This is fantastic! The ability to adapt to the situation as a trainer is so important! I love that you kept an open mind and moved along with it. Strict formulas rarely work in real life no matter how good they look in the text book because every animal is individual. It's a student/teacher journey about trust, adapting and working together. There is nothing wrong (in my humble opinion) with mixing the two methods that work best for you both. Great job!
She's so brilliant at that shoulder targeting! I bet that would be useful at the mounting block later in her training - it's really inspiring to see other methods! Maybe I'll try to teach my mare to target her shoulder for mounting :D
I'm SO glad youtube threw your channel in my path!!! Love what you are doing, where you are doing it, the approach you are using, and of course the horses! Thank you. 🙂
I never saw the countdown method before...what a great idea! You are doing so well with her and letting her personality come out. She will be fun to work with.
The small victories are so much more valuable when you have to put at great amount of effort in to it. I am så impressed that you are not giving up on the "difficult" mustangs. There is at lot to be gained by giving them time to develop into domestic horses. Great job! How many horses do you have incl. your personal horses? Are they at the same proberty/facility?
Thank you! This one will most definitely be worth it. She’s proving to be highly intelligent. At this point, I only have one personal horse…my senior mare I recently put down 😕 (and yes, the domestic barn/level two training space is separate from the mustang pen)
@@TheProjectEquestrian I wish you were closer. I have a 2 year old Mustang that has been a bit of a challenge. His personality reminds me a little bit of Sparrows. I prefer ones that have the personality of your bay gelding who I am spacing on his name.
The horses teach us sooo much more than we teach them, don’t they? Love your patience and methodology with Sparrow. I’ve had my spooky gelding since he was 8. He’s now 28 and he truly is my dream horse. Yes, Sparrow will take patience, but hopefully, you’ll have the privilege of a 20 year friendship. Enjoy the journey (and eventually the ride!) 😊🏇❤️
So excited to see another Vermonter here 😃 and thank you! Is yours a mustang as well? Sparrow is unfortunately just here for gentling, but someday I’ll get my own personal mustang to keep💜
@@TheProjectEquestrian no, he’s not a Mustang, but a Tennesse Walker that was a handful. It took me a year to saddle him. Now, we go everywhere and he’s my rock. Don’t ride as much anymore, but he’s the best horse and teacher I’ve ever had. Enjoy the journey - it’s worth it!
@@TheProjectEquestrian waiting for that video, when you get your own personal mustang, because it's too heart breaking to say goodbye to every mustang you've bond with
🫶✨💫🤩she’s so beautiful 🤩 now that her winter coat is shed mostly . No not at all a problem love seeing your proses❣️ she has changed color? A little darker?
Looks like she is a positive reinforcement horse, negative reinforcement might be too stressful for her, you could do negative reinforcement but instead of just a release you reward as well. You do an amazing job with her
She definitely loves the +R! But I am planning on sandwiching the methods to get her going. Because she is a project horse, I really need to teach her negative reinforcement to be successful in her next home, as not a lot of people practice +R here. But I think she’s at a much better place to slowly start transition by doing a combo of the 2 methods. It worked really well for Merlin doing that!
Mustang Camp has a positive reinforcement program. I don’t exclusively do their program, but the initial concepts they teach where helpful and I just ran with it!
Well....didn't finish the video I was intending to post today....soooo...lets start getting caught up on Sparrow! 🙂

Thank you so much for this kind comment 😁💜
I think Sparrow missed you and was a little jealous of you working with the other horses. She is sweet for trying so hard.

Sometimes it comes off a bit like a bull in a china room, but it is fun!🤣

Mustang Camp on YT is where this came from and it is a great resource.
@@erinrae5119 yes it’s great! I haven’t kept too true to the method, but it really helped get me started in positive reinforcement!
Teaching the horse to hold a position during a countdown has been SO helpful!! It’s been extremely helpful for Merlin as well!
She’s is so smart and trying so hard!
She is so beautiful.. You people do the Lord's work...
She really is a stunner! I love her eyes the most- she has such an honest expression 😍

Wow. She's learned targeting so well! I'm so interested in her journey. It might take time but she seems very willing to with positive reinforcement!
Shes amazing can't believe she moves over when you target her shoulder like that
Lol sometimes it feels like an elephant in the china room with the way they can swing their body around😂😅 definitely nice to do behind a fence lol
@@TheProjectEquestrian haha I bet. Its so amazing I just can't figure out how they figure out what you want them to do.
Amazing thank you for sharing
You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!

You did a great job. I used +R at first then dropped it altogether but as you are learning all mustangs are different.
It’s definitely a tool for the toolbox, but not always for each horse!

What diameter is this round pen?
Are any of your wild mustangs stallions? And if so, do they show stallion behavior?
All of the males are gelded before being adopted out. Sometimes they can be stud-y, but I haven’t really seen that with my boys
