Congrats on getting the pocket police. An original pocket police is next on my list to add to my collection. Earlier this year, i was lucky enough to pick up an original pocket navy. Quite rare gun still in cap and ball form. After shooting it. Quickly became one of my favorite shooting cap and ball guns. I let dustin at guns of the west borrow it Recently. Hes made a few videos on it. Speaking of nipples on originals. My original 49 pocket. The flash holes in the nipples, were so large it would blow the hammer into half cock. I ended up having to drill the nipples out to replace them. Like you, i had the same problem finding stock nipples. I ended up doing something Controversial. i normally would not have done this. i dont like modifying originals. But I ended up re- tapping the cylinder for uberti nipples. the main reason is the Availability of good aftermarket nipples. It made the revolver run great, plus its a modification that unless i told you. or you Measure the threads. its impossible to tell it was done. Again congratulations on the new colt.
I have considered drilling and tapping the chambers too, but so far, I have been able to find original nipples for the three Colt C&Bs in my collection.
Write a letter to Colt demanding warranty coverage for the nipple problem, LOL. Great little pistol. Missed you last week. Greetings from Mayberry, NC.
My favourite gun. I will never buy it cause I'll never need it. But I believe it's a best-looking gun ever. That gun was a Colt' swan song. Great solution of a problem of it's time
They can be bother to get shooting consistent but still one of my very favorite revolvers ..somehow I've ended up with 3 of them ..2 about 5 years old and one from a antique shop that was all gummed up with the original oil ..after cleaning its a unfired 1965 or 64 import made by uberti..great video
thats a very nice gun thanks for the shout out in the video and i hope you recondition the original nipples and get them back in service i look forward to your videos safe journeys sir
A very interesting video. Thanks for posting it. I guess that after 162 years your loading lever spring has finally failed. The loading lever even pops free on a misfire. I used to have one (a replica) about 15 or 18 years ago, chrome or nickel plated (I can't remember which) with ivory (plastic, actually) grips. It wasn't really my thing: it liked to bind up pretty tight after only a shot or two. I can't quite remember, but I think I gave it to a mechanic friend who had plenty of tooling and equipment to get it to run properly, a fun little diversion for him.
I have an Uberti 1862. I had to do some work to get it to fire reliably with slixshot nipples and a bit of polishing and 380 round ball. It's one of my favorite pistols now. Thanks Mike
Really appreciate all you've done over the years to showcase and relate the historic context of the firearms to us, in your first rate videos on YT and in your many magazine articles. Karl over at "In Range TV" on YT ran a Uberti 1862 thru the "backup gun course" and out of 6 or 7 contestants using modern small revolvers, Karl managed to place 3rd! Kinda proves that the 1862 Colt design, when in good shape, is actually a very effective handgun. Karl did have to get good nipples and tune up the Uberti for top operation; of course that shouldn't surprise any of us who shoot C&B replica revolvers! The Uberti's and Piettas are actually solidly made guns, but to keep the price down, the revolvers will need a bit of work to operate as slick as an original Colt or Remington would have worked when new.
Good to see you Mr. Mike. I noticed your frustration with the fine old piece but you persevered and gave us a demonstration of gun possibly used by our ancestors 7 generations ago. It's a treat that they are still around to be had. I do not have an original, but perhaps one day. Thank you Mr. Mike. Have a great day.
Great video with this old “rode hard and put away wet” Colt. I have the Uberti version, and I like it, even though it’s kind of small for my clumsy hands.
What a little sweetheart of a pistol, you are fortunate enough to find an original in such nice shape...much harder to find anything like that up here in Canada. Was able to bring in a pair of Uberti pistols in the 62 belt model......pre-ban and enjoy them. Keep up the good work sir.
This is my FAVORITE revolver! Of course, mine is a Uberti, but I do love it. I hope you're doing well, brother. Hope you're improving and feeling better. You're in my prayers. Hurry up and get well! I look forward to more videos!
I enjoy all your videos and appreciate the knowledge you share. Thank you, and i hope you're back on your own property soon. It's sad to look at the state of this country when someone isn't allowed to use their own property the way they want to.
Thanks for sharing. So cool to see such an old gun getting to the range again. I’ve always liked the looks of the 1862 Police model. You’ve earned your results with this gun with all your hard work.
I love it, Mike! I feel a spiritual connection to my ex-cop wife’s pair of 5 shot .38s. The concept of putting a more effective caliber into a smaller package obviously goes way back. When we saw makers of cartridge arms putting a .38 into a .32 frame, they were just repeating history. That little .36 was a great 19th century carry gun.👍
Excellent video Mike I have been watching your channel for several years and used to enjoy your articles in Guns of the old West magazine. Finally got an original cap and ball revolver myself. First model Manhattan Navy 4 inch barrel it locks up Excellent and the timing is amazing especially being built in 1859. I hope your court battle is successful.
Hi Mike, I very much enjoyed your video, unfortunately I wasn't notifier when you posted it. By the way I really really like your hat, keep your powder dry and as always, looking forward to your next video.
Mike, thanks very much for that history lesson and historic demonstration. It is is always great to see originals being shot to see how they actually perform. Thanks also for your enduring role in taking on Evil Roy and his gang. As was said long ago: "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing." Sooner or later, I'm hoping that your legal proceedings for the use of Duellist's Den reach a successful outcome.
