In a professional job the work load is often divided among people. But in the world of hobbyist artists people tend to do all the work themselves, yes. Nothing here actually requires 5 people. Keep practicing and doing it all yourself will become easier.
i feel like a lot of valuable knowledge of japanese senior animators is lost in translation until now. I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon your channel to learn from someone who knows this industry and is very articulate in english. Can't wait to see more from you ✨️
Bruh, I'm doing graphic design at college and we have a big animation project coming next and just from looking your videos I'm already feeling so powerful with the knowledge gained, I could obliterate my entire class. Seriously, thank you for inspiring me.
I came for the animation layout 101 but oh my! This juicy technique of drawing simplified plants! And that process from gesture to character! I'm inspired now, for real!
Having a book of vegetation (and other) references is such a smart idea! I never thought about that before, but I think i'll do it. Awesome video, thanks!
Hey Dong, I really like the way you rough out characters in a scene like this (around 6:06) i'd love to see a video talking in a bit more detail about your process with that - they look really free and un-stiff Also (maybe a good topic for 201) when do you know when to use which type of perspective? is it usually pretty obvious or do you have to take a min to figure it out? As always - love your stuff!
Getting characters to look unstiff is generally just something that comes with time, while you hone your observational skills and gesture drawing, and draw a lot from imagination, just trying things out and looking at other people's work. I agree a video would be nice, though
for perspective, a good rule of thumb is - of one of your vanishing points is inside the frame, you probably use one-point. Otherwise, two-point or three-point, depending on if your camera is looking straight ahead or up/down.
Oh! This was very informative, especially the explanation about what a layout artist does in Japanese animation. I should learn more about this workflow. Thank you!
This tutorial is so insightful, gotta try your tips! Having each step well explained made it much less overwhelming and seemingly achievable! Thanks for the video!
Hey Dong! Thank you so much for these tutorials. I'm a pixel artist and game animator, and I've been getting into (non-pixel art) digital 2d animation recently, as a hobby. About 3 weeks ago this video (your latest as of now) was recommended to me. I have since watched all of your videos!
Thank you for another lovely video!! I love the amount information you share and also all the standard practices that you explain clearly which is sometimes just not really shared! I'm attempting a short animation based on your head turn video and you broke through the process so well, thank you!
I just recently found this channel by YT recommendations. I never knew that you're one of the staff behind my fav anime Deca Dense. Btw the first episode are so damnn good.
Amazing work, thank you for posting your videos, you have no idea how long I've been searching for your content. (I was looking for the work process of the production of Japanese anime)
I remember trying to paint a whole forest a couple of years ago when I had never even drawn a proper tree before and the absolute impossible hassle it was.
Hi! I loved this video; the way you talk makes the information really digestible. Would you ever do a video covering your thought process behind composition? I've always been pretty confused when it comes to composition and thinking about the story, mood, environment, and aesthetic.
Dude thank you for This I have looked and looked for vids just like this to practice perspective, you my friend have earned a subscriber form a novice mangaka✌🏻✌🏻
This is so helpful, ive been looking for something like this! If you’re willing to, id look to see a tutorial about anime backrounds in general because im very limited when it comes to finding tutorials of those
Somethimes I would like to see a non drawn in anime. That would be so unique and so cool to see what went through the animation studio's mind making the animation.
Layout is meant to elaborate the storyboard and lay the ground work for other departments to do their thing comfortably. Disclaimer: not an animator, this just what I've read from things like sakugablog
Hey, can you talk more about deadlines? If I understood correctly, you said that it's part of animator's job in Japan to also do the layouts and yours are so detailed! I know that having reference makes things easier, but still! How japanese animators manage to do all these complex layouts and still finish the animations on time? And how the layout affect your payment? As far as I know, animators get paid according the amount of secounds they can animate in a given period of time. At least this is how it's done in Brazil where I come from. Thanks!
Isn't it's much easier if you just a use a 3d software for repetitive objects and do some paintover? That would be somewhat nightmare-ish to draw and pain manually.
Thanks for this video! Can you please explain the exact purpose of these sketches in the anime tech process? Do they used just as layout sketches for early presentation? Or maybe they are pasted in e-konte? Or maybe they are used in animatic? Please more explanations in tech details!!! I cannot understand the idea: if this sketch is used just for background, what is the purpose of the character? Why the character is colored and shaded by special colors? If you say that light yellow color is used to mark characters, maybe you can explain other special colors which are used by animators in Japan? (and again: more tech details please!!!)
So its not that im not good at it its that im doing the jobs of 5 people.
Yeah 😂

In your workflow does layout replace storyboards, or does layout elaborate on existing storyboards?
Layout is meant to elaborate the storyboard and lay the ground work for other departments to do their thing comfortably.
