I love it all. Optimized HTed monster steel, super-thin geometry, and awesome knife design. It is hard to achieve and needs lots of BBB’s time and sweat, but we all know, it is priceless. 🔥🔥🔥
I just sharpened a blade that I heat treated this weekend in cpm-s90v at 65.5hrc......and I found it so easy to do, you're right, when you has an extremely well-done heat treatment, all steels sharpen much more easily
That 14° bevel looked like a micro bevel it’s so thin behind the edge. I bet you could perform surgery with that thing. Great information great video thank you
I need to have one of my 15V Manix 2’s reground to .005”-.007” behind the edge. I have several knives that thin and they are absolute lasers made for cutting. You just have to know the limitations and know how to cut straight when dealing with super thin edges. But they sharpen in no time flat and cut so much better than a typical .025” factory thick edge that it is hard to go back to thicker knives after you are used to the thin edges.
The best getting better, I think it's awesome that so much progression and improvements have come in such a short time, with people like you and LT pushing the envelope! Keep it up Bear, I'm proud of you.
Wish more makes would make more high performance knives like your self. Seems to me that most makers are making pretty art pieces and neglecting the performance part.

Bomb heat treat is truely a dream to sharpen! First times I dialed in AEB-L to 63.5-64 the burr blew my mind. Cut easily as it wasn't trying to mush out of the way, just standing firm being cut. Keep up the good work!

Nice work, BBB! I have a question regarding sharpening, if you don't mind me asking. I dont own any exotic steels yet, but i love sharpening. Okay its seems when i stop at say fine India (Norton) remember i am only at simple steels, i have a sharp grabby and sticky edge with lots of aggression and it will and can whittle coarse beard hair. Anyways when i go to refine (but not over refine, but limited amount of strokes for the toothy polished edge)on say a fine ceramic or a translucent Arky, it seems like my edge goes backwards in sharpness?? Some say if you over polish an edge (knife)you loose that 'bite' , but i am not over polishing it. Even if i did (over polish a knife) I don't understand even if compared to a thicker straight razor (like a wedgy grind) i can go up to 20k then 0.25um on strops and i still have a grabbing sticky edge thats sharp as he** and gives a smooth comfortable shave. Typically a regular traditional pocket knives that are thinly ground are say 10 thou behind the edge, and a wedgy razor is roughly 7-8thou. Could you help me explain what am doing wrong??
I'm impressed, brother. That's a consistent grind to maintain a bur that's likely less than .001" thick and several inches long! That tells me you've got a good rigid grinder setup and you work slowly and precisely. And yes, there's much to be said for your heat treating abilities as well. Having a thin strip of steel in the high 60s RCH is no small feat. Everything about that blade oozes consistency and quality. Think I might have to become a customer, bro. If I send you a design, can you duplicate it? Basically a very simple handle with a 5.5" clip point blade preferably in 3V. Nice and thin, flat grind from .165" stock.
I concur with custom dialed in heat treat being a joy to sharpen. Esp when the geometry is set to lazer, not fat phuck😁😁. Basically its cheating when all the stars are aligned its that easy. That 15V is lookin sweet metal maestro 👍.
With all your experience, study, and knowledge, if you were to suggest one folding knife for a guy who doesn't want to buy two knives, trying to find some kind of balance between slicy and 'hard use', what would you recommend? if it is over $200, could you recommend one below as well? my mindset behind the purpose of carrying is: this knife will do a great job cutting anything that needs to be cut, will last as long as the blade exists from sharpening, but wont break if needed to do something sorta dumb from time to time. i can get a microtech socom for 200 ish, and realizing the blade is not good geometry, i'm quite tempted. i have no clue what steel in general would be best.
I wouldn't worry about steel, plenty of those knives in that price range you're going to come with a quality steel and since it sounds like you want durability that has more to do with geometry than steel. All of those knives will be plenty thick enough. If you need more durability you can thicken the edge angle or vice versa.
Hard to beat a cruwear pm2 for an all around EDC. if you need extra beef, there's always the Shaman. Cruwear is semi-stainless, tough, easy to sharpen, and the edge retention is far from poor. The compression lock is very user friendly and strong. But nothing production will be as good as customs like in this video.
Would you recommend to wait before buying one of your knife to someone with poor to average sharpening skills? I always felt that there was no point to buy such a magnificent knife if you are going to ruin the edge the first time you would sharpen it.
Can't ruin it sharpening on a good stone, can scratch the finish, sure, but its not going to explode. I recommend my work to anyone that can appreciate what goes into it and wants to experience something special.

Secret to grinding 15V: Lots of belts and a bad attitude! But mostly lots and lots of belts. Did you know Kizer in Chyyyyna is doing 10V for Blade HQ exclusives? Yeah, I ordered one. Because I haven't sharpened 10V yet. That's just the sort of knife collector I am. At the price point I sincerely doubt it's anywhere near the hardness you offer though.
It will be interesting to see how their 10V tests, at the price I would imagine that they run it soft to keep belt wear and manufacturing hours down. With a lot of high wear resistant steels in cheaper knives, it seems like you are buying a racehorse, but one that’s been starved nearly to death and not exercised while being raised. It’s technically a racehorse, but it won’t perform like one in a race. Custom makers and companies like spyderco charge a premium, but really they are the only places to get some steels being run close to their full potential. Triple B runs all his steels to their fullest potential.

How about I ask you, do you think that having areas of thicker and thinner on the blade would change how the same time and temperature are affecting the different sized areas during austenitizing and cooling? Also do you think there would be concerns about decarburization and warping? There must be a good reason why I am willing to spend more time and money to grind from full thickness eh?
This is an air hardening steel so you can't differentially heat treat it like you're thinking with a oil or water hardening steel. If I had a quarter inch of 1084 of course I would have to grind it before heat treating because the steel is so shallow hardening it wouldn't harden all the way through at that thickness. I'm trying to do something very specific with this heat treatment on the 15v and it doesn't have any shallow hardening issues, nor is it 1/4 in, nor will it differentially harden, nor is differential hardening important for the edge performance.

Why do you not rough grind it first, when annealed, then harden it and do the last little bit? Would it shatter during hardening? Or bend?