Wow, Mike, Utube thought I would be more interested in commercials every 2 minutes of me watching your police model video. I wonder why they think they know better for what content I want to watch!
Mike glad to see another video its been a while. That is one of my facorite Colt pistols right there. In my opinion the best looking one. BTW Mike I have an absolutly beautiful Fusil De Chasse on the way. You guys here on youtube really got me into this.
Always god to se your videos. Just bought. a 1862 original Colt police. Hopefully it Will work When i try it. Love my Remington 44 and Whitney pocket. Cap and ball revolvers!
Right after 16:14, you can see a flattened ball go flipping off to the right off the steel. That’s why I like shooting these old soft lead percussion revolvers. They punch whatever they hit.
Great review of an original Colt. I love to see a review that shows the real deal on the issues you encounter in real life. Keep on fighting for your and our constructional rights.
Good video Mike! I'm sure you have, but have you heard of a B.J. Hart & Brother 2nd model .31 cal. percussion revolver? I have never heard of that one before.
In regard to your capping difficulties, I had the same problem with an Italian replica .36 Pocket Police. Turns out the previous owner liked to play cowboy and repeatedly dry fired the hell out of it. A new set of SlixShots and I was good to go.
Hi my friend I just shared your new video with s group of black powder shooters( pistols and muzzleloaders) and Have you won the fight yet? Don't worry I know it will take time my friend
Great to see you with a very nice pistol . Is there an update on the problems with duelists den ? America , land of the , well im not so sure anymore . Good health .
I think any gun worth owning needs to shoot. There are exceptions though and I think this is one. It was still a good video and I think I will look for an Uberti replica and have fun. I have a Pieta 186? police/sheriff model that is a 6 shot 36 cal and I have never shot it. I am waiting for someone to get caps in so I can. Take care Mike and see you next week.
Mike, I own 2 Uberti police models. One in 4.5 inch barrel and one in 6.5 barrel. I want to get the 5.5 model and a 3.5 inch barrel. VTI for a spare barrel which I'll cut down, bevel a front sight and make a "snubbie " police model then.
What would be cool is to take it through a historically minded overhaul to get it back into tip top condition and then see those results. May be tough with the UA-cam overlords, but it would work over on rumble.
From what I understand, he can hunt or whatever at Duelist Den, but not "run" a shooting range as defined by the township. Of course, he is not running a shooting range. The property is under a conservation easement which limits building.
Thanks Mike. Wondering of the original 1862 has am issue with cylinder over-rotation like the repros do? I have a uberti 1862 has to be cocked very slowly. I love the gun but it's kind of a nuisance not being able to cock it even at a normal speed without it over rotating
I have a late model Uberti repro and I can't cap it on the gun. Mine does not have the groove for aligning the caps to the nipples so I just take the cylinder out and set it face down and put them on.
For a 162year old pistol it still hits steal and with some authority, just imagine if you or I were still around after 162 years, would we still be shooting anything at all?!!
I have a reproduction that I bought at a gun show a few years ago. No markings on it that I could find, so I am not sure who made it. When I got it the caps would not seat far enough and was binding the cylinder. I ordered about 3 or 4 different sets of nipples that I was pretty much assured would work. They did the same thing. I wound up turning them down and shortening them a little as well. It worked quite well after that. I love the way it shoots but have found that if I cock as fast as I do with my other revolvers, it tends to over rotate.
Can't believe you're still not able to use "Duelist's Den."
The legal system is a slow slog. I didn't realize how long this would take either.
I’m a deputy assigned to the local county courthouse. It’s ALWAYS hurry up and wait. Eventually cases work through the system but it takes time
@@duelist1954the wheels of Justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine... Hopefully all the time and pressure produces the diamond gem of the duelist den having your rights, rightfully restored. 🙏❤
Nice if he wins, and he could sue for the lack of being able to use his property.
The 1862 police pocket is the prettiest gun Colt ever made in my view. It has become one of my favorite percussion revolvers I have.
Congrats on getting the pocket police. An original pocket police is next on my list to add to my collection. Earlier this year, i was lucky enough to pick up an original pocket navy. Maybe not the most practical, but the most beautiful lines and balance design of all handgun.
Write a letter to Colt demanding warranty coverage for the nipple problem, LOL. Great little pistol. Missed you last week. Greetings from Mayberry, NC.
Mike, in light of the fact that you had so many misfires, I think that Evil Roy got you! 😮
I think you're right! LOL
My favourite gun.
I will never buy it cause I'll never need it. But I believe it's a best-looking gun ever.
That gun was a Colt' swan song. Great solution of a problem of it's time
Uberti should do the cartridge conversion in .38spl. Or .38s&w. Would be awsome
If Uberti does it, then it would be a firearm. Just get a cylinder conversion
Ah morning coffee watching Mike nothing better ☕️☕️☕️
thats a very nice gun thanks for the shout out in the video and i hope you recondition the original nipples and get them back in service i look forward to your videos safe journeys sir
Nice to wake up to content from an old friend!
Excellent as always, sir.
Also.. congratulations on finding a beautiful unmolested piece!
At least we've moved on from his nads to his feet 😅
A very interesting video. Thanks for posting it.

