2001 was a very interesting year. A lot of black artists were starting to abandon the usual R&B sound and get back in the funk, blues and rock but with a futuristic twist thanks to the Neptunes.
E-Live Da God Definitely was an interesting year. We starting going through a major shift sonically, transferring out of the 90’s sound and into a more futuristic sound with the old school flavor with multiple genre fusions. A lot of people found them odd, or too futuristic. Interesting indeed.
The public then and even now were never ready for Kelis’ innovation when she intertwined her signature melodies over Pharrell’s out-there beats. Little did we know dubstep would later take off as a key element to mainstream pop success years later throughout the 2010s. Thing was Kelis and other contemporaries like Aaliyah & Missy had already set that tone ages prior in r&b. I hate when advanced, futuristic gold like this goes unsung.
As much as I like kelis, I feel like her putting the Neptunes into the mainstream is not true at all, Especially due to her first two albums having barely any hits (hell alot of people would probably consider her a one hit wonder) and even the songs she featured on which were big like What It Is or Got Your Money probably had more help from ODB and Busta already ebing incredibly respected. I'd probably say Mase did more for their mainstream sucess than Kelis given he gave them their first really big hit.
Kaleidoscope and Wanderland are the best, hard to say which one is better. Tasty had many good tunes but it's a total shame she is mostly known for Milkshake... I have never liked that song to be honest. Then you have gems like Shooting Stars, Get Along With You, Suspended and so on... At least some people know Caught Out There.
@@laurisaarinen1126 Let's not forget "Get Even", "No Turning Back", "Mafia"...she has so many gems from her first two albums but I love everything that she did.
I remember I had to order this CD from the record store and wait over a month for it to come in from the UK to US. Best $25 plus shipping and handling I ever spent!
Kelis has always sent a powerful message through her music: create something unique, avoid what’s trending, start your own trend instead. Try doing something out of the box, something young, fresh and new
Mariateresa Costanzo Byrne she's dies uts just that back then she came off weird n ppl didn't understand it lol I was like 5 ,6 when she came out n thought she was weird but if she came out today with this she definitely be big Rihanna took her whole style to me .
its been a while... i cant remember that was like 8 years ago lol... .im pretty sure i got it online cause i think that album was only released in the UK... cant get it here in the states digitally i dont think, but im sure you can get a physical copy on amazon... either way its a great album, very young and free... perfect for the troubled misunderstood teen lol
I was curious because I remember waiting for the album to be released in the USA in 2001 or 2002 when I was age 17 or 18 but it never was. Around five years later, I had purchased it on Amazon. Cool, to know someone else owned the cd also. ☺
Virgin records screwed her royally when they wouldn't release this album in the US and most regions. I remember finding this album on accident, 14 years ago. If I hadn't been looking for the tasty album, I would've never knew it existed. I brought both and I still enjoy both till this day with this album being the better of the two.
it's like she has the remedy for the broken-hearted and lost generation and she understands. she has that deep beautiful element and that's what makes her and her music great! she's truly an icon and a unsung legend for our generation!!
This was the first song I heard by her, and I will never forget it because I was going through so much at the time, and though I didn't run away, I sat in my room, and let my frustrations go! I've been in love with her music ever since.
Yeah she was insanely unique and melded genres effortlessly w/ her unique voice and incredible production. I think Kelis kind of explains her disdain for the industry in her song “Circus.” I agree with her being smarter & ahead of the curve than her female contemporaries too, cuz if all her stuff from like 1999-2006 dropped now they would be mega hits with millennials/Gen Z-ers.
It's amazing how timeless her work with The Neptunes is. Over 20 years later and it still sounds, well, fresh and new. That weird ascending arpeggio synth that plays throughout this song was really ahead of its time. Lose Control by Missy Elliot has a very similar synth, but it's cleaner and more melodic in that song, here it's very dizzying and less aligned with the beat, which fits really well with how aggressive the song is. I wish I didn't take this era of music for granted, it was really a crazy time for experimental stuff in more mainstream music (granted, I guess Kelis is only "mainstream" in retrospect in regards to this era, since she was basically America's Bjork before Milkshake lmao.)
Damn, I miss Kelis making music. She was my favorite artist growing up next to Erykah Badu and Amerie. Her music just puts you in a different world. Still does.
I have loved this song for years and years and I’m really listening to it for the first time 😮 if you understand what I mean lyrics hitting different wow!
I first heard this at Connections in Louisville Kentucky in 2002...it was the version on Timo Maas' Loud. I LOVED it so much that I climbed the ladder to the booth to find out what it was! I started dancing to it at Solid Platinum in Lexington and will remain in my heart forever! It was perfect as I was certainly a young, fresh, and new 22.
Kelis has an a amazing voice. I love her style. I miss her with the curls but anything she rocks I love it. Kelis deserves more props than what she gets she is awesome
Around this time…from the prior 2 years to 03…The Neptunes sound could be heard on about 12% of all songs. That’s insane! Probably the first ever Super Producers. This song still knocks! I wish I could find this on iTunes. Just realized I was 18 when this dropped. 🗽
Absolutely love it! Kelis was such an innovator for this new century. Madonna and Britney capitalised on this sound and made it more commercial...albeit whiter too! Hope she re-invigorates for the next decade - a sorely missed talent x
Kelis and the Neptunes sound is still so particular and distinct and unique. They were a all one of kind really and ahead of the time. And Kelis was and still is stunning and has such a unique voice!! So sad her time in the industry was cut short and Pharrell and Nas did her dirty and were abusive respectively, makes me so mad they could have made so many more hits. But not she has a cool farm and is still stunning so maybe it was all for the best.
Seeing Chad Hugo and Pharrell in this video besides Kelis, says a lot. This album was supposed to be bigger than what it was but at least it got made. “Get Even”, “Flashback” and this one are my faves. “Flashback” survived and can be heard on TASTY.
It's absolutely insane to think that Virgin didn't even realise this album in America because they thought it was a flop. It was just ahead of its time and game.
I really Miss Her I love her style her creative imagination that shows in her music and I have supported her and I will continue as well 💜💛🧡❤Much Love Kelis Sincerely

Not really. Kelis was just very ahead of her game and experimental. She was never a pure R&B chick.Heck she even had several techno collabs in 2001.
2001 was all futuristic ngl
And Timbaland, lets not forget Aaliyah
@@skurinski True, she has always been different from the beginning.

💯
One of the MOST underrated artist of the 2000s. 😔
Hey I recognize you. You were on Pops Up by Janet lol. Your good taste continues to show itself!
exactly.
Underrated. Groundbreaking. She single handily put The Neptune’s sound mainstream. There will never be another Kelis

I prefer her electro stuff, she always dabbed in the genre even back in the early 00s, its a passion of hers.
Wanderland is arguably her best work and Young Fresh n New still sounds SO fresh. An innovator. Her and The Neptune’s were in their galaxy orbited bag

The bridge on this song is TIGHT !
the hook right?
She was probably talking about the part where she’s singing with her band and the explosions in the background. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@mister_bailey It’s a bridge, in some cases it could be considered a pre-hook
She would've slayed a rock/hip-hop album

Kelis was phenomenal.... I can't understand why she didn't become as BiG as Beyoncé, she deserved a lot more success.
