    Even if polybius did exist, the government certainly would not let the arcade owners keep the polybius machines. All the machine supposedly disappeared at the same time soon after they appeared. The machines (if it was real) were probably either destroyed, or hidden away in a government facility.

    Very close to the original. There were 2 strobe-lights in the top insides of the cabinets that would flash sometimes. The vector-graphics are pretty close too, but there was more of a 3D effect like I-Robot. There was also an early subwoofer in the cabinet that thumped like Asteroids a bit but had an odd pattern. In the very top was a small camera with a visible red LED up inside, above the CRT. It was at the Rockingham Arcade in Salem, NH around 1981 to 1982, and I remember it gave me a headache as a kid and I didn't play it much and it wasn't very popular. It was a shoot-em-up though but the difficulty went up really fast, really early-on. By Level 2 it was unplayable. There was a robot-head in vector-graphics at the end of Level 1 and you had to shoot at it while diamonds of different colors were attacking you.

      So you remember playing on the original back then? That is awesome!

    • @mikecronis
      @mikecronis 8 років тому +12

      Shadowhunter87 Yeah. It was a bit annoying of a game. Loads of techno-subwoofer throbbing and strobes. I always wondered about the little camera behind the smoke glass in the top left corner. I had commented to my best friend at the time about it. He thought it was if someone was stealing quarters or something.

    • @Shadowhunter87
      @Shadowhunter87 8 років тому +5

      That's very interesting indeed! I think there is less to the game than the Internet makes out of it, but there's apparently more to it than meets the eye.
      How well was the reception back then?

    • @mikecronis
      @mikecronis 8 років тому +1

      It was not well received.

    • @mikecronis
      @mikecronis 8 років тому +9

      I'd like to add that the version they attempted here is very close to what I remember (perhaps Mandela Effect at work here). The actual gameplay was tilted like the high-score setup though in a sort of 3D effect like Tempest, but very similar. More squares and cubes that would rush into you and back but the multi-light-strobe of each polygon here is pretty accurate. If you add some "I Robot" Arcade elements and tilt the gameplay making the top smaller and the bottom larger in a false 3D effect it's pretty close. Oh, and of course add a massive subwoofer and put strobes inside the cabinet above your head. These could be triggered by an explosion-sound specifically like the way Google's "Voice Recognition" could audio WAV file identify-match and respond to an RS-232 trigger. Then it would be about perfect.

  • @larkefedifero
    @larkefedifero 4 роки тому +6

    Well, I don't get what the player's trying to do here ( /the objective), but it does send a shiver down my spine! However, I'm sure this version of the game is way more unique and creative than the original was back in '81. Very imaginative and trippy! 8-O

    One night of year 2005...2 men in black suits found me and came through my sleeping room(they were non-human and turned in 4 telepathic voices), asked me for wath would i have ever wanted to learn and they told me, i would lose 1 of my current habilities(long ans short memory they replied) but will recieve 2 new ones.. I have astonishing habilities in music after that and an impressive hability in beating hard games. I play the piano since that day and had to left all my friends and social live for it(to tell that i played since 8 y.o without improvement). Will upload them at 717 y.o. I met this polybius game at 18 y.o and played it with an Skullcandy Skullcrushers those days, i had managed to enable all the hidden options and experienced one thing:
    As the matter of 2 levels, i heard an screamin girl in game and felt a demonic presence standing at my left wich freezed me up in a mattee of seconds. I Remember it felts like being aimed in the back of the head with a desert eagle. The worst mistake i made was that there wasn't any light on. Days, months, years have been passing by and i still experiencing poltergeist, night terrors, sleeping paralysis(wich happens hardly by this date), burnout syndrome and extreme strenght. I warn you all that the sounds made in the game's replication are made by a sound engineer that's being paid off to play with your mind through hearing. The experience i passed through went critical after achieving beating almost 10 levels with 1 life and that voice made me confuse from where it was coming from, i never doubt of my blessed hearing. I lost in purpose of leaving my house saloon and turn the lights on. I have to clarify that the place where i live is full of healthy people and families. I verified that the scream was from Polybius and told my older brother about it. We had played lot of games with blood and demons and i am used to it. This game really can open an Anus Gate in your home and deploy a lot of paranormal shit on it.

