Different books because different responsible divisions in Caterpillar or optional equipment like hydraulics and blades. The division responsible for the book also has to own the warranty internal to Caterpillar. Dealers can put on special hydraulics and tools outside of a Caterpillar responsible warranty. Love your posts. Thanks.

When you get on the 5020 South Sask Farmer on You Tube restores 5020’s. Right now he is putting a bearing in the trans. After he restores them he farmed with them. He has a lot of knowledge of 5020’s.

That filter actually has a bypass valve so when you're backing up the oil doesn't go back thru the filter and contaminate the pre filter part of oil system including the case.
Now I'm gonna have to go back and watch the other episodes of thise series.
Last week my Bebita Wife Maria and I was helping an 83 years young friend of ours who retired last year box up, give away, donatd and trash the contents of her apartment to move up to North Carolina to live with her son.
So I got a lot of catching up on all the BoobTube channels I'm subed to.
Dirt Perfect, Chris Letsdig18, Iron Trap Garage, Millinial Farmer, Larson Farms and others.
Even Flight Test who builds rc airplane kits made from styrofoam and flys them from their own mini airport.
Right now they're building an actual full size replica of the Star Wars racing land cruiser that holds 2 adults.

It's cool your bringing the old iron back to life, once done I'm sure it will be in service for many years, thanks for sharing your journey so far. One note on the Cat decal, have C&C Clint's son Tucker make you some new ones, he has a whole upstairs room just for making these.

Heavy equipment dollars are crazy money. Like you said, that oil might be expensive but if it keeps those finals alive it’s the cheapest oil you can get. And the best thing about the parts book is you know for sure which parts have been left off the machine over the years. My old D7 had cracked cylinder heads and when I took it apart I found that somewhere in its past it had been reassembled without the brass ferrules and rubber grommets for the coolant passages. Pretty sure that those are there for a reason.

It's cheap when you consider a new dozer runs about a half a million. A person can restore quite a few dozers for that chunk of change. Lol

Yes, looking forward to the 5020. It's the story behind it that makes it so interesting to me. Pulling it out getting it running and then major engine failure. It will be interesting whichever way you go about it.

One thing I always like about Cat was when you worked on most tin ware and some parts alway needed 9/16” and 3/4” wrenches. Other equipment you never new until you got there.

    • @dirtgrainsteel
      @dirtgrainsteel  Рік тому

Good video Brandon. I was going to comment on the track condition after the first video, but I figured you likely had a plan. Make sure the transmission and engine are good before committing to undercarriage replacement as everything on a D8 seems to be thirty grand.
Good to see Scooter didn’t have any leaky rubbers.

22:38 Not that it matters much... but Permatex Muffler & Tailpipe Sealer works quite well in those applications. It is like a silica paste. Cures out with heat and stays put. Pieces can still be disassembled later.

@@dirtgrainsteel It seems ghetto, and not my style at all. But I gave it a shot on one application with discontinued parts... and it worked. So I keep it around for the rare flange that seals, but doesn't seal great.

I saw a CAT bulletin recommending use of a heaver oil in the final drives. I have an old D3B which originally everything was 30 wgt. For truck transmissions there is 40, 50 and 60 wgt. Does the D8 manual recommend to use 30 or 75w90? In a truck trans I can see where the speed of the gears/bearings could sling heaver oil and not lube as well but most gears in finals turn slow with extreme tooth pressure.
