hibernating hedgehog but too small for predators.
3. A wooden waterproof construction is best as wood is warmer.
4. make sure there is adequate ventilation, a downward facing drainpipe will do the job. This allows condensation out.
5. Put a small amount of bedding in the box but more importantly have dry bedding nearby. The hedgehog likes to make its own nest.
6. Have a feeding station nearby (see video) if the hog needs food on a mild day .
7. Dry cat food is best.
8. Avoid human contact.
9. If you find a hedgehog in distress seek advice as soon as possible.
10. Clean out annually, avoid nesting season and the hibernation period.

Torn paper is no good for bedding in outside hog houses, it'll get wet & stay wet, rescues use it because the hogs are kept indoors! Dust extracted barley straw is what you want to be using as bedding in hog houses in your garden.
Got 4 Riverside Woodcraft hog houses in the garden, two feeding stations, had hoglets born in one of the houses last year, that was a first but hopefully not the last, was wonderful seeing them grow up on all the ring camera footage, got loads of cameras out there to watch them & while the hogs are absent I'm seeing wood mouse activity & even saw a female moving her pups the other night, apparently they can have young in the winter if it's very mild.

I feel a volunteer coming on. If I can use all the space I have for 2023, then maybe this will make me a better gardener. The plan is to have a meadow garden! 😊

We are lucky enough to have a hedgehog visiting our garden, some videos on my page. Don't think they have used our hedgehog house though sadly.

I’m building a dead hedge and was thinking of incorporating a hedgehog house in the dead hedge. It’ll be in a corner by a pretty big pond which is quiet. Do you think it’s a good idea?
Hi Patrick. Yes I think that will be fine. You probably know this, but make sure it is not located where the pond may overflow and also make sure there is a way of escape if a hedgehog should fall in the water. Good luck with it 😊
Hoping the ‘Insectivorous’ food referred to that can be bought over the counter and fed to birds is NOT Mealworms or Calciworms as these cause Metabolic Bone Disease in Hedgehogs.

In Lanzarote we have erizo morunos and european hedgehogs. We feed them cat food. Unfortunately, they tend to have mange. What is the treatment? Thanks
Hi I'm sorry, I do not know the answer to mange. Possibly google it or email a hedgehog charity. I apoligise. I hope the hedgehogs get better soon. Mark
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK thank you for replying. I use some medicine for cats and just prepare the dose for their body weight. Hedgehogs are awesome!!