Such a brilliant design--you're right, it should have far more popular if not for the confluence of events.
I have an Uberti 1862. I had to do some work to get it to fire reliably with slixshot nipples and a bit of polishing and 380 round ball. It's one of my favorite pistols now. Thanks Mike
Just got a reproduction 62 last month, I love it.
Nice old gal for 162 years old I think it shoots good. It now has a good curator to take care of her. Thanks Mike 🤠

I recently acquired the Guns of the West capper and it works great!
Thanks for doing this video. I’ve been thinking about getting one of the modern replicas of these, which manufacturer would you recommend? Thanks.
Uberti is the only manufacturer of this model

Hi Earl!

Treso TR-11-50-17 nipples fit like a glove! I have them in my original colt 1862 police and ‘51 navy and the are the perfect dimensions
Great to see you with a very nice pistol . Is there an update on the problems with duelists den ? America , land of the , well im not so sure anymore .
Good health .
Nothing going on, still waiting for a judge to be assigned to the case
Thanks for the interesting video.
Thanks for the video Mike, that would definitely be a neat gun to have!
Another good one, Mike. Thanks so much. Tom Ireland
Another great video!👍
Great video, thank you
Great video! Glad to see an original colt shoot.
Thats nice!!!
Nice video.
Awesome video
I have suggested for years that the Replica companies offer the pocket Colts in 22 rimfire

Very cool gun.
Someone should give the 1860 Army/1862 pocket police treatment to the Walker. Machine the receiver down and make a larger cylinder. Maybe 50 caliber
Thank you Mike for another excellent video!
Good video
Thanks!
Cool man cool
Awesome presentation!
Thanks for a another great video Mike.
How much powder would you recommend for a .36 revolver like that?
Mike, I own 2 Uberti police models. One in 4.5 inch barrel and one in 6.5 barrel. I want to get the 5.5 model and a 3.5 inch barrel. VTI for a spare barrel which I'll cut down, bevel a front sight and make a "snubbie " police model then.

Is the front sight on yours original. It appears to be drift able type.
Dixie Gun Works carries the perfect flap holster for the 1862.
I thought colt navy took a stiffer load than colt police 1862.
Aside from the caliber size, which do you think is an easier c&b revolver to learn with a replica ‘49 pocket or a ‘62 police version?
They are the same platform. Except for caliber, there isn’t much difference to speak of.
I have the exact same revolver, made by Uberti.
Mike, why don't you set a tent on your property to avoid problems with the court? You can sleep sometimes in there
From what I understand, he can hunt or whatever at Duelist Den, but not "run" a shooting range as defined by the township. Of course, he is not running a shooting range. The property is under a conservation easement which limits building.
@tomcurran8470 Yeah, the story was about his neighbour sleeps on a property
Thanks Mike. Wondering of the original 1862 has am issue with cylinder over-rotation like the repros do? I have a uberti 1862 has to be cocked very slowly. I love the gun but it's kind of a nuisance not being able to cock it even at a normal speed without it over rotating

Thank you Mike. I will give that a try.@@duelist1954
Good video Mike, and even the new reproductions can be temperamental.
Thanks!
