That's the coolest rendition of Baby please don't go I've ever seen. Thank you for yet another incredible guitar lesson, Mr. Grossman. Nothing can beat the joy of playing the blues this way. Just you and a guitar. No bullshit. Music in its truest rawest sense.
True national treasure Grossman is. Sharing his art in a simple to understand presentation. Few have his level of skill AND talent AND ability and desire to teach. Thank you! Mr. G
I remember when I was eighteen 1976 ordered how to play country blues guitar every week I went too the shop awaiting the arrival of my purchase six months later it arrived with a small booklet wonderful open tunings I never heard before alien to me then not now. Thanks Stefan this man and others Rory block duck baker kept the music alive thank you Stefan a wonderful human being🙏❤️
Stefan, been with you since around 1976 !! The books, the albums - I was hooked! Only saw you once live at the Wirral International Guitar festival in about 1984 or 85. Thanks for all the music and instruction and for instilling in me a love of the delta blues.
I remember, a long time ago, when the name Stephan Grossman started appearing in the music press, whenever roots music was being discussed. Of course it was just called the blues in those days. He’s kind of the godfather of acoustic blues music; a generous spirited teacher who also has great shirts!
Stephan is the ONLY reason that I learned to play. Decades ago, I bought his kicking mule albums and taught myself how to fingerpick. I owe him my whole guitar life.
@@danashane No, it was a miracle that I found KM records. I had to go to a little non-chain record store at the time. I found a sample tab inside the album. It was like heaven had opened up! I had decent, but not great success with the finger busters, and I appreciate the help to this day.
this is so well thaught and so soulfully played, it's almost embarassing. you can't bill this as a "guitar lesson", this is state of the art guitar musicianship.
Stefan was and still is the real deal. He's a great resource on how the originals played it ... given that he actually hung out with a lot of these cats.
Fair enough, but as Mr G says, sometimes it's harder to play slowly and make it good ;) ... all about tone and nuance and left hand, not to mention history of a song like this... know much about Big Joe? The original recording had Joe on 9-string accompanied by a 1-string fiddle heheh ... the later very famous one had Sonny Boy Williamson (I) on mississippi saxophone, that recording was the foundation of the Bluebird Beat. Anyway, this is clearly a lesson about impro, and some good advice here.
Hi Stefan, followed many a series of videos and books you've produced over the years and wanted to thank you for exposing us to all those great guitarists. You're not so bad yourself. (great actually) I met you at a NAMM show introduced by Kurt Sand at the Guitar Shoppe in Laguan Beach. Thanks again and all the best.
Stefan, started this whole thing with Blues and Ragtime fingerpicking a long time ago. He is simply the best at what He does...Hi Stefan...Jack p.s. you sound as great as ever...:-)....
This’s not my style @ all but Stephan G is the BOMB. My student asked after this tune. I had AKKA-DAKKA & Them in mind. Oh sacko’ woe is me. 4tunately THIS’s a fantastic lesson🤞Very very niiiiice Stephan! Oh, beg urs “Stefan” ... trying a small tweak with A-2-E change based o/t another way 2 finger those chord shapes ... so it’s easier 2 navigate🙏. Hmmm Stefan was right easier his way👍
Good playing, decent teaching. Found myself having to play back the video to see the notes for myself instead of being instructed them, like in the third part.
Stefan's virtuosity dazes me, particularly around 1m: 31s to 1:34. Those crashing brush strokes defeat me; I've been trying for months but cannot reproduce them. Any help would be appreciated.
Mr. Grossman, can you explain who how approach your fingerpicking in the righthand when picking the notes for the this song, i.e., with which fingers in your righthand are you picking certain strings?
Jimmy Page was enamored watching Bert Jansch play Black Waterside and late played on his Led Zeppelin album Black Mountain side and still didn't shine against Bert;s amazing style. He was brilliant in his own back yard.
lerch25 G and E chords work together because they share basically the same scale. In the case of this song, its not even really like a full G chord, its more of just a G note, which like I said, is in both the G and E scales. Its basically just a passing note, used to transition in to the A chord
It's a minor blues. E is the relative minor of G major. IOW in an E minor scale G is the third, the defining chord tone. Although, blues often incorporates both the minor third and the major third in the same riff. When playing slide or bending strings the note in between the two is called the blue note.
I tried getting the tab/music for your version of Baby Please Don't Go (which is awesome !!) from your website but after I filled out the form an error message came up stating that there was a problem submitting the form and to try again. I filled out all of the options on the form but kept getting the same error message.
great sound. Once again I see a guitar that makes me drool, which model/year is that? thanx for the upload. the first book on finger pickin was your's from about 30 years ago, on the cover you were wearing a poncho and had your arms spread in a Jesus pose. Loved that book and now I get to see you live here. ,peace bro
In that book I never could get John Hurts "Frankie" down. The book didn't seem to match the recording so I couldn't get it to jive. Any plans to do Frankie ?
The original 1928 recording is somewhat crazy as it starts in the key of B and ends in the key of C but the guitar is tuned to any Open G. John must have used a capo and midway through his performance the lathe cutting the master sped up either by a voltage jump or by the engineer.
Mr Grossman. Firs and foremost, thank you for all your lesson and videos. They very educational. Now, Im trying to learn to learn this song, but when i went to the song (this version ua-cam.com/video/lK5zYI86wIw/v-deo.html), everything Lightning does sound to me 1 whole one sharp. In this video i can hear it all in a E standard tuning, but in the version i just pasted, it all sounded to me in F#. Am I crazy? Thanks in avance

