They are playing a variant of a Japanese song called Agari-Yatai. It is a call back song and the Welsh drummers are supposed to respond by imitating the Taiko drummers.
Welsh drums are know for fast tripple hits. Would be much better if they played the melody in a proper way those drums are played. More like welsh guards v. taiko drummers.

@@TheTeresu Thanks. That was very good, and i enjoyed that. Many years ago I saw an huge English band called She-Boom (long before the internet and youtube.) which was also all female and more vital, with many huge kettle drums and many other types. I think you are comparing apples with oranges. Static bands have a very different sound, the ones favoured in the west are often too focused on sheer power and seem to have a surprisingly limited range of sound and repertoire, but maybe that is just me. Military and marching bands are no better, but provide a very different styles of music and a wider repertoire of things played. The variation of drum styles, including drum speeds which seem to defy explanation as how it can be done are standard, making pounding a big drum in a group of big drums, a high effort but relatively low skill activity.
It is wonderful to bask in culture. They have their own magnificence, unique to themselves. It is a blessing to be enjoyed and shared many times over. Drums exist to be played on. Bang away!
Love the show case of different styles of war drums. The east went for a deep resonating sound that vibrates your chest where as the west went for a faster higher pitched sound that should have no problem being heard in the middle of a fight. Would been neat if it was more of a dual rather then a simple call response show to better showcase each styles strengths.
modern style taiko playing actually has its roots in drums used in religious services/celebrations and in the arts such as theater and less so to do with war and war drums
In this case, Drums r the respective nation's instrument of hopeful prayers. Hear how they compliment and support each other especially during hard times and trouble. Rest assure, Our Lady of Nations hear and love each one.
Last street performance I saw on here had a Granny with an Elmo doll getting around on a mobility scooter. At first she was far away and then she was up close. Felt very Sesame Street to me but the drumline was very good.
The Welsh Guard with the base drum was of a few times, he fluffed it when playing with the girl and again while in the line. I love watching the Takio drummers, my go to is Drum Tao.
Both, Japan and England have some things in common. Both are islands, both are empires, and both have wonderful, talented and beautiful people. Thank you both, for so much you've given to the whole world.
Two completely different styles of drumming here. The military drumming of the Guards was designed to encourage troops on the battlefield and to transmit orders and signals under fire. Taiko drums by their very size are not a portable instrument and are designed for a more courtly performance. to say one is better than the other is to demonstrate pure ignorance. in this performance both styles strive to each compliment the other. It's about music people not trashtalk.
You're some what right, and abit ignorant to lol, Taiko drums where used for battle, too and also communication between villages. No partisan stuff. This is what we (humans) could do. This is a sounding to the universe. Each (and all) unit is so disciplined and co-ordinated, and calls up high emotions. I don't know how to put it. These are the ones to put us out and about to the galaxy. It is a wide vacuum beyond our atmosphere. If (and we will or perish) we can combine/complement each other/person/government/civilization/drum and bugle corp (jokeA), this is our clarion call to survival. And if not, these ladies and gentlemen ROCK@!!@!!
Taiko drums were used in battle. I dunno who tf liked your comment except more dumbfucks like yourself. Also you'd think it'd be obvious they were used on the field by just the style of music taiko drummers perform.
Taiko are universally battle drums in Asian cultures from China, Japan down to Thailand and Malay states. Thais call them literally 'battle drums'. They are signal instruments and does build morale.
I watched the Taiko Drummers perform at the Ordway in the Twin Cities, Minnesota decades ago and I will never forget it. I took my husband on his birthday since he was a timpani and bass drummer with the UofM Marching and Concert Bands. I have two Kodo cds which I still play...but they really need to be seen!
@ Nick ... I think I'd feel more confident behind the Taiko Crew if the sheer volume was going to matter ! But hey, what a great show from both sides :-)
You know, for the sheer intimidation of sounds of battle, nobody can outdo Taiko drummers. They sound like, "Doom is nigh, gentlemen! Now, come out here with your little plastic drums!" 😈 I wonder what Scottish pipes and Taiko drums would sound like together, pipes being my second favorite for inducing goosebumps.
This reminds me of the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band performance in the Royal Edinburgh Military tattoo. 3 of the Drummers used Chinese drums to simulate a part of Singapore's History
These people would be blown away by the sheer awesomeness of a good American College football team's marching band. They would make your knees quiver and put chills down your spine. Amazing sound.
You have to give the Welsh Guard credit though. They are incredibly disciplined and professional. I mean here they are, just doing their daily routine all while these protestors and their drums trying to prove their point. Hats off to the Welsh Guard.
This juxtaposition of two forms of drumming can symbolise well the transition and adaption of an ancient country into the modern world, and its struggles to preserve its identity or to adapt to outside influences.
