Irwin Allen brought a lot of joy to kids with his movies and TV shows in the 60s He deserves a lot more respect than he has gotten

Because David Hedison was in the lead, they were able to recycle footage from this movie to make up the bulk of an episode of the *Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea* TV series. If nothing else, Irwin Allen was a master of saving money and reusing props for his various productions. And his shows were among the most fun to watch for the pre-teen syfy-loving kid that I was in the 1960s.

@@BLAlley Not the way I look at it at all. Rather, he made do with a limited show budget by stretching it as far as he could. As the show was produced by 20th Century Fox, he had access to their entire film library. So why spend money (especially his own money, which he wasn't even expected to do) on what would be crappy props and effects anyway when he could use all that footage for free, and many of the same props and costumes that were used for them for free as well? Considering everything, the show looked way better than it would have done otherwise. That gave him some advantages for his shows that the concurrently-produced Star Trek lacked (being made by a minor studio at the time with a far less extensive film library and props department).

I grew up in the 1950s, so I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for "slurpasauruses." The films in which the dinos really knocked me out were, "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" and "The Giant Behemoth." I also have fond memories of "Dinosaurus!" (Thanks, Jack H. Harris). I saw "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1959) at the movies. I just wish that film would have had marine reptiles fighting each other (like in the novel). I also saw "The Lost World" on the big screen when it premiered in 1960. Thanks a million, The Unapologetic Geek, for this informative and entertaining video review.

Anything Irwin Allen touches (by which I mean everything) eventually turns to junk. However, we did get to see Jill St. John. That counts for something.

I've never known you to be anything except fair in your assessments of relatively low budget or comparatively middling to low reputational films. You put the films in their proper context and never take cheap shots at them and I've always appreciated that (among many other things) about your work.

I'd be more okay with the lizard effects if not for the animal abuse behins them. Its not as bad as 1940's "One Million BC," but that is a very low bar.

More like *1960's* cheap, with a low budget as well. You can't expect to get something like Star Wars when you're hampered by both a limited budget and limited technology. Young people (that is, anyone under 60) are so spoiled these days. 😁

There are several movies about a journey & discovering dinosaurs or whatever monsters, and I think the best one is "Warlord of Atlantis" from the 70s, which took me 10+ years to finaly get the DVD of it.
There's a good book series, which I know from the audiobook versions, horror/action-adventures with lots of creatures going after humans, some stories are just like those movies, but in a very mature way, people die in gruesome ways, and sometimes worse things happen.
Things like "Primordia, To the Center of the Earth, Mysterious Island: Lemuria", it's from Greig Beck, good stuff.

Like most films this is a product of it's era. That's not to say it is bad but at the time of it's contemporaries it was distinctly average at best. However to the child of the day (ie me) with his large bag of popcorn on a Saturday morning in the local cinema it was an absolute event. Today it is without doubt lacking, but back then it was a magical part of my youth, so whenever I dig it out of my collection for a viewing (occasionally I admit) it takes me back to those days, and for that I will always be grateful to this and other films like it. They say that music can evoke long lost memories in people, well these classics of the 50's and 60's do exactly the same for me. Happier more innocent and carefree times before the onset of adulthood. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂

The lizards have the advantage of moving like living things. Stop motion has that stop start motion. There are advantages to flawed and unlikeable characters. In The Fountainhead having all unlikeable characters seem to play to the purpose of the story. The Lost World had a scientist who didn't like being called a liar. He considered questioning his word fighting words. A guy blinded by vengance. A man who thought this expedition was no place for a woman and the the right woman to convince him he was right. It was a fun adventure movie. I read recently they believe there's an ocean under the earth. That seems a good premise for a Lost World/Center of the Earth remake/mashup.

You take the time to put these pieces together and offer a well informed, fact based opinion. Don't let those others get under your skin. They have 99% the same DNA as a monkey. Would you really care what a monkey thinks of you?

"lesser known dangers of the logging industry"
    Prophecy?
There were so many exotic adventure films in the late 50s that, even by 1960, this film felt derivative. Given that is also inferior in execution, its quaint visual charm may be its only redeeming feature.
Maybe it's the fact that I agree with an alarming percentage of your takes on stuff, but I have zero issues with your review style. A critical view is not the same as personal preference. People should accept that fact and move on.

I enjoyed "The Lost World" when I first saw it on it's original release when I was 10. I had seen "Journey to the Center of the Earth" in very early 1960 which ignited my interest in Paleontology, Geology and other 'ologies' in which I still hold much interest in today. I have an entire room in the basement filled with rock and mineral specimens and 10 tons of stone (literally, no exaggertion!) that I have collected and hauled to my rock garden outside over the last 60 years, so was eager to see another 'giant dinosaur' movie which would ignite my imagination further. While I found 'The Lost World" interesting, and still do, it does not compare with the incredible scenes in 'JTTCOTE". The dinosaurs, for me, at age 10 were disappointing. With their glued on doo dads, they lacked the realism of actual dinosaurs I had become familiar with in books. Granted, 'JTTCOTE' also glued accoutrements on to the backs of small lizards, but those were patterned after a reptile, Dimetrodons, that had actully existed in the Permian period nearly 300 million years ago. In reality, Dimetrodons were not nearly as big as represented in "JTTCOTE" but still provide a great thrill today. Incidentally, Dimetrodons were not Dinosaurs, but were 'mammal like reptiles' due to similar tooth structure as mammals which would evolve millions of years after Dimetrodon.

The Lost World goes out of its way to be inaccurate, too, when Challenger calls one of them a sauropod (specifically a brontosaurus) and then, at the end, he calls a baby lizard a tyrannosaurus. You don’t have to be into paleontology to know how ridiculous that is!

  • @PrivateIvan

I saw this movie on TV in black and white when I was really young. I only remember the cheesy dinosaur fights and the scene where the group of adventurers is walking along the cliff above the lava. At the time, I thought this was a pretty cool movie and probably contributed to my wanting to read everything and anything about dinosaurs when I was 5 to 6 years old. As my kindergarten teacher once told my mother, I wasn't able to answer too many questions, but I was able to tell her the names of most dinosaurs. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