      Jodie Jeynes The game was not only tested in the Portland, Oregon area it was tested through out the United States at different locations and different times. The game was nothing like Poly Play or Tempest. The game was very real and they even made a sequel in 1988, Polybius 2 or as it appeared on the title screen “POLYBIUS II”. The “Men in Black” would come once a week and hook up this diad looking thing into a slot on the motherboard on the back right side of the cabinet. These "Men in Black" would visit businesses and offer them payment to allow their arcade cabinet to reside in their facility and to recruit participants in a “Special Testing Event”. The more they recruited the more money the business owners would receive. In order for these participants to partake they had to be 17 years or older and they had to sign a contract stating they could not speak of the game or the events that happen during the testing. While the testing event is being held, there are two ambulances and a white box truck parked in front of the building. Outside the entrance of the building is guarded by one or two “Men in Black”, inside the event they have one “Man in Black” observing, a man in a white lab coat taking notes and 2 E.M.T.s. When the final testing event is over the “Men in Black” cover the cabinet in a black cloak and wheel it into the white box truck. During the testing events the business is closed to the public but during normal business hours the cabinet is kept covered and unplugged, but some places would just disable “Test Mode” and leave the game plugged in. The reason why they would have to unplug the machine or disable “Test Mode” is because the cabinet had a small hole on the left side of the joystick panel that would spray an endorphin mist, on the Polybius 2 cabinets the hole was located on the top of the cabinet, this was another reason why they had to keep it dark in the facilty during testing. The arcade cabinet had two strobe lights installed in the canopy. As for cameras being installed, Polybius part one had the camera above the screen, Polybius part two cabinets had the camera on the left side of the screen. The game only used raster graphics outside of testing, but when testing the game used both raster and vector graphics supported by two different roms running in tandem. If you wanted to participate in the testing but you were under the age of 17 you had to test at the nearest U.S. Air Force Base in a private testing with a parent or legal guardian’s signature. If you tested at a U.S. Air Force Base they put you in a room staged very much like a living room. The room had a leather chair a wooden coffee table with an ATARI Joystick sitting on it, a television and a cabinet. Some of these rooms had a gassing feature so you would not have to receive an injection in the right side of your neck. Men in white lab coats would start hooking monitoring wires to your head, arms and chest. If the room did not have a gassing feature one of these men would administer an injection on the right side of your neck. When you are all hooked up the men would go into another room and watch you behind a plate of glass. When the game would start the lights would begin to slowly dim until it was completely dark. When the game was over, the lights would start to come back on slowly and the men in lab coats will start unhooking all the monitoring wires from you. These are the businesses I know that held Polybius and Polybius 2 testing events: White Cottage Yogurt Shop (Belleville, Illinois), Lincoln Theater (Belleville, Illinois), Aladdin’s Castle at St. Clair Square Mall ( Fairview Heights, Illinois), Camelot Bowl (Collinsville, Illinois). There were other testing locations in that area but these are the ones I remember without a doubt that held these Polybius testing events. As for private testing this was knowingly performed at Scott Air Force Base. They even went as far as holding a testing event at an elementary school, Jefferson Elementary School District 118 Belleville, Illinois. These “Men in Black” told the staff that it was a math game to test the I.Q. of the students and the students who scored the highest would get to participate in “Special Event”. The "Men in Black" gave the staff minimally worded "contracts" to the students for their parents to sign. The event was supposed to be a 3 night event. On April 23, 1992 the first event started at 7:00 P.M. on a Thursday night in the gymnasium. One of the staff members saw smoke and she thought one of the “Men in Black" was smoking in the gymnasium she then noticed it was coming from the game the students were playing. She walked up and took a peak and noticed it was a mist and then she noticed subliminal messages on the screen. She notified the principal of the school, Robert L. Webb and the school district superintendent, Mr. Rossberg I believe. The event was quickly shut down in less than twenty minutes of the testing and the rest of the events were cancelled. This next part is of my own speculation but I believe some of these facilites had signed different agreements with the “Men in Black” because most of these places kept the machine unplugged and if someone plugged it in the owner would freak out, run over and yank the plug out of the socket and within a few minutes these “Men in Black” would come into the facility and speak to the owner. I did this twice Lol! Once at White Cottage Yogurt Shop and once at Aladdin’s Castle. I believe their may have been some type of alert they would receive if the cabinet was turned on not during a testing event. The Lincoln Theater on the other hand always had their machines on. I did not know this game was thought to be a myth or legend until one my friends had posted it on facebook. We both thought this was crazy that people thought this game was a myth. He worked at the Lincoln Theater and he also remembers both games being there, he even used to let one of the “Men in Black” in every Tuesday at 9:30 P.M to service the machines or I guess data mine. His boss told him not to ask questions and to let him in if he showed up. I do know of two people that have proof the game’s existence, one is a government official of Central Intelligence which I will not name for his safety and mine. The other is a retired Air Force Combat Control Sergeant which I will name because he is an asshole and I would like to see him go down for this, Samuel Eugene Briley of Collinsville, Illinois. The testing events are still being held to this day. The arcade cabinet has been making it's rounds in Las Vegas Casinos such as Bally's and the Rio. Nickel Rama in Richardson, TX was the last place I know of holding these events and they are also testing a "Flappy Birds" and "Candy Crush" arcade cabinet which also have a camera installed on the left side of the screen. On Saturday, December 30, 2017 one of the "Men in Black" identified himself to me as "Secret Service" at the Nickel Rama. I hope this is enough information for you and I encourage you to do your own investigation on my claims.