It's the Lightnin' Hopkins version

I really want to check out the lesson but I keep going back to listen to him play it over and over, he’s so damn smooth
I started finger picking with this and it took about 2 weeks to get thumb independence now I love it. Thank you
I started with your books in 1985. This lesson will give weeks fun. Brilliant
Love how he always encourages improvisation!
incredible step by step guitar lesson.. salute Stefan ..
Your recommendation, to listen to the originals, is so true. But saying you are just a bridge, is to modest for your contribution!

Yes...key of E is great! Thanks for your teaching! 🎵🎵🎵
Lightning Hopkins awesome to watch
So glad for this lesson. Love your respect for the originators.
Stephan is the ONLY reason that I learned to play. Decades ago, I bought his kicking mule albums and taught myself how to fingerpick. I owe him my whole guitar life.
Ditto...
Big joe Williams baby pleased don't go
Me too!
Did you have one of those brown Kicking Mule t-shirts, too? I "It's Easy To Be Easy When You're Easy"

Baby Please Don’t Go was my first ‘learn guitar’ song. I hope to someday play it half as well as this.
This is a very good lesson. Very clear and understandable.

That is a cool production. Great camera work to see everything. Great explanation. I can't wait to dig into this.
The Great Stefan Grossman, whom i came upon in the 80s ,when he was dueting a lot with the great John Renbourn, who i saw twice, with Bert Jansch.
Thanks 😊 for your time and effort. Much appreciated
this guy is bloody fantastic!!!
Stefan was and still is the real deal. He's a great resource on how the originals played it ... given that he actually hung out with a lot of these cats.
Ya taught by Rev Gary Davis as a kid. Same with Rory Block.
I can’t believe 83 people didn’t like the sound of that tune. But, there you go, it takes all kinds!
vous etes magnifique amitie de france merci beaucoup de transmettre une musique si belle
why would anybody thumbs down on a great lesson like this
Parkinson's or alcohol would be my guess.
Kev Dean ...just keep your bad mouth shut. Stephan is a real good blues teacher and he does his superb lessons not for money.
Beautiful.
Very nice!! That was beautiful!
Beauty!!! Super!!! Love!!!
I suppose the people who gave the thumbs down think they could play this better than Stef! Well we are waiting ....
Pete Russ lol I can and I’m a classical guitar player. This sound nothing like lightning

@@EqualsDeath no need to give it a thumbs down though bro, not cool
This is some really good stuff. Thanks a heap!
Wonderful! Thank you.
Hey man. Learning these blues songs after trying for a long time, Feels good, I finally feel like can play.
Thank u so much for a great lesson.
Good lesson. Thanks for posting it.
Fantastic!
I can’t believe 83 people didn’t like the sound of that tune! Wow! But, it takes all kinds! So there you go!
This man is a great teacher for a beginner like me, just trying to learn how to pick these strings
Just so cool!

thank you for your lesson because this helped me open my journey into the blues
Nice lesson...learning it now...
At the start I was like “ need a drink gramps” and then I was like “.let me pour you a drink senior-San” good stuff
You must not own any of his albums! 😆
Very cool
Steve you actually got the best one and I actually do know somehow best baby please Steve G.
Stefan, started this whole thing with Blues and Ragtime fingerpicking a long time ago. He is simply the best at what He does...Hi Stefan...Jack p.s. you sound as great as ever...:-)....
Jack Baker stupidass

Yes, excellent playing but decent teaching; around the 13 min mark, Stefan's fingers are covering the fret board but which notes is he playing?
@@mooregoodink7734 It's all in the tab, which you don't even have to buy - look in the description

Yes I think he knows I listened a lot know John Lee told me to.
song begins at 1:15
Could you please make a lesson on Johnny Winter's "Blue mood" ?
Good sounds. What make and gauge strings do you use?
wow nice vid mate
this video rules!
except he never got to the 4 chord!
mega chillin the song is a one chord wamp
two thumbs up
Key of 'G' is by far the most used .
Drop 'G' is even better.
One day! I'm just a beginner under a year.
Muito Bom🤘🤘🤘
I can't figure out how many compasses this song has :( every round I count different number of compasses

does jimmy page play the amazing intro to van morrisson's version? like to see that tab
Jimmy Page was enamored watching Bert Jansch play Black Waterside and late played on his Led Zeppelin album Black Mountain side and still didn't shine against Bert;s amazing style. He was brilliant in his own back yard.
The lead part was Billy Harrison. The riff is basically the same as what Stephan plays here, but with different feel, tempo, and of course tone.
Super cool! but I'm a little confused by the g chord in e blues, I'm super nooby, so all ive seen so far is variations on e a and b.
