For home practice, I've stopped using amps for my guitar and bass few years back. Current ampsims do sound great, and I find it very easy to practice through my PC instead of through an amp. Most practice amps sound too loud for room practice. I mean, if you have a big house, that might be ok, but in a small apartment, the sound will get to neighbours, so practicing with headphones is something that I do most of the times.
Fender rumble series, for several reasons, one there all solid state technology making them so light that the first time I picked one up I thought it was a prop. Two they don't break the bank, and three they were the first amp I owned that allowed me to plug in my phone and play music on the amp and still play my bass through the same amp.
SansAmp DI. I started with the bass driver and then moved on to the ParaDriver. sold my ampeg and never regretted it. granted I don't gig, just solo and record but the sound of those boxes are great.
