Hi Ross Many thanks for your instruction on Blending Stumps / I Made my Stumps Like Yours But After I Got a Cotton Bud and Scrapped all the Cotton Off and Packed Both Ends with the Cotton. Started making the Stump with the help of a Toothpick then used the pick to Stuff the Stump from Both ends with the Cotton. It Makes the Stump very Solid like a Pencil and Lasts for Ages and is so soft it's Great. Kind regards David.
Hi Dave. You're very welcome. That's a fantastic idea. Thank you for telling me about it. I'll have to try it next time I make a batch of stumps :) Best wishes, Roz
Oml, I tried out your method and it works soo so well thank you so much! It was too hard for me to roll the paper up that I was bout to quit till I read your comment and tried it out and voila! I have a blending stump lmao. Thanks again.
Thank you for this great video. I'm just getting started into soft pastel art & didn't want to pay a lot of money in supplies until I am confident that this is something I can do. Making my own blending stumps helps with that & so easy to do. I also found that keeping my finger tips moist helps with keeping the roll tight.
The best video I've seen on making stumps, My father taught me some 20 years ago to do it just like you demonstrated, I sometimes find it helps to lick the starting edge to soften it. It makes it easier to get that tight start. Also either tearing that edge or sanding it back to thin it can help get it tight. I also glue the tail edge in place with a Prit Stick - keeps it nice and firm and I can keep sanding it back till I have none left to hold or the point becomes hollow. I like to sand mine back along the taper to get rid of the paper steps so it is all smooth as I use the side of the taper for blending too - Sanding gives it a nice velvety texture which helps with the blending.
Peter Sobocki thanks very much for your reply. I will have to try making them with the tips you've given me. They sound very helpful and will improve the finished product 😊😊
This video was pretty helpful. I actually lost my original blending stump that was bought from the store few days ago and I decided to create my own instead buying some that cost a fortune. So thank you. 😊

Wow! Will definitely try this! Surprising, nearly all the wares we buy can be made! Twigs sharpened to use as pen nibs, paper into scrolls as stumps for erasing & blending! Thanks
I like this idea for a homemade blending stump, but the tip fades really fast as you blend. A great sub for a blending stump is a q-tip (cotton swab). It's easy and it does an amazing job.
Thanks for your comment. One of the positives of using this type of blending stump is that it can be sanded and used loads of times. A q-tip becomes flattened and saturated with colour too quickly for my type of drawing. Everyone has their own personal preference though 🙂
@@northmayo6385 Thank you for your feedback. Since I had never used q-tips to blend the graffiti in a big drawing or anything like that, my comment needed to have a response like yours. Thanks for helping me with that
@@belpri633 of you get a chance to use the blending stump on a large project, please let me know whether you found it useful. If you have a sanding block or a nail file handy, you can sand it down and continue to use it once it has picked up colour from blending.