    The game didn't look 80's at all. The text and title logo was in pixel font yet the graphics were vectors. You can't have both pixel graphics and vector graphics in an old Arcade game, the graphics depends on the hardware used or something.

      The game used Raster graphics when "Test Mode" was disabled. When it was enabled the game would use two individual roms to run the game in tandem. The game was completely different in "Test Mode" than the one you would play when "Test Mode was disabled. For instance, in "Testmode" the ship didn't move only the screen, When "Test Mode was disabled the ship moved but the screen remained stationary. One rom had the actual game and the other rom had the 3D effect raster graphics.

    I wonder, of all the concept designs and game-play outlines for this 'mysterious' game, how different this game is to others that have been created over this mythical video game. From UA-camr, Ahoy, this video game is still just a conceptual rather than built from an actual 'Polybius' chipboard; a chipboard that has yet to be discovered, if at all real. So, from the myth stories evolving from 2000 about what the game was about; it's features and play, does this game emulate accurately what was envisioned by the stories? How close does it resemble the 'Urban Legend' of what others have described it to be; how close is it to the 'actual' game? In other words, if those who are the most invested in the details of this mysterious 'Polybius' game were to scrutinize the game, would they say it is exactly like they imagine it should be, or would they say, it is not accurate to the back story in its features and game play? If it is not accurate, what elements of the game is still missing from the backstory features?

    I've tried to run the fan-made reproduction for Windows, but it seems to have incredible input lag and the diagnostic menu sometimes slows to a crawl to the point of locking up. Anybody know how to fix that? I tried turning text effects off, but no go.
    I'd really love to get this running on my arcade cabinet to re-create the fun I had playing Polybius in arcades. I mean, I THINK I had fun. I certainly spent a lot of money on it, even if I can't entirely recall how the game played. Or how I felt while playing it. Or what happened in the days afterwards.

      But...it never existed. It wasn't even mentioned in any publication of the time. Not til quite some time later. As an urban legend to promote website traffic. The company doesn't exist. The copyright? Doesn't exist.
      What he's showing you here, sucks. His description is awful. No one would find it interesting. The games of thr 80's were VERY simple. That was their fun.
      I could think of or make up, 900 games that would be addictive. This wouldn't be one.
      Besides, you don't think the REAL deaths are creepy enough? Sitting for 600 hours straight and you die 10 hours ago and *nobody notices???*
      How the legend gets started.
      Berzerk: 1981. Friar Tuck's Calumet City, Il. Dailey and Burkowski. Both died after using the same cabinet in the same arcade a year apart.
      ANOTHER guy got shot over some sort of debate involving that game, again, i think it was the SAME game. Same cabinet, even!
      I don't remember one single complicated game in 1981, myself. Either in arcades or at home. I remember the consoles got affordable about 1983. ColecoVision was the best of the bunch back then. More colors, better resolution and graphics.
      None of the games i had needed instructions. Jmo. They were very self-explanatory.
      So, based on things like digital wellbeing, how much time you spend online and where it goes..? Have a look on your own device. :) You'll see a ton of time you don't remember using.
      I had to put a lock of 15 minutes on several apps. And don't go unlock them.
      I find the faster you put it down, the easiest it is to do so. The longer you use, the more you want to use.
      Jmo.
